The Multicarrier code division multiple access (MCCDMA) is a flexible and adaptive radio interface to provide dynamical bit rate transmission and a variety of services on radio channels. It can sufficiently utilize the subcarrier diversity and meet the demand of diverse multimedia services;therefore it is broadly considered as an effective approach for future wireless multimedia communications. But it is very sensitive to carrier drifts, while the orthogonal property between the subcarriers is lost with frequency offset. An accurate channel estimate allows the use of multiuser detection. After reviewing some blind channel estimation algorithms with the signal time domain structure and statistic characteristic, we propose a constant modulus based adaptive blind channel estimation at the base station for MC-CDMA systems in frequency-selective fading channel environment with the consideration of carrier offset compensation. Compared with the SVD-based method and Finite Alphabet-based method, it illustrates the effectiveness with numerical simulations.

Due to skewed popularity of objects in many continuous media applications, data placement, techniques such as selective replication have been introduced to resolve potential load imbalance problem by providing more replicas for more popular objects, resulting in a higher availability of hot objects and a more efficient usage of bourided storage space. To fully harness the advantage of selective replication technique, one may need to periodically reconfigure the number of instances of objects and data placement of them to tune up the system performance because, in reality, access frequency varies over time in many reasons. Reconfiguration usually requires time and disk bandwidth resulting in a degradation of the system performance during the process. This paper proposes algorithms for dynamic reconfiguration of continuous media servers based on ever changing popularity of objects. This paper quantifies the expected startup latency and reconfiguration overhead. Proposed analytic models and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed reconfiguration process is feasible in a reasonable amount of time. They also show tolerable performance degradation due to bandwidth overhead during reconfiguration process, which is critical for most real applications.

content based video indexing and retrieval has its foundations in the analyses of the prime video temporal structures. Consequently, technologies for video segmentation and key-frame extraction have become crucial for the development of advanced digital video systems. Conventional algorithms for video partitioning and key-frame extraction are mainly implemented autonomously. By focusing he analysis on the compressed video features, this paper introduces a real-time algorithm for scene change detection and key-frame extraction that generates the frame difference metrics by analysing statistics of the macro-block features extracted from the MPEG compressed stream. The key-frame extraction method is implemented using difference metrics curve simplification by discrete contour evolution algorithm. This approach resulted in a fast and robust algorithm. Results of computer simulations are reported.

From the Book: PREFACE The explosion of on-line web information has given rise to many query-based textsearch engines (such as Alta Vista) and manually constructed topic hierarchies (suchas Yahoo!). With the current growth rate of web information, especially broadbandmultimedia data, query data are growing incomprehensibly large and manual classification in topic hierarchies is creating a major bottleneck. Consequently, the hugeamount of multimedia data is imposing on people a heavy burden of manipulating, searching, interpreting, skimming, and integrating information. Thus, efficientmultimediacontent analysis tools are needed to address these user's needs. This book presents a solution to problems arising from the demand for fastinformation access and for sharing in real-time multimedia transmission over theInternet. We present in this book a solution which exploits software agents thatare placed throughout the network environment. These hierarchical video analysisagents process multimedia streams in real time, and automatically decompose andunderstand the multimediacontent so as to facilitate information access and sharing. multimediacontent contains both the perceptual content such as color, motion,or acoustic features and the conceptual content, which is specified based on conceptsor semantics that can be expressed by text descriptions. Both types of contents areembedded simultaneously in multimedia streams, and usually are complementaryto each other. This book adaptively analyzes both kinds of video contents bycombining mixed media cues from audio, video and text. First, a high-performance module for on-line video segmentation based on scene-change detection isdescribed. The module serves as the first step of any videostream construction and analysis. To meet the high computational demand, ourproposed video scene change detection algorithms are very efficient while maintaining high accuracy and recall rates for fast on-line video analysis. Second, the percep

We had indicated multimedia communication services, which can provide multimedia information according to functionality and availability for users. We had already proposed "multimedia Scalability Package: MSP" as data structure in integrated multimedia services. In this paper, we proposed a distance education system based on MSP data communication as one of MSP multimedia services. We especially considered this system using proceedings data and video contents. The structuring methods of data architecture are used scalability. We had studied description schemes in MSP data, such as, header information and behavior information of content data for tele-lecturing system. It is needed to update mode data, which could control remote play and MSP data access in user side. That's because we send only control data in the case of remote control, any network environment is available, such as, wide band, narrow band and wireless network. In this system, to decode MSP data realized a virtual tele-lecturing system between presenter's and users' terminals. Moreover, overview of this system was shown. MSP data has been previously transmitted to data repository in users' terminals, They are points that it uses information key as manipulation of lecture data, and that this key simultaneously works all data. For example, when lecture's data has contents scalability of abstract data, data for 3 minutes and full data for 10 minutes, level information controls to play contents. Finally, this system architecture was indicated, and procedure of MSP data and MSP data structure were explained and were simulated. So it was shown that this system was available as tele-lectures.
