In this paper we propose a novel segmentation-based approach for delivering multimedia files in content distribution networks. Each media file is divided into segments and the number of copies distributed to replica servers for each segment is designed in such a way that we can reduce the storage requirement at the replica servers, accommodate the bursty arrival of client requests, and at the same time achieve a small latency for the clients. We analyze the effect of the size of segments on the total storage requirement and give a lower bound. We design a scheduling algorithm that can take advantage of the increased capacity of access links of clients. Our simulations show that the segmentation-based approach can reduce the latency and the rejection rate significantly over those approaches that deliver the whole or the prefix part of media files to replica servers.

The research described in this paper is the investigation of interactivity between learners and system in the context of remote access to educational field explorations (field trips). The concept is described generically as remote access field trip (RAFT). The interactivity framework proposed for assessing RAFT considers it within the context of live distance education and needs to be judged in terms of set interaction criteria, e.g. learner & learner, learner & instructor, learner & content and learner & interface. This paper proposes that criteria for distance learning interaction assessment should consider also how the leaner interacts with a pervasive interface. This is particularly relevant in this context because the system involves participants interacting with a pervasive system within a live field trip experience, and creates a unique human-system interaction in the educational domain.

The Teleweb project aims to provide a friendly online access to large multimedia databases which constitute a "media space". This work presents the design of an ergonomic interface joining the own interactor's visual computing skills to the soft computing capability of fuzzy logic to model the proximity relationship of the media. Tiles mapped into a 3D topological representation. While the cybernetics of semantics is given by an automated representation of the data, the interactor is engaged in an immersive environment created dynamically from his requests controlling his own navigation in the media space.

We develop an algorithm for chord decision for monophonic music, and it can be applied to music indexing and automatic composition systems. The basic ideas of the proposed algorithm can be divided into two phases: the local recognition phase and the global decision phase. The algorithm analyzes the music and assigns a set of chord candidates in the local recognition phase, while deciding the best appropriate chord according to the chord progression rules in the global decision phase. MITv is a proposition for interactive television to be deployed using an association of current distribution television systems (e.g., satellite DVB-S, cable DVB-T, TV over xDSL, etc.) and classical Internet infrastructure. MITv makes use of the natural association between broadcasted TV programs and associated interactive contents to manage replication of those contents over an ad-hoc infrastructure. The replication phase can be based on IP multicast over satellite service, providing a high performance and realistic way to convey the interactive content over the geographically distributed replication units. The proximity between replication units and end-users then allow a very high quality for interactive media presentation by way of an access network such as xDSL. The MITv system was entirely developed and tested in real conditions through a satellite/xDSL network emulator.

This paper proposes a novel system that can automatically create an optimal and nonrepetitive summarization and support different user requirements for video browsing and content overview by outputting both the optimal set of key frames and a summarized version of the original video with the user-specified time length. Comparing our approach to video abstraction with another algorithm, we demonstrate that our approach is fast and produces an effective video summary.

High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is included in release 5 of the WCDMA specifications to increase downlink capacity and bitrates. This paper considers performance aspects of streaming applications over HSDPA in a mixed streaming and best-effort service scenario. Different scheduling algorithms are evaluated with the aim of providing sufficient quality-of-service for streaming. The simulation results show that reasonable streaming performance can be achieved without service differentiation if a somewhat fair scheduler is used, and that a streaming-aware scheduler further can protect streaming quality-of-service in high load conditions.

In the algorithms found in the literature for finding the optimum point of operation MPPT ( maximum power point tracking), of photovoltaic (PV) modules, the initial reference value is fixed arbitrarily and without constraints. This reduces the performance of research into the optimal operation point of PV systems. In order to improve this performance, a MPPT method based on a nonlinear approach is proposed for estimation of the initial value of the reference. The combination of this approach with the perturbation and observation (P and O) method has enabled progress to be made in the search for the optimal operation point of the PV system.
