The article describes the status of our ongoing R&D at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) towards the development of an advanced multimedia database biomedical information system that supports content-based image retrieval (CBIR). NLM maintains a collection of 17,000 digitized spinal X-rays along with text survey data from the Second National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES II). These data serve as a rich data source for epidemiologists and researchers of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. It is currently possible to access these through text keyword queries using our Web-based Medical Information Retrieval System (WebMIRS). CBIR methods developed specifically for biomedical images could offer direct visual searching of these images by means of example image or user sketch. We are building a system which supports hybrid queries that have text and image-content components. R&D goals include developing algorithms for robust image segmentation for localizing and identifying relevant anatomy, labeling the segmented anatomy based on its pathology, developing suitable indexing and similarity matching methods for images and image features, and associating the survey text information for query and retrieval along with the image data. Some highlights of the system developed in MATLAB and Java are: use of a networked or local centralized database for text and image data;flexibility to incorporate new research work;provides a means to control access to system components under development;and use of XML for structured reporting. The article details the design, features, and algorithms in this third revision of this prototype system, CBIR3.

A neglected challenge in existing e-Learning (eL) systems is providing access to multimedia to all users regardless of environmental conditions such as diverse device capabilities, the heterogeneity of the underlying IP network, and user modality preference. This paper proposes a novel two-tier transcoding framework capable of adapting eL multimedia to meet the end-user environmental challenges. This two-tier architecture consists of 1)an application layer transcoder that adapts the presentation format of the eL content as viewed in a browser to meet device capabilities and user modality preference, 2) a bitstream transcoder that transforms multimedia streams to conform to the device's processing capabilities and to adapt the encoding rate to meet the network's fluctuating bandwidth. Results demonstrate the eL multimedia transcoding for mobile devices and its low overhead delays. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In this paper, an approach for providing unified access to heterogeneous distributed cultural heritage collections is presented. The proposed approach is developed within the framework of the REACH Greek National Project with the overall aim to provide a Web portal enabling access to different databases of cultural content with emphasis on multimedia material. In order to achieve this, the project employs ontology-based representation of cultural content, multimedia content-based search algorithms, hybrid ontology and content-based access and user-friendly search interfaces. This fusion approach provides users with resources for building queries of multimedia repositories sequentially using multiple individual search tools, and performs higher quality searching. In the current stage of development, real content such as inscriptions and coins from the Greco-Roman time period, has successfully been incorporated in the system

Usage of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) is confined to financial transactions in the present world scenario. multimedia usage for finance is inhibited by several factors including security and lack of flexible user interface models to proliferate the public environment usage criterion. Financial services become more attractive when the user obtains a plurality of services over existing access methodology using personalized web pages, animated and other customized mobile agents to mimic the usage patterns. We present an intelligent and novel approach to facilitate and propel financial and non-financial services for public environments that seamlessly integrate wireless multimedia applications and digital content over the financial services network. Our design is based on the Embedded ATM access Point that uses secure software architecture with V2olP stack to facilitate the usage and creation of a multitude of new services. Dynamic and Adaptive Context-Sensitive GUI with animated icons form the trend for the next generation of compact ubiquitous devices that proliferate the home network and public environment.

multimedia databases usually store thousands of audio files such as music, speech and other sounds. One of the challenges in modern multimedia system is to classify and retrieve certain kinds of audio from the database. This paper proposes a novel classification algorithm for a content-based audio retrieval. The algorithm, called Gradient-Based Fuzzy c-Means Algorithm with Divergence Measure (GBFCM(DM)), is a neural network-based algorithm which utilizes the Divergence Measure to exploit the statistical nature of the audio data to improve the classification accuracy. Experiment results confirm that the proposed algorithm outperforms 3.025%-5.05% in accuracy in comparison with conventional algorithms such as the k-Means or the Self-Organizing Map. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This work aims a two-fold contribution: it presents a software to analyse logfiles and visualize popular web hot spots and, additionally, presents an algorithm to use this information in order to identify subsets of the website that display large access patterns. Such information is extremely valuable to the site maintainer, since it indicates points that may need content intervention or/and site graph restructuring. Experimental validation verified that the visualization tool, when coupled with algorithms that infer frequent traversal patterns, is both effective in indicating popular hot spots and efficient in doing so by using graph-based representations of popular traversals.

Universal multimedia access (UMA) refers to accessing multimedia content over a wide range of client terminals and network capacities. Scalable coding is a very popular technique to enable UMA for video. Overhead introduced by the scalable coding approach limits the number of layers that can be stored for each video. Therefore some clients may be served the closest available quality than the best-fit quality. This is a major drawback of scalable coding from the end-user perspective. We propose to employ transcoding to tailor content exactly to the client's best-fit quality when the required layer is not stored. Inserting a transcoder in the server-client path introduces new challenges in deciding the layering structure (number of layers, bandwidth per layer) of a video. The optimal layering structure should be decided based on factors like total I/O bandwidth penalty incurred due to layering and transcoding effort required to service the "non-layered" versions. The solution to this problem is further complicated by practical issues like diverse popularity of video objects and resource availability. Another issue that we address in this paper is reducing WAN bandwidth penalty incurred due to transport and coding over-head inherent to scalable coding. This particular problem applies to all schemes that use layered encoding to broadcast video. We map the above mentioned problems onto a 0-1 multiple choice knapsack structure and propose an algorithm to find a near-optimal solution. The uniqueness of our approach not only lies in the streaming model but also in the integrated manner in which we address a variety of issues put forth by layered coding. © 2005 IEEE.

Web caching is intended to reduce network traffic, server load and user-perceived retrieval latency. Web pre-fetching, which can be considered as "active" caching, builds on regular web caching, minimizing further a web user's access delay. To be effective, however, the pre-fetching techniques must be able to predict subsequent web access with minimum computational overheads. This paper presents a similarity-based mechanism to support similarity-aware web document pre-fetching between proxy caches and browsing clients. We first define a set of measures to assess similarities between web documents, and then propose a multi-cache architecture to cache web documents based on those similarities. A predictor is developed to support the similarity-aware document pre-fetching algorithm. Preliminary experiments have shown that our predictor offers superior performance when compared with some existing prediction algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.

Mobile learning means that the learning contents can be displayed anytime, anywhere, and with any kind of presenting device. Learning content Management systems (LCMSs) usually provide convenient authoring tools to help instructors to construct their learning contents, which may include static document such as powerpoint, word, pdf document and dynamic multimedia document such as video and audio files, and then integrate these learning contents to provide learners with proper contents rendering through access devices. However, most of LCMSs are based on desktop computer environments, rather than mobile devices. Context-Sensitivity is an application of software system's ability to sense and analyze context from various sources. In this paper, we develop a Context-Sensitive Middleware (CSM) for LCMS to transform the same learning contents to different mobile devices, so mobile learning can be supported. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents an adaptive filtering algorithm for the delivery of multimedia content with different quality of service (QoS) requirements in time-varying wideband code-division multiple access (W-CDMA) cellular networks. The algorithm objective is to guarantee levels of quality for two different user defined profiles (premium, or economy), while attempting to maximize the allocation of the radio channel bandwidth and maintaining the QoS requirements of downloaded traffic flows (audio, video, and data). Our proposed solution is based upon utilizing genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve a multi-objective function that selects, during a control period, the bit rates and formats for the media codecs of downloaded traffic flows and assigns the air interface channel rate and power to each user, subject to different constraints. To show the performance of the algorithm, W-CDMA systems with and without filtering capabilities are compared.
