In this paper the performance of layered piece-picking algorithms for Bittorrent-based peer-to-peer systems is evaluated and compared to traditional single layer solutions. In a Bittorrent-based peer-to-peer system, the piece-picking algorithm needs to ensure that the pieces of an audiovisual content are received in time to ensure smooth playback of the content. For layered content provided in multiple qualities, the task of the algorithm becomes more complex, as it has to consider the layer of the pieces to be fetched in addition to the deadline. Thus, the goal of the layered piece-picking algorithm is to ensure that the best possible quality under the given network conditions is received while the playback is not disturbed. To illustrate the advantages of such a layered piece-picking algorithm, its performance is evaluated and compared to a single layer piece-picking algorithm. The results show that layered piece-picking algorithms can significantly improve the quality in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio.

During the last decades multimedia processing has emerged as an important technology to retrieve content based on similar data. Moreover, recent developments in the fields of high definition (HD) multimediacontent and personal content collections (personal camcorders and digital still image cameras) tend to generate a huge volume of multimedia data everyday. Thus, the need for a meaningful, quick organization and access to generated content is now more than necessary;however, it still remains a rather difficult problem to be tackled both by humans and computers. In this paper we propose an intelligent extension of traditional image analysis methodologies towards more efficient digital content retrieval. The main idea is to extend local feature extraction methodologies by introducing additional geometrical constraints in the process. The proposed approach is tested and evaluated on a number of publicly available image datasets and results are very promising.

The off-chip memory communication is often a critical part of a video processing system. Traditional cache usually behaves poor since some video algorithms such as H.264 motion compensation tend to access memory in an inefficient way. Based on the analysis of cache line fetch efficiency, we find out that more than 10% fetches are inefficient. In this paper, we propose a Heterogeneous Associative Cache (HA Cache) architecture, in which there is an additional special way with a smaller cache line size, special mapping strategy and replacement policy. This scheme can effectively reduce power, cache space, and bandwidth wasted on useless data. By adding a special way to the traditional 2-way set-associative cache (with 1/8 cache size increase), the HA Cache can save up to 10% memory access. In most cases, it is even better than doubling the traditional cache size.

Color features of an image are the most widely used features in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) [1][6] systems. Specifically histogram-based algorithms are considered to be effective for color image indexing. Color histogram [2] describes the global distribution of pixels of an image which is insensitive to variations in scale and easy to calculate. However, the high dimensionality of feature vectors results in high computation cost and space cost. In this paper, we mainly focus on color features and propose a novel method named Color Frequency Sequence Difference (CFSD) to express color images, which only has one numerical value in one color channel The CFSD is combined with information entropy to realize indexing. With an increasing number of site-specific interactive artworks, museums need to question - not only for future generations, but even more importantly, for current audiences how is it possible to access and preserve archived material. This practice-based research evaluates the possibilities and problems of Augmented Reality as a tool to reactivate archived material with an exemplary investigation at ZKM, Karlsruhe in 2013. During this research, I explored different methods for offering insight into a series of works in the publicly accessible foyer. In doing so, I encountered several difficulties but also benefits, which will be discussed in this paper. The management,of the vast amount of media assets captured at every day events such as meetings, birthday parties, vacation, and conferences has become an increasingly challenging problem. Today, most media management applications are media-centric. This means, they put the captured media assets into the center of the management. However, in recent years it has been proposed that events are a much better abstraction of human experience and thus provide a more appropriate means for managing media assets. Consequently, approaches that include events into their media management solution have been explored. However, they typically consider events only as some more metadata that can be extracted from the media assets. In addition, today's applications and approaches concentrate on particular problems such as event detection, tagging, sharing, classification, or clustering and are often focused on a single media type. In this paper, we argue for the benefits of an event-centric media management (EMMa) approach that-looks at the problem of media management holistically. Based on a generic event model, we specify a media event model for-the EMMa approach. The single -phases and processes of the EMMa approach are defined in a general process chain for-an event-centric media management, the EMMa cycle. This cycle follows the event concept throughout all phases and processes of the chain and-puts the concept of events in the center of the media management. Based on the media event model and EMMa cycle, we design a component-based architecture for the EMMa approach and conduct an implementation of the approach.

The acquisition of geographical video content is growing rapidly, raising issues of the best ways in which access to that content can be provided to the user. The easiest, and thus dominant, approach is to treat this content as regular video content and permit the user to access it via media-player-like control sets. However, we argue that geographical video content can be more effectively accessed when the geographical characteristics of that content are, exploited within the access interface and control set. Consequently, we propose the notion of a geovideoworld, which facilitates immersive, geographically- accurate access to the video content. We derive three media acquisition techniques that may be used to populate the world and three corresponding navigation scenarios that may be used to access the content within the world.

The exceptionally large nature of multimediacontent has motivated the creation of many different compression algorithms and encapsulation formats to make its transportation and storage feasible. Developers of multimedia applications have to deal repeatedly with the massive number of forms in which content is present, turning the single task of media access into an unnecessary challenge. The open source project FOBS provides a way to abstract developers from these difficulties, by offering an intuitive and powerful object oriented multimediaaccess API. FOBS has been conceived to be in-herently platform independent and to be easily adaptable to multiple programming languages, making the addition of multimedia support possible in almost any application.
