This paper describes the experiences of developing a SMIL player targeted to digital television and studies its benefits. In addition to user interface issues, interaction methods to accessmultimediacontent, such as the use of an interaction channel, were considered. To test the proposed solution, the player was transmitted through a broadcast system, called Otadigi. Using SMIL, a great variety of light applications, such as specific multimedia presentations enriching television video content, can be easily developed and updated. Finally, the support of SMIL in digital television supposes a step towards the real convergence of the Internet and broadcast.

This thesis discusses various aspects of digital image retrieval and management. First, we discuss user interface and visualization for digital image management. Two innovative systems are proposed. 3D MARS is immersive 3D display for image visualization and search systems. The user browses and searches images in 3D virtual reality environment. ImageGrouper is another graphical user interface for digital image search and organization. New concept, Object-Oriented User Interaction is introduced. The system improves image retrieval and eases text annotation and organization of digital images. Unlike the traditional user interfaces for image retrieval, ImageGrouper allows the user to group query example images. To take advantage of this feature, a new algorithm for relevance feedback is proposed. Next, this thesis discusses data structures and algorithms for high-dimensional data access. This is an essential component of multimedia data retrieval. The results of preliminary experiments are presented.

The design and implementation of Harbin Institute of Technology-Digital Music Library (HIT-DML) is presented in this paper. HIT-DML adopts a novel framework which is inherently based on database systems. In this framework, musical data is structurally stored in the database, some algorithms of musical computation are implemented as algebraic mirco-operations in the database management system, and thus database technologies and multimedia technologies are combined seamlessly. A musical feature-matching algorithm and the appropriate dynamic index are also applied in HIT-DML. HIT-DML can retrieve musical information based on content, especially against different kinds of musical instruments.

We present similarity-based methods to cluster digital photos by time and image content. The approach is general, unsupervised, and makes minimal assumptions regarding the structure or statistics of the photo collection. We present results for the algorithm based solely on temporal similarity, and jointly on temporal and content-based similarity. We also describe a supervised algorithm based on learning vector quantization. Finally, we include experimental results for the proposed algorithms and several competing approaches on two test collections.

The HiBRID-SoC integrates three fully programmable processor cores, each optimized towards a particular class of algorithms: the HiPAR-DSP for DSP oriented functions, the Macroblock Processor for block oriented algorithms, and the Stream Processor for bitstream processing. Dedicated interface units for SDRAM, serial Flash, and host system access are connected via a 64-bit AMBA AHB system bus with the processor cores. Dual-port memories between the processor cores facilitate fast data and control information exchange between the cores. The HiBRID-SoC is fabricated in a 0.18 mum 6LM standard-cell technology, occupies about 82 mm(2), and operates at 160 MHz.

This paper describes the ARMS system which enables secure and adaptive rich media streaming to a large-scale, heterogeneous client population. The secure streaming algorithms ensure end-to-end security while the content is adapted and streamed via intermediate, potentially untrusted servers. ARMS streaming is completely standards compliant and to our knowledge is the first such end-to-end MPEG-4-based system.

In recent years, several new architectures have been developed for supporting multimedia applications such as video/audio providers, and these applications often have stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, QoS is an important element that is still missing from middleware architectures. In particular, existing database middleware solutions for supporting multimedia applications are inadequate for these new environments because they are designed for rather static systems. As a solution for these problems, we are developing a prototype for supporting multimedia applications using the NetTraveler middleware architecture. Our prototype will be designed to form adhoc federations of sites that work together to deliver multimediacontent. Also, this solution will adapt to changes in the environment to provide access to newly available data sources to provide QoS.

In this paper we propose a universal multimediaaccess system using multimedia adaptation, named as "Active Room". In order to build Active Room, we design an appropriate adaptation system for active media. Active media means that it can actively adapt its contents according to - various environments including user characteristics and various devices such as PDA, PC, Mobile phone, HDTV, etc. To evaluate the proposed active media adaptation system, we have performed experiments with prominent features, color preference adaptation, visual information adaptation, and modality conversion. Experimental results show that prominent features work well with our adaptation framework. The proposed system can be also used for any other content adaptation services.

It is very challenging to maintain the high quality content delivery and in the mean time to preserve the digital rights management. In the past few years, many video encryption algorithms have been proposed, but the security of the algorithms have not been adequately analyzed.
