Recently surveillance and Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) applications are increasing as the cost of computing power needed to process the massive amount of information continues to fall. This computing power has been made possible partly by the latest advances in FPGAs and SOPCs. In particular, to design and implement state-of-the-Art electro-optical imaging systems to provide advanced surveillance capabilities, there is a need to integrate several technologies (e.g. telescope, precise optics, cameras, image/compute vision algorithms, which can be geographically distributed or sharing distributed resources) into a programmable system and DSP systems. Additionally, pattern recognition techniques and fast information retrieval, are often important components of intelligent systems. The aim of this work is using embedded FPGA as a fast, configurable and synthesizable search engine in fast image pattern recognition/retrieval in a distributed hardware/software co-design environment. In particular, we propose and show a low cost content Addressable Memory (CAM)-based distributed embedded FPGA hardware architecture solution with real time recognition capabilities and computing for pattern look-up, pattern recognition, and image retrieval. We show how the distributed CAM-based architecture offers a performance advantage of an order-of-magnitude over RAM-based architecture (Random access Memory) search for implementing high speed pattern recognition for image retrieval. The methods of designing implementing, and analyzing the proposed CAM based embedded architecture are described here. Other SOPC solutions/design issues are covered. Finally, experimental results, hardware verification, and performance evaluations using both the Xilinx Virtex-II and the Altera Apex20k are provided to show the potential and power of the proposed method for low cost reconfigurable fast image pattern recognition/retrieval at the hardware/software co-design level.

The explosive growth of the Internet and the Web services technology provides the underpinnings to multimedia web services. However, due to the rich media types in multimedia content and the diversity and heterogeneity in terms of the types of client devices and network connections as well as the special needs and preferences that end users might have, it is very difficult and expensive to provide interface separately for each individual user. Therefore, technologies that can enable universal access the services through an adaptive interface would become critical in the coming pervasive computing era. Further more, customers' requirements and business rules change more often, the need for adaptability in the service level is becoming manifest. In this work, an agent-based adaptive interface is proposed for multimedia Web services. The rapid expansion of personal digital multimedia content in recent years requires a systematic indexing, categorizing and browsing interface to manage these enormous data. To tackle this crucial problem, the MPEG-7 standard was initiated with the intention to allow for efficient searching, indexing, filtering and accessing of multimedia content. We propose a MPEG-7 based multimedia content description tool which annotates multimedia data with twelve main attributes regarding its semantic representation. The twelve attributes include answers of who, what, when, where, why and how (5W1H) the digital content was produced as well as the respective direction, distance and duration (3D) information. We define digital multimedia contents including image, video and music embedded with the proposed semantic attributes as dozen dimensional digital content (DDDC). The establishment of DDDC would provide an interoperatable methodology for multimedia content management applications at semantic level. We also envision novel algorithms associate with DDDC attributes for semantic based content retrieval in the future.

We propose an efficient caching mechanism for XML content adaptation. Our adaptation framework consists of two modules. One module generates transformation rules and the other transforms source XML contents using the transformation rules. Unlike conventional caching mechanisms that store transformed contents, our mechanism stores the transformation rules between two modules. We show its performance improvement in terms of measured hit ratio and space efficiency in a comparison with conventional mechanisms.

This document describes a universal multimedia access system and its implementation details. In the context of this document, universal multimedia access means accessing multimedia content over ubiquitous computer networks, using different computing platforms. The computer networks involve both wired and wireless networks, and computing platforms involve wired PC, mobile PC and personal digital assistants (PDA). The system is built on a client/server architecture. Video data is H.263 coded and carried over RTP. The Java Media Framework is utilized and its capabilities are extended with special plug-ins when necessary.

In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information, which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable.

Future wireless systems will support a variety of different services such as voice, data and video, with variable bit rate requirements. In this paper, we consider a multimedia code division multiple access (CDMA) system for which different rates are represented by varying the processing gain, and study the dynamic properties of distributed power control algorithms using the theory of stability for switched systems and M-matrices. Of particular interest is the stability issue under fluctuations in the desired rates for individual users. We demonstrate that the convergence of a distributed power algorithm can be jeopardized for some cases. Furthermore, we provide conditions to check for possible instabilities and study the degradation in system capacity when such instabilities need to be avoided.

Video staging has been proposed as a mechanism for video streaming proxy servers to better exploit the temporal locality of requests made by clients. It divides a video stream into two parts, i.e. local storage and remote access. It opens a new possibility of scheduling in the video streaming proxy server, with the introduction of disk scheduling on top of network scheduling. However, a simple division cannot put all these resources into good use. We devise a novel video staging algorithm. It considers memory consumption, network bandwidth and disk access requirements so that these resources usage can be optimized accordingly.

There exist many scenarios in which the automatic distinction between human and machines is desirable. This paper describes a texture-image based approach to encode text information in such a way that machine vision algorithms will experience difficulties while humans can extract the embedded text effortlessly. We exploit both static and dynamic visual patterns to diversify the image content and discourage automatic processing. Examples of the resulting patterns are presented and their properties are discussed

Compared to the regular documents, the major distinguishing characteristics of the Web documents are the dynamic hyper-structure. Thus, in addition to terms or keywords for regular document clustering, Web document clustering can incorporate some dynamic information such as the hyperlinks and the access patterns extracted from the user query logs. In this paper, we extend the concept of document clustering into Web document clustering by introducing the strategy of affinity-based similarity measure, which utilizes the user access patterns in determining the similarities among Web documents via a probabilistic model. Several comparison experiments are conducted using a real data set and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed similarity measure outperforms the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under different document clustering algorithms.
