In order to enable transparent and convenient use of multimedia content across a wide range of networks and devices, content adaptation is an important issue within multimedia frameworks. The so called digital item adaptation (DIA) standard is one of the core concepts of the MPEG-21 framework that will support the adaptation of multimedia resources according to device capabilities, underlying network characteristics, and user preferences. Most multimedia adaptation engines for providing universal multimedia access (UMA) scale the content with respect to terminal capabilities and resource constraints. This paper focuses on the cross-modal adaptation decision taking process considering the user environment and terminal capabilities as well as resource limitations on the server, network, and client side. This approach represents a step toward increased universal multimedia experience (UME). Based on four different algorithms for solving this optimization process, we present an evaluation of results gained by running their implementations on different test networks

In the medical field, digital images are becoming more and more important for diagnostics and therapy of the patients. At the same time, the development of new technologies has increased the amount of image data produced in a hospital. This creates a demand for access methods that offer more than text-based queries for retrieval of the information. In this paper is proposed a framework for the retrieval of medical images that allows the use of different algorithms for the search of medical images by similarity. The framework also enables the search for textual information from an associated medical report and DICOM header information. The proposed system can be used for support of clinical decision making and is intended to be integrated with an open source picture, archiving and communication systems (PACS). The BIRAM has the following advantages: (i) Can receive several types of algorithms for image similarity search;(ii) Allows the codification of the report according to a medical dictionary, improving the indexing of the information and retrieval;(iii) The algorithms can be selectively applied to images with the appropriated characteristics, for instance, only in magnetic resonance images. The framework was implemented in Java language using a MS access 97 database. The proposed framework can still be improved, by the use of regions of interest (ROI), indexing with slim-trees and integration with a PACS Server.

The current trend in the evolution of the Web is towards an every increasing demand for personalized Web contents. Tailoring Web resources to the characteristics of heterogeneous client devices and user preferences opens two main novel issues in the research area of content generation and delivery. First, the high computational cost characterizing most adaptation services requires efficient and scalable support systems. Second, adaptation services typically rely on user information that may include sensitive data. When system scalability is achieved through architectures that are distributed over a geographical area, privacy issues concerning the user profiles management become particularly critical. In this paper we propose a distributed architecture for the Ubiquitous Web access that guarantees high performance and privacy of sensitive user information by splitting the adaptation services over the nodes of a two-level topology. We evaluate the performance and the overheads of the proposed architecture in order to understand to which extent it is convenient to distribute adaptation services over multiple nodes that are geographically distributed.

Possible solutions to the management of multichannel delivering, production on demand, and containment of sale prices in the digital multimedia content production could be the automating, accelerating and restructuring the production process. An encryption scheme is proposed that considers hierarchies in media, such as text, images, sound, and so on, in a composite multimedia content to enable versatile access control. In the proposed scheme, a content provider has only one managed key (the master key) for a particular multimedia content, and an user who is permitted to access a reserved content objects in the composite content receives only one key that is subordinately generated from the master key. The key generated from the identical master key is delivered to another user, and this permits the user to access different objects. This scheme introduces a new key concept, namely "unusable key", to keep all objects encrypted in a particular medium and to simultaneously decrypt several objects in other media. The other new key, "numbering key," is also used in this scheme to support simultaneous partial decryption of multiple images that are coded with scalable coding technology. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper presents a similarity-aware multiagent-based web content management scheme. Based on a set of similarity measures that assess Similarities between web documents, we propose a similarity-aware multi-cache architecture, in which the cached web documents are organized into a number of sub-caches according to their content similarity. A predictor is then developed to predict the cached documents a user might access next. Once a pre-fetching plan was formed, a set of agents are employed to work together for pre-fetching document between proxy caches and browsing clients. Preliminary experiments have shown that our predictor offers superior performance when compared with some existing prediction algorithms.

A novel indexing and access method, called affinity hybrid tree (AH-tree), is proposed to organize large image data sets efficiently and to support popular image access mechanisms like content-based image retrieval (CBIR) by embedding the high-level semantic image-relationship in the access mechanism as it is. AH-tree combines space-based and distance-based indexing techniques to form a hybrid structure which is efficient in terms of computational overhead and fairly accurate in producing query results close to human perception. algorithms for similarity (range and k-nearest neighbor) queries are implemented. Results from elaborate experiments are reported which depict a low computational overhead in terms of the number of I/O and distance computations and a high relevance of query results. The proposed index structure solves the existing problems of introducing high-level image relationships in a retrieval mechanism without going through the pain of translating the content-similarity measurement into feature-level equivalence and yet maintaining an efficient structure to organize the large sets of images

eChronicle applications are inherently event-centric, enabling users to find and explore important events in an application domain and providing unified access to any media that document them. Today’s multimedia data management components such as multimedia databases, however, are largely media-centric, considering events - if at all - just as one of many pieces of media metadata. Obfuscating event exploration and event-driven access to media, they are only of limited use for the implementation of eChronicle applications. Using a concrete eChronicle application in the defense domain, this paper motivates the need for event-centric multimedia data management components. As a foundation, the paper proposes the multimedia event model and discusses essential design considerations for the development of that model. {\rm E}’s genericity and profound adaptability to varying application needs make the model a suitable foundation for reusable multimedia data management components that are useful not only for eChronicle applications, but for any multimedia application where event-driven access to content is of interest.

This paper presents two novel heuristic algorithms for the design of wireless access multimedia networks. Emphasis was given to the design of CDMA based wireless multimedia networks and fixed wireless multimedia networks. The objectives of these methods are first to place a number of access points/base stations in a number of candidate sites and then to assign a number of fixed wireless terminals to the selected access points/base stations. Both methods are based on graph theory and they are essentially greedy algorithms. Except from capacity constraints, wireless reception characteristics are also considered. The algorithms are capable of designing medium and large-scale networks at polynomial time. Both algorithms were compared with an analogous optimisation problem through a series of tests. The results indicate that as regards design costs the performance of the heuristics is very close to this of the equivalent optimisation problem. The solution times for the heuristics are smaller especially when the number of the candidate access points/base stations becomes large
