This paper describes the results of our efforts with regard to the design and implementation of an educational digital video library using MPEG-4 and the synchronized multimedia integration language (SMIL). The aim of our work is to integrate MPEG-4 encoding, full text indexing, high-resolution streaming, and SMIL, not only for delivering on-line digital video, but also for enabling semantical search for particular segments of a video clip in a repository of educational digital videos. One of the main purposes of our system is to provide new functionalities and solutions, which are not offered in conventional video libraries without online distribution facilities. Our system allows teachers, students and other users in 145 schools in our region, quick and easy access to film and video clips via the Internet. They are able to encode, store, and retrieve catalogued streaming digital video content to be used in educational settings.

In the mobile communication world, the 2nd Generation Era was the years when new values were created by the fusion of “mobile” and “the Internet.” In the 3d Generation Era, multimedia contents and applications became available to the mobile environment. And we are now witnessing the era of mobile multimedia unfolds before our eyes. After this, the “Ubiquitous” will arrive. Various objects will come to support communication capabilities. The next generation Era will be the years of the “Mobile ubiquitous,” in which the mobile environment and the ubiquitous environment will collaborate and coordinate with each other to create new values. I will talk about the system evolution scenario and about new and extended direction of research. The next generation radio access system will be.a packet base broadband system and will support various environments such as cellular, spot areas and indoor offices. Radio parameters will be adaptively controlled, to realize optimized systems for each different environment. Three major components of the ”mobile ubiquitous” world are: ubiquitous network terminal or gateway device and mobile network. The ubiquitous network needs the function to re-configure itself dynamically. In the gateway device arena, aggregation functions for collecting real-world information from the ubiquitous network, and a conductor-like function for coordination with the ubiquitous network are required. In the area of mobile networks, research topics include the handling of real-world information collected through ubiquitous networks and reflecting that in dynamic service provisioning. Together with research to enhance the radio access and the network, our goal is to achieve substantial results that will he a foundation for a truly valuable mobile ubiquitous system for the individual and for the society.

This article presents an overview of radio resource management schemes for supporting of multimedia applications in IP CDMA-based systems considering soft handoff (SHO). A collection of radio resource management (RRM) algorithms guarantees the stability of the radio path and the QoS of radio connection by efficient sharing and managing of the radio resources. Differentiated allocation of resources through power control, prioritized access to medium through packet scheduling and admission control (CAC) and performance guarantees during soft handoff are discussed related with mobility characteristics and traffic patterns associated to the new services. The paper focuses in the uplink. Although soft handoff has been shown to increase the uplink system capacity it requires a more complex control of mobile station (MS) transmissions in the packet level. Given that more than one base station (BS or node B) control the cells where MSs are presented, several alternatives could be considered as to the location of the scheduling entity that controls the MS transmissions. This paper presents a system performance evaluation when more than one cell could be considered as valid scheduling entities. In this case, it has been required the implementation of a decision procedure in the MS when it receives scheduling assignments from multiple BSs. On the other hand, performance of CAC strategies in soft handoff is evaluated and compared with hard handoff considering adaptive reservation CAC schemes in order to prevent forced termination of handoff calls. Comparison is performed considering both homogeneous and heterogeneous load distributions in cells.

The notion of ontology is introduced to information retrieval systems and an ontology-based architecture for an intelligent information retrieval system is presented. A hierarchical tree-model of a local domain ontological repository of a CAPP application system is constructed, in which DAML+OIL (DARPA agent markup language and ontology interchange language) is used to annotate in detail the syntax and semantics of concepts, their attributes and relations among concepts. Pretreatment of the local domain ontological repository and the automatic acquirement of remote information on the Internet are implemented by an information semantics-based intelligent clustering algorithm and inference rules in the architecture; the preference databases of users are managed logically according to their retrieval interests. Consequently, the system meets the requirement of intelligent information search, and further improves the efficiency and precision of information retrieval.

The paper summarizes recent work underway at LIMSI on speech-to-text transcription in multiple languages. The research has been oriented towards the processing of broadcast audio and conversational speech for information access. Broadcast news transcription systems have been developed for seven languages, and it is planned to address several other languages in the near term. Research on conversational speech has mainly focused on the English language, with some initial work on French, Arabic and Spanish. Automatic processing must take into account the characteristics of the audio data, such as needing to deal with the continuous data stream, specificities of the language and the use of an imperfect word transcription for accessing the information content. Our experience thus far indicates that at today's word error rates, the techniques used in one language can be successfully ported to other languages, and most of the language specificities concern lexical and pronunciation modeling.

In data mining, to access a large amount of data sets for the purpose of predictive data does not guarantee a good method. Even, the size of real data is unlimited in mobile commerce. Hereupon, in addition to searching expected products for users, it becomes necessary to develop a recommendation service based on XML technology. In this paper, we design the optimized XML recommended products data. Efficient XML data preprocessing is required in include of formatting, structural, attribute of representation with dependent on user profile information. Our goal is to find a relationship among user interested products and e-commerce from m-commerce to XDB. First, analyzing user profiles information. In the result creating clusters with user profile analyzed such as with set of sex, age, job. Second, it is clustering XML data, which are associative objects, classified from user profile in shopping mall. Third, after composing categories and products in which associative products exist from the first clustering, it represent categories and products in shopping mall and optimized clustering XML data which are personalized products. The proposed personalizing user profile clustering method is designed and simulated to demonstrate the efficiency of the system

multimedia data security is very important for multimedia commerce on the Internet such as video-on-demand and real-time video multicast. Traditional cryptographic algorithms/systems for data security are often not fast enough to process the vast amount of data generated by the multimedia applications to meet the real-time constraints. This paper presents a joint encryption and compression framework in which video data are scrambled efficiently in the frequency domain by employing selective bit scrambling, block shuffling and block rotation of the transform coefficients and motion vectors. The new approach is very simple to implement, yet provides considerable levels of security and different levels of transparency, and has very limited adverse impact on the compression efficiency and no adverse impact on error resiliency. Furthermore, it allows transcodability/scalability, and some other content processing functionalities without having to access the cryptographic key and to perform decryption and re-encryption.

Interoperability between systems for secure delivery of content (audio and video) over the Internet or via digital television broadcasting is still hampered by the lack of interoperability among proprietary content protection systems. The OPIMA (Open Platform Initiative for multimedia access) specification offers a generic solution for multimedia terminals, in which the end-user's terminal is adapted to a content protection system by downloading a corresponding plug-in. This paper describes the OPIMA solution and shows how it can be applied.

Wireless environments present many challenges for secure multimedia access, especial streaming media. The availability of varying network bandwidths and diverse receiver device processing powers and storage spaces demand scalable and flexible approaches that are capable of adapting to changing network conditions as well as device capabilities. To meet these requirements, scalable and fine granularity scalable (FGS) compression algorithms were proposed and widely adopted to provide scalable access of multimedia with interoperability between different services and flexible support to receivers with different device capabilities. Encryption is one of the most important security tools to protect content from unauthorized use. If a medium data stream is encrypted using non-scalable cryptography algorithms, decryption at arbitrary bit rate to provide scalable services can hardly be accomplished. If a medium compressed using scalable coding needs to be protected and non-scalable cryptography algorithms are used, the advantages of scalable coding may be lost. Therefore scalable encryption techniques are needed to provide scalability or to preserve the FGS adaptation capability (if the media stream is FGS coded) and enable intermediate processing of encrypted data without unnecessary decryption. In this paper, we will give an overview of scalable encryption schemes and present fine grained scalable encryption algorithm. One desirable feature for FGS compatible encryption schemes is to provide simplicity and flexibility in supporting scalable multimedia communication and multimedia content access control in wireless environments.
