Third generation mobile communication systems will provide more advanced types of interactive and distribution services, and video is one of the most prominent applications for multimedia communications. Adapting the media content to different networks characteristics (communication links and access terminals), in order to enable video delivery with acceptable service quality, is one of the most important problems in this setting. In this paper, we consider one of the video adaptation methods, namely video transcoding, and we present new buffer-based strategies for temporal video transcoding in a real-time context. Simulation results show that our strategies achieve a good performance in hard transcoding conditions also.

The abrupt shot change detection is a basic and important technology in content-based video retrieval. Some basic algorithms, such as the pixel-matching algorithm, the histogram algorithm, used to detect abrupt shot change in digital video have existed. But the existing algorithms can not eliminate the influence of the video movement. When much video movement existed, existing algorithms can not perform well. In this paper, a new method based on relation of the partial interframe differences is proposed. It can eliminate the influence of the video movement. The experimental results have showed that the new method performs well both in recall and precision.

cdma2000 1/spl times/EV-DO, one of the prominent 3G mobile communication systems, provides broadcast and multicast services (BCMCS) to meet increasing demand for multimedia data services. Currently, 1/spl times/EV-DO schedules broadcast streams using a slot-based static algorithm, which fails to support dynamic environments where broadcast content is added or removed on-line. We propose a dynamic packet-scheduling algorithm that works with a retransmission scheme for the BCMCS scheduler. Integrated with earliest deadline first (EDF) real-time scheduling, the proposed algorithm not only adapts to dynamic contexts efficiently but also satisfies the real-time requirements of broadcast streams. Furthermore, by exploiting the fine granular scalable (FGS) characteristics of the MPEG-4 part 2 standard, our scheme can avoid abrupt degradation of playback quality by protecting the most important data. Extensive simulations have quantitatively validated the efficiency of our approach.

This paper presents a multimedia objects sharing framework on the basis of Internet news infrastructure (NNTP) to facilitate e-learning contentaccess and distribution. Through this framework, a Web-based e-learning system can publish sharable learning objects by posting them to a news server nearby, so that the objects can be automatically spread to world-wide news servers through NNTP forwarding mechanism. Instead of hunting for the desired materials from many different e-learning systems, users can access learning objects shared from different e-learning platforms easily, and in a unified way. Moreover, we deal with severe data redundancy problem occurring especially when the shared object contains multimedia data (e.g., instructor's speech, image, and video). A system prototype has been implemented in our university to share English lectures with others.

Usage of automated teller machines (ATMs) is confined to financial transactions in the present world scenario. multimedia usage for finance is inhibited by several factors including security and lack of flexible user interface models to proliferate the public environment usage criterion. Financial services become more attractive when the user obtains a plurality of services over existing access methodology using personalized web pages, animated and other customized mobile agents to mimic the usage patterns. We present an intelligent and novel approach to facilitate and propel financial and non-financial services for public environments that seamlessly integrate wireless multimedia applications and digital content over the financial services network. This study describes experiments on automatic detection of semantic concepts, which are textual descriptions about the digital video content. The concepts can be further used in content-based categorization and access of digital video repositories. Temporal gradient correlograms, temporal color correlograms and motion activity low-level features are extracted from the dynamic visual content of a video shot. Semantic concepts are detected with an expeditious method that is based on the selection of small positive example sets and computational low-level feature similarities between video shots. Detectors using several feature and fusion operator configurations are tested in 60-hour news video database from TRECVID 2003 benchmark. Results show that the feature fusion based on ranked lists gives better detection performance than fusion of normalized low-level feature spaces distances. Best performance was obtained by pre-validating the configurations of features and rank fusion operators. Results also show that minimum rank fusion of temporal color and structure provides comparable performance

The diversity of end-terminal and access network capabilities as well as the dynamic nature of wireless connections pose significant challenges to providers of multimedia streaming services. In this paper, we present a system based on MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) technologies that automatically adapts scalable multimedia resources, like upcoming MPEG-4 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) streams, in a generic and transparent way to the user and session context. This context includes terminal and network capabilities as well as user characteristics. A server side adaptation engine reacts to context changes by dynamic decision taking and accordingly modified bitstream adaptation. Furthermore, novel concepts are presented that facilitate multimedia adaptation in a distributed fashion along the delivery path.
