The distribution of multimedia files brings new challenges to the problem of replica placement in content distribution networks (CDN) and invalidates several assumptions underlying the existing solutions. In this paper we formulate a new model for the problem of replica placement to accommodate these new characteristics. We perform a theoretical analysis of the cost of distributing multimedia files over CDNs and find out that, contrary to the intuition, deploying as many replicas as possible is not always a good strategy. We then propose several replica placement algorithms that can determine the optimal number of replicas we should select from a given set of potential sites. By simulation we demonstrate that the performance of clients may degrade if we choose too many sites for replica placement.

Fast Internet access technology (ADSL and VDSL) and the coming 3G mobile communication system of high data bandwidth capacity highly facilitate multimedia traffic demands by people. However, there are comparatively little technological advancements in the storage system, the essential part of VoD system. Disk array seems to be the most cost effective choice when I/O Bandwidths, disk space cost and scalability are all considered. The central question is how to offer more concurrent accesses to the videos(especially the popular ones) with the QoS requirements satisfied. In this paper, two replication algorithms are developed and evaluated. The system is modeled and evaluated by a SIMSCRIPT II simulation program. The results illustrate that the two algorithms successfully manage disk resources to support more concurrent video stream.

Due to the proliferation of technologies to capture, store and present it, we live in a world dominated by multimedia data. However, information access mechanisms to this data by and large are rather primitive. This is especially the case for audio data that presents specific research challenges. One particularly difficult challenge is that of audio source separation. The authors are in the process of developing a perceptually based system to perform audio source separation. This paper presents the results of extensive testing of the most promising candidate algorithms.

multimedia search engines facilitate the retrieval of documents from large media content archives now available via intranets and the Internet. Over the past several years, many research projects have focused on algorithms for analyzing and indexing media content efficiently. However, special system architectures are required to process large amounts of content from real-time feeds or existing archives. Possible solutions include dedicated distributed architectures for analyzing content rapidly and for making it searchable. The system architecture we propose implements such an approach: a highly distributed and reconfigurable batch media content analyzer that can process media streams and static media repositories. Our distributed media analysis application handles media acquisition, content processing, and document indexing. This collection of modules is orchestrated by a task flow management component, exploiting data and pipeline parallelism in the application. A scheduler manages load balancing and prioritizes the different tasks. Workers implement application-specific modules that can be deployed on an arbitrary number of nodes running different operating systems. Each application module is exposed as a web service, implemented with industry-standard interoperable middleware components such as Microsoft *** and Sun J2EE. Our system architecture is the next generation system for the multimedia indexing application demonstrated by ***. It can process large volumes of audio recordings with minimal support and maintenance, while running on low-cost commodity hardware. The system has been evaluated on a server farm running concurrent content analysis processes.

Protection of intellectual property is a critical issue in digital multimedia distribution systems. Cryptographic tools are commonly used for secure delivery of content and access keys to consumers via terrestrial, satellite, cable and Internet transmissions. A third requirement is the distribution of the copyright or usage rights associated with the digital content The integrity, as opposed to security, of this data is essential to prevent unauthorized modification. Two approaches have been proposed in the open literature: allocating special fields in the transport stream and embedding a watermark into multimediacontent. We present two new methods, based on secret sharing, to create channels with guaranteed data integrity.

Interactive media aims to provide seamless access to digital content in a pro-active and user centred manner. Regardless of the nature of the delivery channel, homogeneous or heterogeneous, and regardless of the user platform, media should be accessible efficiently and at optimum quality over the full available bandwidths and independently of terminal capabilities. In this paper, we argue that the development of efficient applications underpinning interactive media systems need to be based on successive approximations of content and metadata. The presented discussion relates to the content engineering side of media applications and describes how it can be used to easy, if not to achieve, the overall goal of a new generation of media applications. Three examples combining available technologies and ongoing developments to produce successive approximations of content and metadata are presented. Their application in the development of interactive multimediasystems is discussed and results of computer experiments aiming to demonstrate the suitability of these techniques are reported.

The installation of robotic streaming video cameras in hundreds of locations around the world was observed. The cameras consists of pan, tilt, and zoom controls which is commercially available. The camera parameters can be adjusted by the remote viewers by using the internet to observe the desired details in the scene. A new approach, Co-opticon was developed that eliminates the queue and allows many users to access and share control of the robotic camera simultaneously.

Real-time content-based access to live video data requires content analysis applications that are able to process the video data at least as fast as the video data is made available to the application and with an acceptable error rate. Statements as this express quality of service (QoS) requirements to the application. In order to provide some level of control of the QoS provided, the video content analysis application must be scalable and resource aware so that requirements of timeliness and accuracy can be met by allocating additional processing resources. In this paper we present a general architecture of video content analysis applications including a model for specifying requirements of timeliness and accuracy. The salient features of the architecture include its combination of probabilistic knowledge-based media content analysis with QoS and distributed resource management to handle QoS requirements, and its independent scalability at multiple logical levels of distribution. We also present experimental results with an algorithm for QoS-aware selection of configurations of feature extractor and classification algorithms that can be used to balance requirements of timeliness and accuracy against available processing resources. Experiments with an implementation of a real-time motion vector based object-tracking application, demonstrate the scalability of the architecture.

This thesis discusses various aspects of digital image retrieval and management. First, we discuss user interface and visualization for digital image management. Two innovative systems are proposed. 3D MARS is immersive 3D display for image visualization and search systems. The user browses and searches images in 3D virtual reality environment. ImageGrouper is another graphical user interface for digital image search and organization. New concept, Object-Oriented User Interaction is introduced. The system improves image retrieval and eases text annotation and organization of digital images. Unlike the traditional user interfaces for image retrieval, ImageGrouper allows the user to group query example images. To take advantage of this feature, a new algorithm for relevance feedback is proposed. Next, this thesis discusses data structures and algorithms for high-dimensional data access. This is an essential component of multimedia data retrieval. The results of preliminary experiments are presented.

This paper describes the experiences of developing a SMIL player targeted to digital television and studies its benefits. In addition to user interface issues, interaction methods to accessmultimediacontent, such as the use of an interaction channel, were considered. To test the proposed solution, the player was transmitted through a broadcast system, called Otadigi. Using SMIL, a great variety of light applications, such as specific multimedia presentations enriching television video content, can be easily developed and updated. Finally, the support of SMIL in digital television supposes a step towards the real convergence of the Internet and broadcast.
