The explosive growth of the network, end-host performances and their heterogeneities have resulted ever changing advancement and complexity of distributed computing environments. The users in such environment have not been provided a satisfactory service when they access the required objects. In this paper we focus on adaptive WWW content delivery, which is the most ubiquitous and popular way of information dissemination, primarily in the form of Web-server, Web-browser interaction. In these applications, we address controlling the quality of delivery and time of access tradeoff of the WWW contents. We implement this as a httpa protocol, which is an adaptive transcoding methodology for embedded images in Web pages, according to available channel bandwidth and other accessibility parameters at the client side. Compared to the conventional form of server side adaptive content delivery proposed in the literature, we propose a hybrid form of adaptation: client side progressive parameter estimation and server side transcoding of images, which is more scalable and flexible. We present a novel algorithm for structural analysis of audio to detect repetitive patterns that are suitable for content-based audio information retrieval systems, since repetitive patterns can provide valuable information about the content of audio, such as a chorus or a concept. The audio spectrum flatness (ASF) feature of the MPEG-7 standard, although not having been considered as much as other feature types, has been utilized and evaluated as the underlying feature set. Expressive summaries are chosen as the longest patterns by the k-means clustering algorithm. Proposed approach is evaluated on a test bed consisting of popular song and speech clips based on the ASF feature. The well known Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) are also considered in the experiments for the evaluation of features. Experiments show that, all the repetitive patterns and their locations are obtained with the accuracy of 93% and 78% for music and speech, respectively

This paper presents a new framework that integrates relevance feedback into region-based image retrieval (RBIR) systems based on radial basis function network (RBFN). A modified unsupervised subtractive clustering algorithm is proposed for RBFN center selection according to the characteristics of region-based image representation. A new kernel function of RBFN is introduced for image similarity comparison under region-based representation. The underlying network parameters (weight and width) are then optimized using a supervised gradient-descent training strategy. Experimental results using a database of 10,000 images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid learning approach

Lecture recording provides learning material for local and distance education. The TeleTeachingTool uses the most flexible screen recording technique to capture virtually any material displayed during a presentation. With its built-in annotation system teachers can add freehand notes and emphasize important parts. Unlike other screen recorders, our implementation offers slide-hosed navigation, full text search and annotated scripts, which is obtained by automated post-production. This paper presents how to achieve live access to any slide with corresponding annotations created earlier during the presentation, although annotations are not associated with slides. For this the post-processing algorithms must be adapted to work on the fly while the presentation is still in progress and an interlinkage between slides and annotations must be achieved

This paper presents an interactive video event retrieval system based on improved adaboost learning. This system consists of three main steps. Firstly, a long video sequence is partitioned into several video clips by using a distribution-based approach instead of detecting shot transition boundaries. Secondly, audiovisual features (i.e., color, motion and audio features) are extracted from video sequences for video clip representation. Finally, the modified AdaBoost learning algorithm is employed for interactive video retrieval with relevance feedback. This AdaBoost learning algorithm differs from conventional AdaBoost learning methods mainly in the selection of paired video features for the weak classifiers. Experimental results show improved performance of video retrieval by using the proposed system

In this paper, we propose multi-channel time division multiple access (MC/TDMA) scheme which provides proportional service differentiation while achieving high throughput in a multichannel wireless network. Proportional service differentiation is achieved by scheduling traffic over multiple non- overlapping channels using the modified open-shop scheduling problem analogy. This analogy allows us to use known optimal algorithms that have been previously developed for the open-shop scheduling problem. With extensive performance evaluation using OPNET simulator, we show that the proposed MC/TDMA scheme provides proportional service differentiation while achieving high throughput. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work for provisioning proportional service differentiation in wireless networks using multiple channels.

This paper describes the part of the European PrestoSpace project dedicated to the study and development of a metadata access and delivery (MAD) system for television broadcast archives. The mission of the MAD system, inside the wider perspective of the PrestoSpace factory, is to generate, validate and deliver to the archive users metadata created through the employment of both automatic and manual information extraction tools. Automatic tools include audiovisual content analysis and semantic analysis of text extracted by automatic speech recognition (ASR). With the widespread availability of inexpensive broadband Internet connections for home-users, a large number of bandwidth-intensive applications previously not feasible have now become practical. This is the case for multimedia live streaming, for which end-user's dial-up/ISDN modem connections once were the bottleneck. The bottleneck is now mostly found on the server side: the bandwidth required for serving many clients at once is large and thus very costly to the broadcasting entity. Peer-to-peer systems for on-demand and live streaming have proved to be an encouraging solution, since they can shift the burden of content distribution from the server to the users of the network. In this work we introduce PULSE, a P2P system for live streaming whose main goals are flexibility, scalability, and robustness. We present the fundamental concepts that stand behind the design of PULSE along with its intended global behavior, and describe in detail the main algorithms running on its nodes.

The increasing popularity of multimedia streaming applications introduces new challenges in content distribution networks. Streaming services such as video on demand (VoD) or digital television over the Internet (IPTV) are very bandwidth-intensive and cannot tolerate the high delays and poor loss properties of today's Internet. To solve these problems, caching (a sliding segment of popular streams at proxies could be envisaged. This paper presents a novel caching algorithm and architecture for time-shifted television (tsTV) and its implementation using the IETF's real-time streaming protocol (RTSP). The algorithm uses sliding caching windows with sizes depending on content popularity and/or distance metrics. The caches can work in stand-alone mode as well as in co-operative mode. This paper shows that the network load can already be reduced considerably using small diskless caches, especially when using cooperative caching. A brief overview of the functionality of a prototype proxy implementation is presented as well
