The archival community has developed content and data structure standards to facilitate access to the diverse and unique sets of archival records, personal papers, and manuscript collections that are held by archival repositories and special collections libraries. However, these standards are difficult for archivists to use and are often implemented in ways that negatively affect materials-handling workflows, depriving archival users of the best possible access to the totality of materials available within an individual repository. The authors propose that archival descriptive problems can be addressed by implementing a web/database application that is tailored specifically to archival needs and can be implemented with little technical knowledge. This paper describes the system architecture of one such tool, the Archon software package, which was developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Archon automates many technical tasks, such as producing a searchable website, an EAD instance or a MARC record. Although the system utilizes sophisticated algorithms and optimizations, it is easily extensible because most development takes place in an easy-to-use, object-oriented environment.

The advent of media-sharing sites like Flickr and YouTube has drastically increased the volume of community-contributed multimedia resources available on the web. These collections have a previously unimagined depth and breadth, and have generated new opportunities - and new challenges - to multimedia research. How do we analyze, understand and extract patterns from these new collections? How can we use these unstructured, unrestricted community contributions of media (and annotation) to generate "knowledge". As a test case, we study Flickr - a popular photo sharing website. Flickr supports photo, time and location metadata, as well as a light-weight annotation model. We extract information from this dataset using two different approaches. First, we employ a location-driven approach to generate aggregate knowledge in the form of "representative tags" for arbitrary areas in the world. Second, we use a tag-driven approach to automatically extract place and event semantics for Flickr tags, based on each tag's metadata patterns. With the patterns we extract from tags and metadata, vision algorithms can be employed with greater precision. In particular, we demonstrate a location-tag-vision-based approach to retrieving images of geography-related landmarks and features from the Flickr dataset. The results suggest that community-contributed media and annotation can enhance and improve our access to multimedia resources - and our understanding of the world. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Educating the Global Citizen is the goal of many well-intentioned faculty in Engineering. How to merge that lofty goal into an often already packed course can be a challenge. As the need for exposure to "real world" issues becomes more urgent, instructors must find creative ways to make the connections between the theoretical and technical training that occurs in the classroom and issues and events occurring outside the classroom. The use of course management systems could facilitate the process of educating the engineer of the future by providing multiple avenues for exploration. We, an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering and a Course Developer from the Distributed Education and multimedia Department at our institution, worked closely to implement web-based tools and integrate aspects of social responsibility into an introductory course in Air Quality. For a year, we worked together to transform notes and resources into digital format and tested a number of tools within the available course management system (WebCT) at our institution. The conversion of class notes to digital PowerPoint (PPT) format was undertaken to support a deliberate process-oriented pedagogy that required or strongly encouraged in-class note-taking (a mode of cognition or content interaction)1. Students only had pre-class access to partial/incomplete notes. The PPT design of in-class lecture notes was intended to support the flow of lecture content, facilitated insertion of problem-solving sequenced so students could immediately apply their knowledge, and allowed the instructor to interact with students more freely. Complete notes were unavailable for download or print - only for online review after class or before exams, thereby diminishing a typical faculty fear of posting course materials and losing class engagement. Fleeting availability of complete notes was used to promote student review in a more regular (weekly) fashion. In-class access to the web added content interaction

Walsh codes are perfectly orthogonal binary (antipodal) block codes that found their use in many popular applications over several decades including synchronous multiuser communications. It is well known in the literature that they perform poorly for the case of asynchronous multiuser communications. Therefore, the near-orthogonal and nonlinear phase Gold codes with better performance are the preferred user codes in asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communications standards. In this paper, we relaxed linear phase requirements and new sets of Walsh-like nonlinear phase binary orthogonal user codes (transforms) are obtained for asynchronous and synchronous spread spectrum multiuser communications. It is shown that the proposed binary user code family outperforms the Walsh codes significantly and they match in performance with the popular, nearly orthogonal Gold codes closely for asynchronous multiuser communications in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. It is also shown that all. of the binary code families considered in this paper performed comparable for Rayleigh flat-fading channels. We present in this paper that there are a good number of such desirable code sets available in the binary sample space with different transform sizes. These new binary sets with good performance and flexible code lengths might help us to improve the spread spectrum multiplexing capabilities of future wireline and wireless CDMA communications systems.

The design of efficient packet scheduling algorithms is crucial to the radio resource management (RRM) in the satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (SDMB) system, which has emerged as a promising solution to the multimediacontent delivery. In order to achieve more efficient quality of service (QoS) provisioning among different multimedia services, a novel packet scheduling algorithm, namely combined delay and rate differentiation (CDRD) packet scheduling, is proposed in this paper. This algorithm takes into account key QoS parameters aiming at fairly prioritising and scheduling heterogeneous multimediacontents in satellite environment. Its performance has been evaluated via simulations. The results show that, in comparison with existing scheduling algorithms, CDRD achieves better performance on delay, jitter and channel utilisation.

Digital Libraries (DLs) in eHealth are composed of electronic artefacts that are generated and owned by different healthcare providers. A major characteristic of eHealth DLs is that information is under the control of the organisation where data has been produced. The electronic health record (EHR) of patients therefore consists of a set of distributed artefacts and cannot be materialised for organisational reasons. Rather, the EHR is a virtual entity. The virtual integration of an EHR is done by encompassing services provided by specialised application systems into processes. This paper reports, from an application point of view, on national and European attempts to standardise electronic health EHR. From a technical perspective, the paper addresses how services can be made available in a distributed way, how distributed P2P infrastructures for the management of EHRs can be evaluated, and how novel content-based access can be provided for multimedia EHRs.

multimediacontent re purposing is a challenging task that aims to adapt and deliver media content to client devices by considering the heterogeneity pertaining to users, terminals, and communication channels such that it appears homogeneous, seamless and ubiquitous in the context of multimediaaccess and delivery. This ubiquity of multimediaaccess and delivery, among several others, constitutes the requirements of an ambient intelligent environment where people interact with intelligent computing devices through adaptive and intuitive interfaces in a natural and context-sensitive manner. This paper addresses several issues of multimediacontent repurposing in the ambient intelligent environments and presents a prototype system including its design and architecture.
