This paper presents an algorithm that efficiently retrieves audio data similar to an audio query. The proposed method utilises a feature extraction method for acoustical music sequences. The extracted features are grouped by Minimum Bounding Rectangles (MBRs) and indexed by means of a spatial access method. We also present a novel false alarm resolution method that utilises a reverse order schema while calculating the distance of the query and results, in order to avoid costly operations. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed technique achieves considerable performance improvement in comparison to an existing method.

With the fast development of technology and science, there come various changes and demands in consumer service market. The plan integrating "broadband network" with "application service" is potential and farsighted in network industry. Academic and technological institutes start researching and promoting the MOD (multimedia on demand) system, which transits multimedia information and provides users interactive interface via setop-box in broadband network. Implement cost, learning content and user behaviors might be taken into account when constructing MOD system. Besides, how to increase the MOD's capability of interaction and portability is a practical issue. Sharing and participating are of great importance for network users. This paper first proposes a digital content platform, which combines peer-to-peer (P2P) technology and sharable content object reference model (SCORM). Such a mechanism makes it possible for content providers to share versatile multimedia information with others in digital channel. Followed by a description of file sharing methods in P2P framework. Then, we advocate incremental k-nearest-neighbor (k-NN) algorithm analyzing SCORM metadata and user access records to improve system load, content feature classification efficiency, file index distribution and user query-feedback speed.

The concepts and techniques that have dominated wired multimedia communications are not well suited for dynamic wireless environments. In recent years, research focus has been to adapt existing algorithms and protocols to the rapidly varying resources of wireless networks. For instance, packetization strategies are solely designed based on application layer information. While this design provides adequate support for multimedia applications over the Internet, it results often in poor performance in crowded wireless networks, when the interference is high or when the stations are mobile. In this paper, we show that by deploying a cross-layer aware packetization strategy, which explicitly considers the deployed compression techniques and content characteristics at the application layer as well as the protection methods at the lower layers for different channel conditions, significant improvements in multimedia performance can be obtained.

access to Web applications using hand-held devices is becoming a necessity for gathering information, conducting transactions, and interacting with people, and other information systems. However, developing and deploying Web applications on mobile devices is not straightforward as it might sound. Web pages and applications for mobile environments pose certain unique requirements and challenges, compared to their desktop versions, which primarily arise from small size of the devices, limited input and interaction capabilities, slower communication, and need for tailored content depending on the dynamic context of use. Successful development and deployment of mobile Web applications calls for a better understanding of these requirements and challenges. This paper identifies and addresses these unique requirements and challenges, and presents an overview of approaches and techniques for adapting Web pages developed for desktops for deploying on mobile hand-held devices.

The beyond 3G or 4G mobile systems envisions heterogeneous infrastructures comprising diverse wireless systems, e,g., 2G, 3G, DVB, WLAN, and various transmission approaches, e.g., "one-to-one" and "one-to-many". In this context, a network selection (NS) problem emerges regarding determining the appropriate access network (AN), as users are reachable through several different ANs. This paper addresses the issue of provisioning "one-to-many" services over heterogeneous wireless networks in terms of how to choose the AN that satisfies the bandwidth requirement of services, while maximizing the system profit obtained in the combined network. A heterogeneous network comprising multicast broadcast multimedia service (MBMS) of the third generation mobile terrestrial network and the digital video broadcasting transmission system for handheld terminals (DVB-H) is adopted in this study. Both networks cooperate and complement each other to improve the resource usage and to support "one-to-many" services with their multicast and broadcast transmission capabilities. Based on this architecture, an algorithm framework is defined and proposed to solve the NS problem for the "one-to-many" services. Six schemes based on the algorithm framework are then evaluated by simulation.

The mobile Internet adds the new multi-media features and takes a convergence to the wired Internet. The emerging diversity of the content languages adds a new challenge as well as the sustained challenge from the diversity of the execution environments. The author describes the mobile Internet evolution from the browser viewpoint in the three-stage model. After describing the focus shift during this evolution, the author discusses the architecture need to leverage the combination of the multimedia processing components in multiple applications in a resource-constraint environment. This leads to the new architecture demand to cope with the diversity of the content languages as well as the resource restrictions in the embedded client environment. The author proposes a micro-component architecture to enable browsers to act as a toolkit to construct a wide range of application clients on a mobile handset with optimal footprint. A case study in SVG case is shown to evaluate the effect of the proposed micro-component architecture approach.

This paper proposes a practical content-dependent low-power DCT design with tolerable quality drop. Low-power issue has become more and more important, especially for portable devices. Unfortunately, low-power design always brings in significant quality drop at the same time. This work not only achieves ultra low power dissipation but also remains tolerable quality drop (about 0.1 dB) in most cases. The proposed architecture is based on distributed arithmetic architecture [A. Peled et. al., (1974)] and combined with more reliable PPA classification algorithm [T. Xanthopoulos et. al., (2000)]. It can accurately control bit-level calculation and avoid unnecessary calculation to save power. This characteristic is powerful and very useful in video encoder systems, since coefficients after DCT and Q become zero with high probability. This part of power can be saved without causing undesired quality drop

Integration of mobile computing devices and high-speed wireless networks into the tactical domain provides the warfighter with unprecedented access to information on the battlefield. Challenges in information delivery for these handheld computers can be solved by optimizing content through transcoding services. Employing commercial software, video and Web content can be dynamically customized to meet the unique processing, storage and network requirements for mobile devices. Transcoding can be applied to current operational systems to provide content to the mobile warfighter. A prototype transcoding platform was built to demonstrate the integration of global broadcast service (GBS) streaming video and wireless handheld devices. VLC media player was used to transcode high quality 1.6 Mbps MPEG-2 video received over GBS into low bitrate MPEG-4 for playback on wireless handhelds. This prototype used commercially available tools to optimize operational resources for mobile devices and demonstrates how GIG net-centric services can be extended to tactical edge users
