Semantic understanding of multimediacontent is critical in enabling effective access to all forms of digital media data. By making large media repositories searchable, semantic content descriptions greatly enhance the value of such data. Automatic semantic understanding is a very challenging problem and most media databases resort to describing content in terms of low-level features or using manually ascribed annotations. Recent techniques focus on detecting semantic concepts in video, such as indoor, outdoor, face, people, nature, etc. This approach works for a fixed lexicon for which annotated training examples exist. In this paper we consider the problem of using such semantic concept detection to map the video clips into semantic spaces. This is done by constructing a model vector that acts as a compact semantic representation of the underlying content. We then present experiments in the semantic spaces leveraging such information for enhanced semantic retrieval, classification, visualization, and data mining purposes. We evaluate these ideas using a large video corpus and demonstrate significant performance gains in retrieval effectiveness.

Dialog systems that adapt to different user needs and preferences appropriately have been shown to achieve higher levels of user satisfaction. However, it is also important that dialog systems be able to adapt to the users computing environment, because people are able to access computer systems using different kinds of devices such as desktop computers, personal digital assistants, and cellular telephones. Each of these devices has a distinct set of physical capabilities, as well as a distinct set of functions for which it is typically used. Existing research on adaptation in both hypermedia and dialog systems has focused on how to customize content based on user models and interaction history. Some researchers have also investigated device-centered adaptations that range from low-level adaptations such as conversion of multimedia objects (e.g., video to images, audio to text, image size reduction) to higher-level adaptations based on multimedia document models and frameworks for combining output modalities. However, to my knowledge, no work has been done on integrating and coordinating both types of adaptation interdependently. The primary problem I would like to address in this thesis is how multimodal dialog systems can adapt their content and style of interaction, taking the user, the device, and the dependency between them into account. Two main aspects of adaptability that my thesis considers are: (1) adaptability in content presentation and communication and (2) adaptability in computational strategies used to achieve systems and users goals. Beside general user modeling questions such as how to acquire information about the user and construct a user model, this thesis also considers other issues that deal with device modeling such as (1) how can the system employ user and device models to adapt the content and determine the right combination of modalities effectively? (2) how can the system determine the right combination of multimodal contents that best su

In future wireless networks, the packet scheduler needs to support heterogeneous classes of traffic with different BER and other QoS requirements. In this paper, we proposed a modified BER scheduling scheme for CDMA networks by combining the existing WISPER scheme with a two-state Markov chain channel model. Four error-deal algorithms are used in this scheme. Simulation experiments based on NS-2 illustrate that the modified scheme can achieve both lower packet loss ratio and lower packet delay compared to the original WISPER scheme.

In ubiquitous environment for multimedia service, contents adaptation is required in DRM system. However, contents adaptation would distort the watermark signal, which is used for contents protection in DRM system. In this paper, we propose a watermarking system in ubiquitous DRM system. We defined watermarking workflow in DRM system based on the IMPRIMATUR model. And we propose watermark validation metadata to survive watermark under content adaptation. In experiments, we performed widely used watermark algorithms to verify that the proposed watermarking system is useful.

This paper describes the development, implementation, and functionality of an interactive multimedia, online eBook designed to enhance the learning experience of students studying basic concepts in engineering thermodynamics. The eBook is case-based and covers the same material addressed in a typical engineering thermodynamics textbook. It is comprised of 42 case problems. Each case covers a specific concept in engineering thermodynamics and is presented in four parts: Case Introduction, Theory, Case Solution, and Simulation. The first three parts introduce a case to students, present required concepts to solve the case problem, and apply the concepts to solve the case problem. Graphics, diagrams, animations, sounds, and hypertext are used to present these materials in a rich interactive and dynamic method. The fourth part provides an opportunity for students to experience a simulation by modifying parameters of the case problem. The eBook is published through the Internet at *** and any instructor or engineering student can access the material without cost or conditions. The content can be used as a stand-alone tool for distance learning, a supplementary material for traditional classes, or a just-in-time learning tool for those who want to review a specific topic in engineering thermodynamics.
