The current systems for the support of online learning provide a certain degree of multimedia capability by allowing users to access online learning objects but are still limited when accessing the actual content of learning objects and exchanging experiences about the learning objects. The work introduced in this paper describes an innovative multimedia tool for enriched communication between users and highly flexible control of the use of learning objects.

A number of content-based music retrieval systems have been presented in the last few years. Although query-by-humming has been one of the preferred strategies, the translation of voice input into note-like attributes has been tackled with naive algorithms. In this paper, we present a system developed to consider the peculiar facets of the singing voice. A pre-processing block for signal enhancement, an algorithm for pitch detection and a labeling stage for fine adjustment of intonation are addressed in the context of querying by singing. Experimental results confirm that this system is able to translate a sung performance into a representation close to a music score, thus particularly suited for melody-based search.

Proliferation of audio databases on the WWW (World Wide Web) necessitates an audio retrieval system to find certain audio content within the audio corpus. Many papers have presented concepts, methodologies and systems to offer users ways to retrieve melody from collections of music contents. In this paper, we present a new index scheme to retrieve music based on the accumulated data of previous user queries to music. We first describe the current status of existing music information retrieval systems, and then present the design and implementation of our prototype system. We report the results obtained from an empirical evaluation of our approach.

This paper analyzes the similarity measurement in content-based image and video retrieval systems (CBIR). The goal is to identify preliminaries for successful queries as the basis for the implementation of a query engine in the content-based visual information retrieval framework (VizIR). VizIR is an open CBIR framework for researchers, software developers and instructors. Past efforts in CBIR have lead to several general-purpose prototypes. However, these prototypes differ in implemented feature classes, user-interfaces and similarity measurement. VizIR aims at overcoming this unsatisfactory situation. The paper overviews wide-spread techniques for similarity measurement in CBIR, derives a general querying model and proposes conditions for similarity measurement algorithms on the macro-level. Based on these conditions two methods (the linear weighted merging method and the query model approach) are evaluated and the superior method chosen for the VizIR project. Additionally, the major goals of the VizIR project are outlined and interested researchers are invited to participate in the project.

content-based retrieval has been identified as one of the most challenging problems, requiring a multidisciplinary research among computer vision, information retrieval, artificial intelligence, database, and other fields. In this paper, we address the specific aspect of inferring semantics automatically from raw video data. In particular, we present the Cobra video database management system that supports the integrated use of different knowledge-based methods for mapping low-level features to high-level concepts. We focus on dynamic Bayesian networks and demonstrate how they can be effectively used for fusing the evidence obtained from different media information sources. The approach is validated in the particular domain of Formula 1 race videos. For that specific domain we introduce a robust audio-visual feature extraction scheme and a text recognition and detection method. Based on numerous experiments performed with DBNs, we give some recommendations with respect to the modeling of temporal dependences and different learning algorithms. Finally, we present the experimental results for the detection of excited speech and the extraction of highlights, as well as the advantageous query capabilities of our system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In recent years, applications in multimedia databases have been more and more important. One new capability is to search by similarity in low-level image features (such as color, texture, shape, and motion). The performance of the similarity search highly relies on efficient index structures. However, current high-dimensional indexing techniques have limitations and a simple sequential scan algorithm can outperform them in many cases. We notice that few researchers have really evaluated the utilization of the actual memory size and the trade-off between I/O access time and computation time. Some methods tried to reduce the I/O access time but caused computation overhead. We propose a novel indexing technique, the RA-Blocks (Region Approximated Blocks), to overcome these limitations and improve the similarity search in multimedia databases. We also demonstrate the better performance of our work in experiments.

This paper presents an approach based on wireless Web and dialogue system convergence for multimodal, multimedia communication services over converged networks. It uses a unique event-triggered service delivery method that separates service interaction and wirelessWeb-based service delivery. Our approach results in an architecture of WAP-based, location-independent, wireless service monitoring, notification and service access for mobile users that can be applied over various network bearers in enterprise environment. A new wireless secure server (WSS) provides secure connections to dialogue systems. It allows one-key switching to retrieve the multimedia content. A prototype system was implemented and performance advantages were demonstrated on several enterprise service applications.

Recently, developing interactive satellite multimedia networks, such as digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel via satellite (RCS) systems, has become important. We develop a dynamic resource allocation algorithm in a multifrequency time-division multiple access (MF-TDMA) basis for return link of an interactive satellite multimedia network. The proposed timeslot assignment algorithm, very efficient dynamic timeslot assignment (VEDTA) algorithm, gives an optimal assignment plan within a very short period of time. Owing to the optimality of the resulting solution and computational efficiency, we believe that our algorithm could be utilized in field applications.

Tree-based multidimensional indexes are integral to efficient queryingin multimedia and GIS applications. These indexes frequently use shapes in internal tree nodes to describe the data stored in a subtree below. We show that the standard Minimum BoundingRe ctangle descriptor can lead to significant inefficiency during tree traversal, due to false positives. We also observe that there is often space in internal nodes for richer, more accurate descriptors than *** propose exploiting his free space to form subtree predicates based on simple Boolean combinations of standard descriptors such as rectangles. Since the problem of choosingt hese boolean bounding predicates is NP-complete, we implemented and tested several heuristics for tuningthe bounding predicates on an index node, and several heuristics for decidingwh ich nodes in the index to improve when available tuningt ime is limited. We present experiments over a variety of real and synthetic data sets, examiningthe performance benefit of the various tuninghe uristics. Our experiments show that up to 50% of the unnecessary I/Os caused by imprecise subtree predicates can be eliminated usingthe boolean bounding predicates chosen by our algorithms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
