Relevance feedback has been a very useful tool to enhance the performance of content-based information retrieval (CBIR) systems. To fully make use of the precious user feedback provided to a system, we propose an approach named semantic propagation, which reveals the deep semantic relationships among objects in the database, given a set of relevance feedbacks between object pairs. In particular, we present two semantic propagation algorithms that are applicable to CIBR systems with a feature vector space model and a general metric space model, respectively. Experiments on a 3D model retrieval system and a logo image retrieval system are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Summary from only given. We present an image library with similarity-based searching and novel browsing structures and a news video library with content-based search and summarisation features. Our approach puts the traditional library search via textual meta-data upside down by allowing access to collections through browsing and search of images that may come as part of a multimedia document. We have developed two systems, which address the need for nontextual search facilities in multimedia collections. The first is an integrated system for building and providing access to a broad range of image collections such as engineering sketches, wild-life photographs or private photo collections. The second system called ANSES (Automatic News Summarization Extraction System) is explicitly targeting multimedia information pertaining to video broadcasts. ANSES captures television news each day along with the associated subtitles.

Nowadays, access to information requires to manage effectively multimedia databases, and among challenges offered to scientific community since last decades, multimedia retrieval techniques (particularly images retrieval) are became an active research direction. Introduced to overcome the main drawbacks encountered by text-based images retrieval, which are the subjective and manual annotation of images, content based images retrieval (CBIR) systems index images according to low-level visual features such as color, texture, shape to retrieve similar images. However, despite the progress achieved in the content based image retrieval, in particular with the relevance feedback approach where the user refine the search via the specification of relevant or not relevant items, the current CBIR systems still have a major difficulty that it has yet to overcome: how to negotiate the "semantic gap"? This problem comes from the mismatch between their capabilities and the needs of users. In this paper, we address the problem of how relate lowlevel features to high level to bring out semantic concepts from images. Our aim is to combine contentbased and metadata-based approaches for image retrieval from a user perspective to yield better results and overcome to the lacks of these techniques when they are taken separately. To represent the semantic content of images, we propose a model which takes account of the interaction between the user and the metadata. In particular, we model the semantic user' preference by analyzing its answers through the Relevance Feedback process. Furthermore, we introduce a new machine learning technique that modify the weights (i.e. relative importance) of metadata representing the semantic content of images.

In future wireless networks, the packet scheduler needs to support heterogeneous classes of traffic with different BER and other QoS requirements. In this paper, we proposed a modified BER scheduling scheme for CDMA networks by combining the existing WISPER scheme with a two-state Markov chain channel model. Four error-deal algorithms are used in this scheme. Simulation experiments based on NS-2 illustrate that the modified scheme can achieve both lower packet loss ratio and lower packet delay compared to the original WISPER scheme

An optimal resource allocation scheme is proposed. It uses a genetic algorithm (GA) in conjunction with the recently developed plane cover multiple access (PCMA) scheme in order to maximize the attainable capacity of packet-based wireless cellular networks. The powerful search capability of GA is a key factor in improving the performance of cellular resource allocation, and computer simulation results suggest that the proposed approach outperforms the 'uniform' and the 'greedy' algorithm based 'min' methods.

To provide data rates of the order of hundreds of Mbps and multimedia services, standardization efforts for next generation (4G) systems are focusing on target technologies and seamless connectivity through various types of networks, including wireline networks and WLANs. Different types of multiple access techniques, such as the ones based on multicarrier CDMA and OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) have been proposed. There is a need for functional integration of the multiple networks, and, with the evolution of IPv6 and QoS support for IP networks, an IP based interconnectivity is best suited. A QoS aware adaptive radio resource management technique based on multi-code multicarrier CDMA is discussed. We develop a novel radio access method and develop algorithms for allocating and controlling radio network resources so that system performance can be maximized and guaranteed QoS for multimedia services can be provided within the DiffServ environment.

Automatic annotation of semantic events allows effective retrieval of video content. We present automatic annotation of sports highlights for some of the principal sports types. They are obtained by detecting and tracking a limited number of visual cues common to each sport. Highlights are represented as atomic entities at the semantic level. They have a limited temporal extension and can be modeled as the spatio-temporal concatenation of specific events. Visual cues encode position and speed information coming from the camera and from the objects/athletes that are present in the scene, and are estimated automatically from the video stream. algorithms for model checking and for visual cue estimation are discussed. as well as applications of the representation to different sports domains

We present a Web-based authoring tool to create interactive multimedia contents for English learning. Target users of this authoring tool are English teachers and content designer, therefore, ease of use and simplicity are the fundamental issues. Furthermore, the authoring tool and multimedia database are integrated in the context of intelligent Web-based interactive language learning (IWiLL) system. Special language tools to access corpus, manipulate multimedia elements, and create collaborative learning sessions are designed in the system. These resources and tools on hand yield the potential to create rich and deep interactive multimedia contents.

multimedia technology is being developed in light-speed velocity. The number of different players in the multimedia value and delivery chain is constantly increasing. New multimedia services and applications are emerging daily and furthermore, they are evolving constantly. However, the speed of the development, mass of information, numerous information providers and consumers, pose a great threat to the development of multimedia technology. This can be abridged by an adherence to the open standards, such as MPEG-21 multimedia framework. MPEG-21 is trying to set up an abstract model, which could unambiguously describe the multimedia content, allow seamless access and delivery of the content including the intellectual property management and protection mechanisms. Even more, the abstract model being developed is designed to allow future technologies to be implemented within. MPEG-21 promises to solve several issues within the domain of multimedia content distribution. Nevertheless this remains to be proven through implementation and wide acceptance. Consequently, the MUFFINS (multimedia framework for interoperability in secure environments) project has started to closely follow and monitor the development of the MPEG-21 standard, also implemented in an MPEG-21 real-life scenario. The goal of this study is to prove the MPEG-21 concept and to show its impact on the multimedia technology development as well as to monitor and contribute to the development of MPEG-21 standard. In this article, the basic concepts of the MPEG-21 standard and the MUFFINS project are presented.

Many rate control algorithms focus on the adjustment of quantisation values to retain a certain buffer level, and arbitrary frame-skipping is often needed to keep the buffer from overflow at very low bit-rates. A content adaptive rate control is proposed to optimise the balance between spatial and temporal quality via active frame-skipping. The occurrence of frame-skipping is jointly dependent on the temporal and spatial quality of the video, and on the fullness of the buffer. This helps to achieve a consistent spatial and temporal quality and to enhance the overall perceptual quality. Experimental results show that the new scheme is simple but very effective, with large average PSNR gains and consistently improved visual quality, and the improvement in perceptual quality is much more significant than that in average PSNRs.
