multimedia data, typically image data, is increasing rapidly across the Internet and elsewhere. To keep pace with the increasing volumes of image information, new techniques need to be investigated to retrieve images intelligently and efficiently. content-based image retrieval is always a challenging task. In this paper, a stochastic model, called Markov Model Mediator (MMM) mechanism, is used to model the searching and retrieval process for content-based image retrieval. Different from the common methods, our stochastic model carries out the searching and similarity computing process dynamically, taking into consideration not only the image content features but also other characteristics of images such as their access frequencies and access patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism together with the stochastic process can assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In the traditional user interfaces of Query-by-Example (QbE) in content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR), finding good combinations of query examples is essential for successful retrieval. Unfortunately, the traditional user interfaces are not suitable for trying different combinations of query examples. These systems assumed query examples are added incrementally. The only way to refine the query was to add more example images. When no additional example is found in the result set, the search is considered to have converged. Furthermore, no place was provided to hold previous query results. We are developing ImageGrouper, a new interface for content-based image retrieval. In this system, the users can interactively compare different combinations of query examples by dragging and grouping images on the workspace (Query-by-Group.) Unlike the traditional systems, a group of images is considered as the basic unit of the query. Because the query results are displayed on another pane, the user can quickly review the results. Combining different query results is also easier. ImageGrouper makes possible new image search methods that were difficult in the traditional user interfaces. First, since the user can annotate text information on each group, integration of keyword-based and content-based search becomes easy. Second, by creating a hierarchy of query examples, the user can begin with collecting relatively generic image first, then narrow down the search to more specific images. Finally, the user can create multiple groups of positive examples. Therefore, we can extend relevance feedback algorithms from two-classes problem (positive and negative) to multiple-classes problem (multiple positive and negative classes.).

This paper describes the design and implementation of a 5 layered web-based multimedia content management system (MCMS) using the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). A prototype based on our framework has been implemented in the News On Demand KIOSK Network for organizing, integrating and composing of personalized digital news for interactive broadcasting. The aim of the MCMS project is to provide a collaborative environment among news producers for making them work more effectively despite the time and location constraints. The MCMS generates SMIL document that is structured, profiled and streamed to end-user using XML and XSLT techniques, which form the backbone of digital news broadcasting. The major contributions with regard to the digital MCMS can be summarized as: (1) Support for effective personalization of multimedia news content and presentation styles through the utilization of XML and XSLT. (2) Separation of design and content facilitated by MCMS. This allows journalist and editors to focus on content preparation rather than advanced HTML and SMIL coding. (3) Support for the re-use and re-purpose operations of the same multimedia elements to be part of the other digital news program. (4) Platform independent MCMS allowing an author to access the application everywhere via Internet without any need of additional hardware or software. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

To enable wireless Internet and other data services using mobile appliances, there is a critical need to support content-rich cellular data communication, including voice, text, image and video. However, mobile communication of multimedia content has several bottlenecks, including limited bandwidth of cellular networks, channel noise, and battery constraints of the appliances. In this paper, we address the energy and bandwidth bottlenecks of image data communication. We present an energy efficient, adaptive data codec for still images that can significantly minimize the energy required for wireless image communication, while meeting bandwidth constraints of the wireless network, the image quality, and latency constraints of the wireless service. Based on wavelet image compression, we propose an energy efficient wavelet image transform algorithm (EEWITA) for lossy compression of still images, enabling significant reductions in computation as well as communication energy needed, with minimal degradation in image quality. Additionally, we identify wavelet image compression parameters that can be used to effect trade-offs between the energy savings, quality of the image, and required communication bandwidth. We also present a dynamic configuration methodology that selects the optimal set of parameters to minimize energy under network, service, and appliance constraints. We demonstrate the significant energy and air time (service cost) savings possible by using the proposed energy efficient, adaptive image codec under different cellular access technologies.

In this paper we present a client/server-based un-intrusive collaborative multimedia application - called eMeeting - that extracts and archives salient visual information from seminars, while allowing interaction among presenters and the audience in real time. The application uses API's of the Lotus Sametime® system such as secure login, directory, meeting and multimedia services, to which we have added our own extensions. These extensions use the binary messaging channel of Sametime and allow us to add stroke-based chat as well as stroke-based annotations of slides. This permits communication among all clients. In parallel with the services just mentioned and in the same Java application, users of eMeeting are presented with slides that the system extracts from the presenter's visual material using an automatic recognition algorithm that classifies video frames as slides. At this time we assume that the system may or may not have access to the visual content in electronic form. Users can follow the seminar in the form of presenter's video, and as a series of extracted images. The server transmits the slides cyclically to each user using IP multicast giving each client the opportunity to select any previous slide. Thus, late joiners can browse slides that have been accumulated by the system.

An MPEG system layer compressed-domain editing technique is proposed to facilitate the delivery and integration of multiple segments of MPEG files, residing on remote databases. Various multimedia applications, including retrieval and summarization, split MPEG files into small segments along shot boundaries and store them separately. This traditional method requires extra management and storage payload, provides only fixed segmentations, and may not be play smoothly. In order to solve this problem, our MPEG system-domain editing tool directly extracts video-audio information from the original MPEG sources and combines them to generate a single MPEG file. Manipulated wholly in the system bitstream domain, this method does not require decoding, re-encoding, and re-synchronization of audio and video data. Thus, it operates in real-time and provides great flexibility. This composite MPEG file can be transmitted and displayed through general Web interfaces. The proposed method is applied to our video retrieval, video summarization, and video editing systems, and has shown its great advantages. © 2002 IEEE.

Continuing improvements in human language algorithms, coupled with improvements in digital storage and processing, inspire growing confidence in multilingual information access systems. systems exist to transcribe broadcast news, segment broadcasts into individual stories and sort them by topic. These technologies, useful in isolation, are now being combined to produce intelligent multilingual systems. DARPA TIDES combines technologies in detection, extraction, summarization and translation to create systems capable of searching a wide range of streaming multilingual text and speech sources, in real time, to provide effective access for English-speaking users. The broad scope of tasks and languages in programs like TIDES demands close coordination of research and shared resources. These resources includes large collections of raw text and speech;translations and summaries;annotations of topics, named entities and relations, syntactic structures and propositional content;lexicons;annotation specifications and protocols;and distribution formats and standards. The TIDES program has initiated ambitious attacks on difficult problems, with linguistic resources matched to the needs of each piece of the overall research enterprise. This paper will describe the coordinated language resources being created under the TIDES aegis.

Using a meaningful combination of advanced video processing techniques, the development of a. low-access latency video portal is presented. The main objective is to overcome the speed limitations of existing video indexing and retrieval systems. Due to the linear and data intensive nature of video, the temporal segmentation of video sequences is the first step towards the implementation of the system. Video is first partitioned into basic units called shots. Thereafter, each single shot can be identified by a key-frame containing the most relevant scene information. For the sake of efficiency these processing steps are carried out in the compressed domain. Once key frames have been extracted a family of successively simplified image features is defined using colour histograms. The image colour distribution is quantised according to a scale-parameter obtained,by convolving the colour distribution function with Gaussians of increasing size. The generated family of histograms is then used to define descriptors at various levels of detail. Using the hierarchical descriptor structure irrelevant details and noise are removed in a very early processing step. Large sets of non-similar images are discriminated at very low computational cost using low detailed descriptions. The search is then refined progressively until only a few very similar objects or images are found and ranked using higher levels of detail. The proposed approach uses both local and global image information to capture spatial image properties. Additionally, it allows content-based searching and adaptively weighted relevance feed-back

Video databases became an active field of research during the last decade. The main objective in such systems is to provide users with capabilities to friendly search, access and playback distributed stored video data in the same way as they do for traditional distributed databases. Hence, such systems need to deal with hard issues : (a) video documents generate huge volumes of data and are time sensitive (streams must be delivered at a specific bitrate), (b) contents of video data are very hard to be automatically extracted and need to be humanly annotated. To cope with these issues, many approaches have. been proposed in the literature including data models, query languages, video indexing etc. In this paper, we present SIRSALE : a set of video databases management tools that allow users to manipulate video documents and streams stored in large distributed repositories. All the proposed tools are based on generic models that can be customized for specific applications using ad-hoc adaptation modules. More precisely, SIRSALE allows users to : (a) browse video documents by structures (sequences, scenes, shots) and (b) query the video database content by using a graphical tool, adapted to the nature of the target video documents. This paper also presents an annotating interface which allows archivists to describe the content of video documents. All these tools are coupled to a video player integrating remote VCR functionalities and are based on active network technology. So, we present how dedicated active services allow an optimized video transport for video streams (with Tamanoir active nodes). We then describe experiments of using SIRSALE on an archive of news video and soccer matches. The system has been demonstrated to professionals with a positive feedback. Finally, we discuss open issues and present some perspectives.
