In this work, we propose an intuitive graphic framework for the effective visualization of MPEG-7 low-level features, in the context of classification and annotation of audio-visual documents. This graphic tool is proposed to facilitate the access to the content, and to improve a quick understanding of the semantics associated to the considered document. The main visualization paradigm employed consists in representing a 2D feature space in which the shots of the audiovisual document are located. In another window, the same shots are drawn in a temporal bar that gives the users also the information related to the time domain. In the main window, shots with similar content fall near each other, and the proposed tool offers various functionalities for automatically and semi-automatically finding and annotating shot clusters in the feature space. A video cut detector (CD), a member of the shot boundary detector (SBD) group, is an essential element for spatio-temporal audiovisual (AV) segmentation and various video-processing technologies. Platform, processing and performance constraints forced the development of various dedicated CDs. Future platforms allow the usage of advanced CD algorithms with higher reliability. In order to enable an appropriate trade-off decision to be made between reliability and the required processing power, benchmarking of four CD algorithms has taken place on bases of a generic, culture-diverse multi-genre AV corpus. In terms of complexity/performance trade-off, a field-difference-based CD proved to be optimal.

Advances in networking and content delivery systems are enabling challenging provisioning scenarios where a growing number of users access video on demand (VoD), possibly while moving among different points of attachment to the Internet and using different access terminals. This calls for middleware capable of supporting personalized VoD access by dynamically activating intermediate nodes between VoD servers and clients. The paper proposes MUMOC, a dynamic and flexible overlay infrastructure for the distributed caching of both VoD prefixes and VoD metadata. To achieve openness and easy interoperability with legacy VoD services, MUMOC adopts standard XML-based formats, based on both Dublin Core and MPEG7, to represent VoD metadata. First experimental results show that MUMOC significantly reduces bandwidth utilization and user perceived delays. In addition, notwithstanding the dynamic building of the overlay network and the application-level approach, the introduced overhead is compatible with the strict requirements imposed by multimedia distribution over the best-effort Internet.

Recent technology advances in multimedia communication have ushered in a new era of personal communication. Users can ubiquitously access the Internet via various mobile devices. For the mobile devices featured with lower-bandwidth network connectivity, transcoding can be used to reduce the object size by lowering the quality of a multimedia object. In this paper, we focus on the cache replacement policy in a transcoding proxy, which is a proxy server responsible for transcoding the object and reducing the network traffic. Based on the architecture in prior works, we propose a maximum profit replacement algorithm, abbreviated as MPR. MPR performs cache replacement according to the content in the caching candidate set, which is generated by the concept of dynamic programming. Experimental results show that the the proposed MPR outperforms the prior scheme in terms of the cache hit ratio.

Recent research results in the field of multimediacontent Analysis (MCA) have been marked by an abundance of theoretical and algorithmic solutions covering narrow application domains only. In this paper we analyze this tendency and its origin in more detail and explain why, in our view, this should not be considered "the way to go" in providing easy access to content in multimediasystems and applications of the future. In particular, we concentrate on the case study of digital video, which we see as a straightforward example of multimedia. Through this case study we will discuss the needs and challenges of improving the generic potential of MCA algorithms.

One of the major issues raised by digital rights management systems concerns the protection of the user's privacy and anonymous consumption of content. However, most existing license management schemes for DRM systems do not support the protection of user privacy. Moreover, some other schemes such as PrecePt can only bind the license with a specified device though they concern privacy protection. In this paper, we propose a license management scheme named LMSAT (License Management Scheme with Anonymous Trust) which provides a more powerful and flexible license acquisition and usage tracking scheme to allow the user access the contents anytime, anywhere, and on any compliant devices anonymously.

The paper presents an MPEG-7 MDS-based metadata and user profile model used within an enhanced DTV environment for semantic annotation and personalized access to multiple sports DTV services. It is shown that in order to enable intelligent and personalized processing, management and use of multimediacontent and services in a personalised way, the use of metadata descriptions and adequately formulated user profiles is most important. Application specific semantic metadata and user profile definitions are presented based on MPEG-7 multimedia description schemes (MDS) definitions. Metadata and user profile instances are generated by authoring/annotation tools or specially-designed user profile registration applications respectively. Personalized access to integrated DTV services is achieved by metadata and user profile instance description matching and respective content filtering. At the same time, dynamic client configuration, transparent to the end-user, is accomplished by automatically processing configuration specific metadata descriptions using specially designed application modules at the client side.

Every interaction with multimediacontents in various application domains can be called an event. Arising from an each event, there is the opportunity to describe what occurred. However, there are a number of difficulties in providing an accurate report about an event. Different observers of the event may have vastly different perspectives, needs, and focuses. They may emphasize certain elements to the detriment of others, or they may describe an event in a way that others may find confusing. New solutions are required for access, delivery, management, and protection process of different content types in a transparent way to many different users on multi-platform. In this paper, we design and develop event notification system (ENS) to support the transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across a wide range of networks and devices. ENS can be used for monitoring illegal contentaccess, statistical report such as calculating the royalty for copyright and calculating the advertising rate, and technical report in ubiquitous multi-platform environment.
