Despite the great potential demonstrated by the multimedia-rich data in various business applications, none of the prior research has addressed the design of high-quality access to the multimediacontent in heterogeneous wireless networking environment. In this research, we have presented a partial pre-retrieval and buffering scheme to improve various quality of service (QoS) parameters for multimediacontent for in such context. Specifically it addresses the three important QoS parameters namely delay, delay variation, and information loss that directly impact the mobile user's quality of experience indicators. Here we have also presented the analysis of the buffering requirements and the related issues for high-quality access to the multimediacontent in such environment. Results of this research have potential to improve the understanding of these multimedia QoS parameters for ubiquitous wireless infrastructures. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The proposed scheme works both for movies encoded in a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) or a Variable Bit Rate (VBR) format. It is shown experimentally that secondary content in movies can make Video-on-Demand (VoD) broadcasting systems more efficient. An efficient algorithm is given to compute the optimal broadcasting schedule with secondary content, which in particular significantly improves over the best previously known algorithm for computing the optimal broadcasting schedule without secondary content.

Every interaction with multimediacontents in various application domains can be called an Event. Arising from an each Event, there is the opportunity to describe what occurred. However, there are a number of difficulties in providing an accurate report about an Event. Different observers of the Event may have vastly different perspectives, needs, and focuses. They may emphasize certain elements to the detriment of others, or they may describe an Event in a way that others may find confusing. New solutions are required for access, delivery, management, and protection process of different content types in a transparent way to many different users on multi-platform. In this paper, we design and develop Event Notification System(ENS) to support the transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across a wide range of networks and devices. ENS can be used for monitoring illegal contentaccess, statistical report such as calculating the royalty for copyright and calculating the advertising rate, and technical report in ubiquitous multi-platform environment.

This paper describes the AutoQoS mechanism, which improves the timeliness of disk accesses for multimedia applications without requiring any explicit information about their constraints. multimedia applications typically have periodic time constraints, meaning that they must complete data processing at periodic intervals in order to function correctly. This requirement extends to the disk system, because the application must access data on time in order to meet deadlines. By using Quality of Service algorithms for disk services, an application may receive enough bandwidth and isolation from other disk accesses to read data on time. Nevertheless, past approaches are restrictive because they require that disk bandwidth or deadlines be known and specified in advance. Our system infers from I/O behavior the bandwidth requirement of multimedia streams, and automatically adjusts allocations in order to provide Quality of Service without knowing the constraints or requiring intervention from the application.

The diversity of end-terminal and access network capabilities as well as the dynamic nature of wireless connections pose significant challenges to providers of multimedia streaming services. In this paper, we present a system based on MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) technologies that automatically adapts scalable multimedia resources, like upcoming MPEG-4 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) streams, in a generic and transparent way to the user and session context. This context includes terminal and network capabilities as well as user characteristics. A server side adaptation engine reacts to context changes by dynamic decision taking and accordingly modified bitstream adaptation. Furthermore, novel concepts are presented that facilitate multimedia adaptation in a distributed fashion along the delivery path.

The concepts and techniques that have dominated wired multimedia communications are not well suited for dynamic wireless environments. In recent years, research focus has been to adapt existing algorithms and protocols to the rapidly varying resources of wireless networks. For instance, packetization strategies are solely designed based on application layer information. While this design provides adequate support for multimedia applications over the Internet, it results often in poor performance in crowded wireless networks, when the interference is high or when the stations are mobile. In this paper, we show that by deploying a cross-layer aware packetization strategy, which explicitly considers the deployed compression techniques and content characteristics at the application layer as well as the protection methods at the lower layers for different channel conditions, significant improvements in multimedia performance can be obtained.

Many cross-layer design approaches for wireless multimedia transmission over various networks have been proposed. Truly cross-layer design solutions require joint optimization of multimedia coding, transport/network layer, medium access layer, and physical layer transmission strategies and protocols. The solution often becomes impractical because: i) its computational complexity is high, and ii) it needs to be recomputed as some inputs, such as the content characteristics or network conditions change. To this effect, we propose a novel framework for cross-layer design, which features: i) the joint design strategy selection is adaptive not only to network conditions but also to multimediacontent characteristics, ii) the joint design strategy selection is based on off-line learning to address the computational complexity issue, and iii) the off-line learning stage employs a new multiple objective optimization solution.

In this paper a new multimedia caching strategy is proposed that includes several optimizations to the state of the art. This algorithm takes its roots from the interval caching algorithms but it evolves towards a more adaptive approaching that could obtain a better performance for variable bit-rate streams and serving media stored on multiple disks following different distributions. All of this without loosing competitiveness for constant bit-rate streams on a single disk. All this efforts are oriented towards the consecution of MUPIC (Multi Policy Integrated Cache), a cache architecture designed to fit the requirements of an integrated storage system that meet the requirements of deterministic applications, multimediasystems, and traditional best-effort applications altogether.
