Interactive media aims to provide seamless access to digital content in a proactive and user centred manner. Regardless of the nature of the delivery channel, homogeneous or heterogeneous, and regardless of the user platform, media should be accessible efficiently and at optimum quality over the full available bandwidths and independently of terminal capabilities. In this paper, we argue that the development of efficient applications underpinning interactive media systems need to be based on successive approximations of content and metadata. The presented discussion relates to the content engineering side of media applications and describes how it can be used to easy, if not to achieve, the overall goal of a new generation of media applications. Three examples combining available technologies and ongoing developments to produce successive approximations of content and metadata are presented. Their application in the development of interactive multimedia systems is discussed and results of computer experiments aiming to demonstrate the suitability of these techniques are reported.

This paper discusses a new approach of generating TV-like multimedia presentations that are adapted to the target user preferences and to limited devices. Three main points are discussed: 1) the encoding of video presentations from a SMIL specification, 2) the adaptation of the video content based on the user preferences, and 3) the delivery of adapted multimedia presentations. The used architecture includes a content server, an adaptation proxy and a set of small devices in the form of personal device assistants (PDA). These devices request the content through a wireless network. In order to show how the system behaves regarding the user preferences and capabilities, two negotiation dimensions are considered: the user language and the memory capability of the device. The first dimension is used to generate a content that can be understood by the target user, e.g. a video with subtitles written in the preferred language. The second dimension is chosen to solve the problem of the system blocking that usually happens when limited devices access rich multimedia presentations over the network.

When speaking of wireless and mobile Internet, we often assume that a bi-directional access network must be within reach. Usually we see GPRS, UMTS and wireless LANs as carriers supporting the Internet access service. This service consequently provides a basis for browsing and retrieving a wealth of digital multimedia content upon user request. However, there are alternative means to deliver digital content to mobile users. Indeed, general content and content formats are independent from various communication methods. We focus on an alternative content delivery method - content push over terrestrial IP data broadcasting. To give a concrete context for discussion we assume DVB-T as the transmission technology. The unidirectional, wide-band, shared channel suits especially well delivery service that targets multiple end users on the move. Applied to mobile communications, IP data broadcasting proves to complement the traditional mobile Internet access service provided over bi-directional access systems. From the viewpoint of international standards developing organizations, we tackle the issues needed to establish a globally inter-operable IP datacast baseline as a service platform.

Protection of intellectual property is a critical issue in digital multimedia distribution systems. Cryptographic tools are commonly used for secure delivery of content and access keys to consumers via terrestrial, satellite, cable and Internet transmissions. A third requirement is the distribution of the copyright or usage rights associated with the digital content. The integrity, as opposed to security, of this data is essential to prevent unauthorized modification. Two approaches have been proposed in the open literature: allocating special fields in the transport stream and embedding a watermark into multimedia content. We present two new methods, based on secret sharing, to create channels with guaranteed data integrity.

In this paper, we present a personalized multimedia content delivery system dealing with both user preferences and terminal/network capabilities. In order to ease interoperability with third-party applications, content annotation, user preferences handling and terminal/network capabilities description are managed by MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards. Offline content adaptation and annotation tools are proposed for content preparation. content delivery is handled by client-server architecture. This architecture is built around custom personalization and adaptation tools, and a commercial content streamer. The proposed system has been used to provide universal multimedia access within the EC-funded R&D project PERSEO.

A new statistical pattern recognition approach applied to human humming transcription is proposed in this research. A music note has two important attributes, i.e. pitch and duration. The proposed algorithm generates multidimensional humming transcriptions, which contain both pitch and duration information. Query by humming provides a natural means for content-based retrieval from music databases, and this research provides a robust front-end for such application. The segment of a note in the humming waveform is modeled by a hidden Markov model (HMM) while the pitch of the note is modeled by a pitch model using a Gaussian mixture model. Preliminary real-time recognition experiments are carried out with models trained by data obtained from eight human objects, and an overall correct recognition rate of around 80% is demonstrated.

Distributed platforms for live and on-demand media streaming delivery such as content distribution networks and media on-demand systems, are being diffused mainly due to the widespread availability of IP-based, bandwidth-capable digital networks. Provision of multimedia group services is usually supported by transmitting media streams to subscribers organized in a multicast group. Although multicast streaming saves bandwidth and improves scalability, it is prone to be hacked. This paper proposes an efficient technique centered on the Blowfish symmetric encryption algorithm for securing media streams based on the real-time transport protocol (RTP). The developed technique along with an ad-hoc key distribution mechanism is seamlessly embedded into our Java-based cooperative playback system - ViCRC/sup C/, which allows multicast transmission on-demand of archived multimedia sessions to a cooperative group of clients.

The strength of data integrity, message authentication and pseudonym generation mechanisms in the design of secure multimedia communication applications over the Internet relies on the quality of the message digest algorithms used in the digital signatures construction/verification process. In this paper, we propose neural network based evaluation benchmarks to assess the message digest function quality since there is lack of practical tests to be applied to message digest algorithms in the emerging field of designing secure information and communication systems especially for the delivery of multimedia content, where the issues of copyright protection and security in transactions are outstanding. These assessment tests are suggested here along with other ones derived from well known statistical and information theoretic methods, such as entropy test, and thus comprise a suitable practical evaluation methodology.

Maldives is an island nation with 1190 islands surrounded by water. The low population in the rural islands limit infrastructure developments leading to lack of access to secondary and higher education. The proposed system is a distance education model that uses the existing technology in Maldives to provide access to secondary education to the island population. The system allows the teachers to develop multimedia based instructional content which is then delivered to the students via the Internet, or burnt onto CD-ROMs and mailed, or a combination of both. The interaction between the students and the system is two-fold. The first is the incorporated help system which automatically detects student requirements and guides accordingly. The second is the interaction between the student and the tutor where the tutor has the possibility of using various communications means such as email, telephone or even teleconferencing.
