Convergence of the emerging IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) includes unlicensed, nondedicated and nondeterministic, hence uncontrollable, computer access networks for IP multimedia services. It enables provision of resource demanding real-time services and multimedia communication raising new end-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS) challenges, for which quality adaptation using resource management is proposed as a solution in this paper. This is an integrated solution taking both IMS and computer access networks into account as well as the two end-devices and the application servers (AS) involved in communication. The best user experience is targeted under real-time variation of available network (e.g. bandwidth, buffer space) and end-device (e.g. battery, CPU, memory, storage) resources throughout a session. The multimedia content is dynamically adapted to fit the resource availability variations, achieving maximum system (i.e. network and end-devices) resource utilization and enhanced QoS. The resource availability update signalling is carried over Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) during the session. This is work in progress. © 2007 IEEE.

Fundamental tradeoffs in distributed algorithms for rate adaptive multimedia streams

Rate adaptive multimedia streams are streaming media connections where the encoding rate is adjusted dynamically (with corresponding changes in media content resolution) in response to changing levels of congestion along the connection. The field of optimization based congestion control has yielded sophisticated distributed algorithms for resource allocation among competing elastic streams. In this work we study the fundamental tradeoffs for a class of optimization based distributed algorithms for rate adaptive streams, building on our earlier work. We focus on three tradeoffs: i) the tradeoff between maximizing client average quality of service (QoS) and client fairness, ii) the tradeoff between granularity of control (both temporal and spatial) and QoS, and iii) the tradeoff between maximizing the received volume and minimizing the fluctuations in received rate. These tradeoffs are illustrated through extensive simulation results using ns-2.

Several types of content Distribution Networks are being deployed over the Internet today, based on different architectures to meet their requirements (e.g., scalability, efficiency and resiliency). Peer-to-peer (P2P) based content Distribution Networks are promising approaches that have several advantages. Structured P2P networks, for instance, take a proactive approach and provide efficient routing mechanisms. Nevertheless, their maintenance can increase considerably in highly dynamic P2P environments. In order to address this issue, a two-tier architecture called Omicron that combines a structured overlay network with a clustering mechanism is suggested in a hybrid scheme. In this paper, we examine several sampling algorithms utilized in the aforementioned hybrid network that collect local information in order to apply a selective join procedure. Additionally, we apply the sampling algorithms on Chord in order to evaluate sampling as a general information gathering mechanism. The algorithms are based mostly on random walks inside the overlay networks. The aim of the selective join procedure is to provide a well balanced and stable overlay infrastructure that can easily overcome the unreliable behavior of the autonomous peers that constitute the network. The sampling algorithms are evaluated using simulation experiments as well as probabilistic analysis where several properties related to the graph structure are revealed.

Providing multimedia service is particularly challenging in wireless networks such as high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) system for the fading properties of its radio links. In this paper, a generalized scheduling algorithm is presented, which allows controlling over user fairness as well as balancing fairness-throughput trade-off. Furthermore, we show that the generalized algorithm can well support minimum data rate for services requiring minimum rate guarantee, which is important in providing QoS for multimedia services over HSDPA. System level simulations are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the algorithm achieves what have been expected in various environments. © 2007 IEEE.

In any large scale distribution architecture, considerable thought needs to be given to resource management, particularly in the case of high quality TV on-demand. This work presents a globally accessible network storage architecture operating over a shared infrastructure, termed Video content Distribution Network (VCDN). The goal of which is to store all TV content broadcast over a period of time within the network and make it available to clients in an on-demand fashion. This paper evaluates a number of content placement approaches in terms of their ability to efficiently manage system resources. Due to the dynamic viewing patterns associated with TV viewing, the effectiveness of content placement is expected to chan(ye over time, therefore so too should the content placement. The placement of content within such a system is the single most influential factor in resource usage. Intuitively, the further content is placed from a requesting client, the higher the total bandwidth requirements are. Likewise, the more replicas of an object that are distributed throughout the network, the higher the storage costs will be. Ideally, the placement algorithm should consider both these resources when making placement decisions. Another desirable property of the placement algorithm, is that it should be able to converge on a placement solution quickly. A number of placement algorithms are examined, each with different properties, such as minimizing delivery path. There are a large number of variables in such a system, which are examined and their impact on the algorithms performance is shown.

In this paper we present an integrated framework for personalized access to interactive entertainment content, using characteristics from the emerging MPEG-21 standard. Our research efforts focus on multimedia content presented within the framework set by today's movie content broadcasting over a variety of networks and terminals. This work contributes to the bridging of the gap between the content and the user, providing end-users with a wide range of real-time interactive services, ranging from plain personalized statistics and optional enhanced in-play visual enhancements to a fully user- and contentadaptive platform. The proposed approach implements and extends a well-known collaborative filtering approach;it applies a hierarchical clustering algorithm on the data towards the scope of group modelling implementation. It illustrates also the benefits from the MPEG-21 components utilization in the process and analyzes the importance of the Digital Item concept. Finally, a use case scenario is presented to illustrate the entire procedure. The core of this work is the novel group modelling approach, on top of the hybrid collaborative filtering algorithm, employing principles of taxonomic knowledge representation and hierarchical clustering theory. The outcome of this framework design is that end-users enhance their personalized viewing experience.

With the enrichment of digital content over the Internet, more and more people are using software for content sharing especially for multimedia content sharing, and most of these softwares are on the basis of P2P architecture which makes good use of high scalability and high efficiency. However, most P2P file sharing systems do not have security mechanism to protect intellectual property of authors and issuers. Moreover, it is difficult to control each peer's behavior due to its self-control principle and light-weight server. So we propose a new system based on P2P architecture for file sharing, to which we apply new DRM(Digital Right Management) mechanisms. Results have shown that our system outperforms other systems in features of security, server load and scalability.

Today's medical institutions produce enormous amounts of data on patients, including multimedia data, which is increasingly produced in digital form. These data in their clinical context contain much information and experience that is currently not being used up to its full potential. Through the digital form the data has become accessible for automatic analysis and treatment for a variety of applications. At the same time, the variety of images produced can be confusing even for trained specialists causing an information overload exists for many medical doctors. This suggests that content-based image retrieval can be a valuable tool for helping manage these data and access the right information at the right time. This article gives a short state of the art of content-based medical image retrieval followed by a description of the medGIFT project on image retrieval with its main components. Then, several challenges are used to illustrate areas where much more work is currently needed to advance biomedical image retrieval. This shows that we have now progresses beyond the phase, where medical doctors transfer a database to computer scientists to only evaluate their algorithms. We conclude that visual information retrieval can have a real impact in the medical field if the techniques can adapt to this rapidly changing field and get integrated into the workflow in radiology and other medical fields. ©2007 IEEE.

As memory speeds and bus capacitances continue to rise, external memory bus power will make up an increasing portion of the total system power budget for system-on-a-chip embedded systems. Both hardware and software approaches can be explored to balance the power/performance tradeoff associated with the external memory. In this paper we present a hardware-based, programmable external memory page remapping mechanism which can significantly improve performance and decrease the power budget due to external memory bus accesses. Our approach was developed by studying common data access patterns present in embedded multimedia applications. In the paper, we evaluate a mechanism that can perform page remapping of external memory. We also develop an efficient algorithm to map application data and instruction memory into external memory pages. We employ graph-coloring techniques to guide the page mapping procedure. The objective is to avoid page misses by remapping conflicting pages to different memory banks (i.e., by assigning them different colors). Our algorithm can significantly reduce the memory page miss rate by 70-80% on average. For a 4-bank SDRAM memory system, we reduced external memory access time by 12.6%. The proposed algorithm can reduce power consumption in majority of the benchmarks, averaged by 13.2% of power reduction. Combining the effects of both power and delay, our algorithm can benefit significantly to the total energy cost.

The development of appropriate tools and solutions to support effective access to video content is one of the main challenges for video digital libraries. Different techniques for manual and automatic annotation and retrieval have been proposed in recent years. It is a common practice to use linguistic ontologies for video annotation and retrieval: video elements are classified by establishing relationships between video contents and linguistic terms that identify domain concepts at different abstraction levels. However, although linguistic terms are appropriate to distinguish event and object categories, they are inadequate when they must describe specific or complex patterns of events or video entities. Instead, in these cases, pattern specifications can be better expressed using visual prototypes, either images or video clips, that capture the essence of the event or entity. High level concepts, expressed trough linguistic terms, and patterns specification, represented by visual prototypes, can be both organized into new extended ontologies where images or video clips are added to the ontologies as specification of linguistic terms. This paper presents algorithms and techniques that employ enriched ontologies for video annotation and retrieval, and discusses a solution for their implementation for the soccer video domain. An unsupervised clustering method is proposed in order to create multimedia enriched ontologies by defining visual prototypes that represent specific patterns of highlights and adding them as visual concepts to the ontology. An algorithm that uses multimedia enriched ontologies to perform automatic soccer video annotation is proposed and results for typical highlights are presented. Annotation is performed associating occurrences of events, or entities, to higher level concepts by checking their similarity to visual concepts that are hierarchically linked to higher level semantics, using a dynamic programming approach.
