Today, people collect their personal multimediacontent on home media servers. In addition to consuming their content on TV sets, people are using mobile multimedia players, PCs and even mobile phones. Since those terminals have various capabilities, it is necessary to adapt the content to a more device specific version. For audio, video, and graphics scalable codecs exist which realize this goal. For multimedia presentations no such scalable coding is available. This paper introduces a multichannel distribution system in home media gateways, this implies that a multimedia presentation can to be created once, and consumed on every possible terminal. The introduced multichannel distribution system is realized by combining MPEG-21 technology with existing device specific presentation languages. This results in a device agnostic Digital Item which can be transformed into a device specific presentation. The resulted presentation takes advantage of the full potential of a terminal.

In a digital TV system, the Conditional access (CA) system is essential to protect programs from unauthorized access. However, the encryption technique alone is not sufficient to protect or control the use of contents after decryption. To provide flexible and complete Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection on the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programs, we propose a method that adapts the MPEG-21 REL technology and integrates it into a DVB-T system. By extending the Service Information (SI) section of a DVB stream to include an REL license, the transmitted content can be conveniently consumed and legally protected. Our design is verified by an experimental hardware system. The results show that the proposed method can provide both the conditional access functionality and the usage control of broadcasted contents.

Healthcare is a data-rich but information-poor domain. Terabytes of multimedia medical data are being generated on a monthly basis in a typical healthcare organization in order to document patients' health status and care process. Government and health-related organizations are pushing for fully electronic, cross-institution, integrated Electronic Health Records to provide a better, cost effective and more complete access to this data. However, provision of efficient access to the content of such records for timely and decision-enabling information extraction will not be available. Such a capability is essential for providing efficient decision support and objective evidence to clinicians. In addition researchers, medical students, patients, and payers could also benefit from it. We present the idea of concept-based multimedia health records, which aims at organizing the health records at the information level. We will explore the opportunities and possibilities that such an organization will provide, what role the field of multimediacontent management could play to materialize this type of health record organization, and what the challenges will be in the quest for realizing the *** believe that the field of multimedia can play a very active role in taking healthcare information systems to the next level by facilitating the access to decision-enabling information for different types of users in healthcare. Due to the diverseness of video data, algorithms whose design considers the properties of the different video classes are required Therefore, different approaches exist to extract a perceptual hash. In this article, we propose a histogram-based perceptual hashing algorithm for minimally changing video sequences. In this paper, we propose the seamless video transmission scheme over wireless LANs during fast handover in Mobile IPv6. In fact, a mobile node cannot receive the IP packets during handover. A number of extensions to fast handover for mobile IPv6 have been introduced to recover its weakness. Fast handover algorithm in Mobile IPv6 allows the new access router in the adjacent cell to pre-buffer the data packets of a mobile node to prevent packet loss. In a mobile communication environment, however, transmission of multimedia data should consider the realtimeliness of the data. Fourier descriptors (FFT) and Hu's seven moment invariants (HSMI) are among the most popular shape-based image descriptors and have been used in various applications, such as recognition, indexing, and retrieval. In this work, we propose to use the invariance properties of Hu's seven moment invariants, as shape feature descriptors, for relevance identification in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. The purpose of relevance identification is to find a collection of images that are statistically similar to, or match with, an original query image from within a large visual database. An automatic relevance identification module in the search engine is structured around an unsupervised learning algorithm, the self-organizing tree map (SOTM). In this paper we also proposed a new ranking function in the structure of the SOTM that exponentially ranks the retrieved images based on their similarities with respect to the query image. Furthermore, we propose to extend our studies to optimize the contribution of individual feature descriptors for enhancing the retrieval results. The proposed CBIR system is compatible with the different architectures of other CBIR systems in terms of its ability to adapt to different similarity matching algorithms for relevance identification purposes, whilst offering flexibility of choice for alternative optimization and weight estimation techniques. Experimental results demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the proposed CBIR system.

We present a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that supports what you see is what you pay. In our system, multimedia is compressed with a scalable codec and encrypted preserving the scalable granularity and multi-access capability. This paper focuses on the DRM modules enabling efficient key generation and management. We employ a light license server which stores only the master keys of content publishers, which are used to regenerate decryption keys for clients during license acquisition. All the remaining information needed in key generation is efficiently packaged in a DRM header of protected content. The DRM header is sent to a license server during license acquisition to allow the license server to generate a single key for a requested access, which is sent to the client in a license along with the acquired rights. The key is used by the client to generate all the remaining keys of subordinate accesses.
