Useful diagnosis of lung lesions in computed tomography (CT) depends on many factors including the ability of radiologists to detect and correctly interpret the lesions. Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems can be used to increase the accuracy of radiologists in this task. CAD systems are, however, trained against ground truth and the mechanisms employed by the CAD algorithms may be distinctly different from the visual perception and analysis tasks of the radiologist. In this paper, we present a framework for finding the mappings between human descriptions and characteristics and computed image features. The data in our study were generated from 29 thoracic CT scans collected by the Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC). Every case was annotated by up to 4 radiologists by marking the contour of nodules and assigning nine semantic terms to each identified nodule;fifty-nine image features were extracted from each segmented nodule. Correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression were applied to find correlations among semantic characteristics and image features and to generate prediction models for each characteristic based on image features. From our preliminary experimental results, we found high correlations between different semantic terms (margin, texture), and promising mappings from image features to certain semantic terms (texture, lobulation, spiculation, malignancy). While the framework is presented with respect to the interpretation of pulmonary nodules in CT images, it can be easily extended to find mappings for other modalities in other anatomical structures and for other image features.

User feedback is widely deployed in recent multimedia research to refine retrieval performance. However, most of the existing online learning algorithms handle interactions of a single user, which may pose restrained performance due to the limited size of positive feedback. An alternative solution is to learn general user perceptions via collecting feedback from different users. The training process is initiated only when the number of feedbacks reaches a certain threshold. This could improve the performance but it becomes a manual process to decide the threshold and initiate the training process. To address this challenge, ire propose an advanced training method by adopting the association rule mining technique, which can effectively evaluate accumulated feedback and automatically invoke the training process. Training is performed per video rather than for all videos in the database, making the process more efficient and robust. In addition, it can further improve semantic modeling in the video database and continuously improve retrieval performance in the long run. As an example, the proposed method is applied to a mobile-based soccer video retrieval system and the experimental results are analyzed.

For most portable media player (PMP), the demands for large storage space and longer working time usually can not be satisfied at the same time. In this paper, a low power wireless LAN based PMP called WiPMP is proposed. WiPMP is basically a diskless PMP. Instead, it can retrieve a large number of multimedia data from a remote storage device wirelessly. A prototype of WiPMP has been realized on an Intel Xscale embedded platform with embedded Linux as the operating system. A systematic power measurement and analysis method is used in this paper to evaluate the prototype from the perspective of power consumption. The result shows that WiPMP does consume less power and is able to access much more multimedia data than the hard disk based PMP.

In this paper a working multimedia asset management system is presented which provides the means for storage, annotation, retrieval and re-use of any multimedia data such as 3D objects, images, sound, video and text. The working prototype is modular, customizable, secure, offers intranet and Internet connectivity and also software inter-operability as it can be compatible with various well- known, established database and ontology standards. The main innovative aspects of the proposed system are the efficient combination of the semantic aspects with multimedia data and the retrieval engine of the system which combines state-of-the-art 3D content-based algorithms and novel semantic driven, relevance feedback methods.

Due to the explosive growth of the Internet and the pervasion of multimedia, protection of IP rights of digital content in transactions induces people's concerns. Current security requirements and copyright protection mechanisms need to work in real-time. For media service systems in the Internet, user's authentication is most essential in association with the access control of the media system. Many one-time password-based authentication schemes have been proposed. However, none is secure enough. The purpose of a one-time password (OTP) is to make it more difficult to gain unauthorized access to restricted resources. These schemes are specially fit for media services in the Internet since they will frustrate the attacker's attempt. Lin, Shen and Hwang proposed a strong-password authentication scheme using smart cards. Later, Ku proposed a hash-based strong- password authentication scheme without using smart card to enhance the security. However, it still has the intrinsic weakness and suffers some attacks. In this paper, we enhance the Ku's scheme and propose a novel one-time-password authentication scheme in media services.

This paper presents an architecture called social distributed hash table (SDHT) that combines strengths of distributed hash table (DHT) algorithms and social networks making mobile search fast and context oriented. The paper presents possible implementations of the proposed architecture in the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) and as a standalone SIP based system. The architecture forms a cost efficient platform for providing innovative mobile services that take advantage of social context of human communication. The architecture can be used to deploy a global virtual mobile network by placing SDHT nodes in different geographical regions. The paper also presents a content sharing inside community service.

Recent years have seen that WWW is becoming a flourishing social media which enables individuals to easily share opinions, experiences and expertise at the push of a single button. With the pervasive usage of instant messaging systems and the fundamental shift in the ease of publishing content, social network researchers and graph theory researchers are now concerned with inferring community structures by analyzing the linkage patterns among individuals and web pages. Although the investigation of community structures has motivated many diverse algorithms, most of them are unsuitable for large-scale social networks because of the computational cost. Moreover, in addition to identify the possible community structures, how to define and explain the discovered communities is also significant in many practical scenarios. In this paper, we present the algorithm ComTector(Community DeTector) which is more efficient for the community detection in large-scale social networks based on the nature of overlapping communities in the real world. This algorithm does not require any priori knowledge about the number or the original division of the communities. Because real networks are often large sparse graphs, its running time is thus O(C × Tri2), where C is the number of the detected communities and Tri is the number of the triangles in the given network for the worst case. Then we propose a general naming method by combining the topological information with the entity attributes to define the discovered communities. With respected to practical applications, ComTector is challenged with several real life networks including the Zachary Karate Club, American College Football, Scientific Collaboration, and Telecommunications Call networks. Experimental results show that this algorithm can extract meaningful communities that are agreed with both of the objective facts and our intuitions. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper introduces the software framework MMER Lab which allows an effective assembly of modular signal processing systems optimized for memory efficiency and performance. Our C/C++ framework is designed to constitute the basis of a well organized and simplified development process in industrial and academic research teams. It supports the structuring of modular systems by provision of basic data-, parameter-, and command-interfaces, ensuring the re-usability of the system components. Due to the underlying multi-threading capabilities, the applications built in MMER Lab are enabled to fully exploit the increasing computational power of multi-core CPU architectures. This feature is carried out by a buffering concept which controls the data flow between the connected modules and allows for the parallel processing of consecutive signal segments (e.g. video frames). We introduce the concept of the multi-threading environment and the data flow architecture with its comfortable programming interface. We illustrate the proposed module concept for the generic assembly of processing chains and show applications from the area of video analysis and pattern

Region of interest(ROI) plays an important role in image analysis. In this paper, an efficient approach for content based image retrieval combining both color and texture features using three ROIs is proposed. Firstly, segment image to three parts using K-means algorithm. Secondly, select three ROIs from the three parts and then extract color features and texture features of ROIs. The similarity of two images will be determined by the similarities between pairs of ROIs. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is encouraging with a successful retrieval rate.

The usage of mobile phones has rapidly increased in the recent years. As the result of this, many companies have appeared at the markets that propose various services for mobile communication. Therefore, the customer's choice of the telephone provider depends both on the cost policy and the proposed services of the companies. In our work, innovative services for providers are introduced. They implement both centralized and decentralized control of mobile phones by having access to the kernel of the operating system running on the mobile phone. The delivery of multimedia contents to the mobile device can be done using one of the following options: direct communication between two mobile phones or indirect communication between two mobile phones via a server providing the multimedia content. This leads to an IP-based distributed multimedia mobile system in local and global areas. Our research in this field shows that mobile devices are comparable to any computer in the network that gives opportunity to download multimedia information. Our demonstration with client and server software will show the functional features of the developed system.
