Personalized education (PE) emphasizes the importance of individual differences in learning. To deliver personalized e-learning services and content, PE encompasses the abilities of identifying and understanding individual learner's needs and competence so as to deploy appropriate learning pedagogy and content to enhance learning. In this paper, we introduce a hidden Markov model based classification approach to enable a multimedia e-learning system to characterize different types of users through their navigation or contentaccess patterns. Our experiments show that the proposed approach is capable of assigning student users to their corresponding categories with high accuracies. The results of such classifications would find applications in adaptive user interface design, user profiling and as supportive tools in personalized e-learning

The appetite for consuming content and the accessibility of information continues to increase at a rapid pace. access devices, with a large set of differing terminal and network capabilities, possess the functionality to be used in different locations and environments: anywhere and anytime. Their users, however, are currently not given tools to deal efficiently with all the intricacies of this new multimedia usage context. Thus, new solutions are required for the access, delivery, management and protection processes of these different content types in an integrated and harmonized way, and they should be implemented in a manner that is entirely transparent to the many different users of multimedia services. In this paper, we design and develop the system for event notification service to support the transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across a wide range of networks and devices.

An integrated, reconfigurable, adaptable and open system for mining, indexing and retrieving multimedia information based on a mobile agent technology scheme is presented. The system consists of three integral subsystems, namely the acquisition, the transformation and the distribution modules. Innovative algorithms are used to extract information from Web sources, transform it and deliver it to the end users. The system supports efficient content adaptation mechanisms, textual and visual summarization schemes (both sequential and hierarchical), automatic language translation, ontological representation, visual processing and Web-based data mining. In this paper a new multimedia caching strategy is proposed that includes several optimizations to the state of the art. This algorithm takes its roots from the interval caching algorithms but it evolves towards a more adaptive approaching that could obtain a better performance for variable bit-rate streams and serving media stored on multiple disks following different distributions. All of this without loosing competitiveness for constant bit-rate streams on a single disk. All this efforts are oriented towards the consecution of MUPIC (multi policy integrated cache), a cache architecture designed to fit the requirements of an integrated storage system that meet the requirements of deterministic applications, multimediasystems, and traditional best-effort applications altogether.

Over the past few years, with the rapid adoption of broadband communication and advances in multimediacontent capture and delivery, Web-based meetings and lectures, also referred to as e-meeting and e-lecture, have become popular among businesses and academic institutions because of their cost savings and capabilities in providing self-paced education and convenient contentaccess and retrieval. In fact, the technological achievements in capture, analysis, access, and delivery of e-meeting and e-lecture media have already resulted in several working systems that are currently of regular usage. Due to the enormous increase in the stored digital contents, search and retrieval functionalities are necessary in multimediasystems. Though processor speed for standard PCs (Personal Computers) is experiencing an almost exponential growth, the memory subsystem handicapped by lower frequencies and a physical I/O (Input/Output) limitation reflects the bottleneck of common computer architectures. As a result, many applications such as database management systems remain so dependent on memory throughput that increases in CPU (Central Processing Unit) speeds are no longer helpful. Because average bandwidth is crucial for system performance, our research has focused especially on techniques for efficient storage and retrieval of multimedia data. The digital-content market is urging better pricing and value-for-money for industry products and services. This is clearly evident in the recent price policies of majors. Production costs must be drastically reduced without affecting product quality. content providers, aggregators and distributors constantly need to adopt innovative means of increasing efficiency in order to reduce cost. Possible solutions to this challenge could be found by automating, accelerating and restructuring production processes. AXMEDIS architecture and tools aim at reaching those results by: (i) reducing costs for content production with artificial intelligence algorithms for content composition, formatting, protection and workflow management, (ii) reducing distribution and integration costs, increasing accessibility, with a P2P platform at B2B level integrating content management systems and workflows, (iii) providing algorithms and tools for innovative and flexible digital rights management, exploiting MPEG-21 and overcoming its limits, supporting several business and transactions models. Large amount of images need an efficient way of retrieving them. The usual approach of manually annotating images and/or providing a syntactic retrieval capability lacks flexibility and comfort. The automatic annotation of images is a main target of the image retrieval community. These so-called content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems focus on primitive features, as Eakins and Graham (1999) name them. Description logics (DL) offer a useful contribution to content-based image retrieval while allowing logical reasoning about the semantic contents of the image and ending with consistent classification results. This is a main advantage about traditional classification algorithms. Another advantage is the possibility to use domain knowledge, which is formulated in DL, on the retrieval side, thus offering a semantic retrieval.
