As a great many of new devices with diverse capabilities are making a population boom, their limited display sizes become the major obstacle that has undermined the usefulness of these devices for information access. In this paper, we introduce our recent research on adapting multimediacontent including images, videos and web pages for browsing on small-form-factor devices. A theoretical framework as well as a set of novel methods for presenting and rendering multimedia under limited screen sizes is proposed to improve the user experience. The content modeling and processing are provided as subscription-based web services on the Internet. Experiments show that our approach is extensible and able to achieve satisfactory results with high efficiency.

High-Speed Downlink Packet access (HSDPA) is the release 5 extension of WCDMA standard which provides high data rates (up to 10.8 Mbps) by using Adaptive Modulation/Coding (AMC) and fast packet scheduling. This paper presents a comparison of opportunistic scheduling algorithms for streaming media in HSDPA. We first present a discrete event model for HSDPA multimedia system and express stochastic QoS constraints that reflect the requirement for uninterrupted play-out. Next, we present a general structure of the opportunistic scheduling policies which exploit channel and/or buffer content variations for achieving the required QoS. By using computer simulations, we compare the performance of several special cases of the general policy in terms of the maximum number of the users that can be supported with the desired QoS constraint.

Video document retrieval is now an active part of the domain of multimedia retrieval. However, unlike for other media, the management of a collection of video documents adds the problem of efficiently handling an overwhelming volume of temporal data. Challenges include balancing efficient content modeling and storage against fast access at various levels. In this paper, we detail the framework we have built to accommodate our developments in content-based multimedia retrieval. We show that not only our framework facilitates the developments of processing and indexing algorithms but it also opens the way to several other possibilities such as rapid interface prototyping or retrieval algorithms benchmarking. In this respect, we discuss our developments in relation to wider contexts such as MPEG-7 and the TREC Video Track. Copyright 2004 ACM.

In this paper we propose a novel segmentation-based approach for delivering multimedia files in content distribution networks. Each media file is divided into segments and the number of copies distributed to replica servers for each segment is designed in such a way that we can reduce the storage requirement at the replica servers, accommodate the bursty arrival of client requests, and at the same time achieve a small latency for the clients. We analyze the effect of the size of segments on the total storage requirement and give a lower bound. We design a scheduling algorithm that can take advantage of the increased capacity of access links of clients. Our simulations show that the segmentation-based approach can reduce the latency and the rejection rate significantly over those approaches that deliver the whole or the prefix part of media files to replica servers.

This paper presents our latest work on analyzing and understanding the content of learning media such as instructional and training videos, based on the identification of video frame types. In particular, we achieve this goal by first partitioning a video sequence into homogeneous segments where each segment contains frames of the same image type such as slide or web-page;then we categorize the frames within each segment into one of the following four classes: slide, web-page, instructor and picture-in-picture, by analyzing various visual and text features. Preliminary experiments carried out on two seminar talks have yielded encouraging results. It is our belief that by classifying video frames into semantic image categories, we are able to better understand and annotate the learning media content and subsequently facilitate its contentaccess, browsing and retrieval.

Online multimedia data needs to be encrypted for access control. To be capable of working on mobile devices such as pocket PC and mobile phones, lightweight video encryption algorithms should be proposed. The two major problems in these algorithms are that they are either not fast enough or unable to work on highly compressed data stream. In this paper, we proposed a new lightweight encryption algorithm based on Huffman error diffusion. It is a selective algorithm working on compressed data. By carefully choosing the most significant parts (MSP), high performance is achieved with proper security. Nowadays, access to information requires to manage effectively multimedia databases, and among challenges offered to scientific community since last decades, multimedia retrieval techniques (particularly images retrieval) are became an active research direction. Introduced to overcome the main drawbacks encountered by text-based images retrieval, which are the subjective and manual annotation of images, content based images retrieval (CBIR) systems index images according to low-level visual features such as color, texture, shape to retrieve similar images. However, despite the progress achieved in the content based image retrieval, in particular with the relevance feedback approach where the user refine the search via the specification of relevant or not relevant items, the current CBIR systems still have a major difficulty that it has yet to overcome: how to negotiate the "semantic gap"? This problem comes from the mismatch between their capabilities and the needs of users. In this paper, we address the problem of how relate low-level features to high level to bring out semantic concepts from images. Our aim is to combine content-based and metadata-based approaches for image retrieval from a user perspective to yield better results and overcome to the lacks of these techniques when they are taken separately. To represent the semantic content of images, we propose a model which takes account of the interaction between the user and the metadata. In particular, we model the semantic user' preference by analyzing its answers through the Relevance Feedback process. Furthermore, we introduce a new machine learning technique that modify the weights (i.e. relative importance) of metadata representing the semantic content of images.

One of the challenges of multimedia applications is to provide user-tailored access to information encoded in different media. Particularly, previous research has not yet fully explored how to automatically compose different video segments according to a communicative goal. We propose a rhetoric-based method to support the selection and automatic editing of user-requested content from video footage. The method is applied to the domain of video documentaries to create biased sequences about a user selected subject.
