content-based video indexing and retrieval has its foundations in the analyses of the prime video temporal structures. Consequently, technologies for video segmentation and key-frame extraction have become crucial for the development of advanced digital video systems. Conventional algorithms for video partitioning and key-frame extraction are mainly implemented autonomously. By focusing the analysis on compressed video features, this paper introduces a real-time algorithm for scene change detection and key-frame extraction that generates frame difference metrics by analysing the statistics of the macro-block features extracted from an MPEG compressed stream. The key-frame extraction method is implemented using difference metrics in curve simplification by means of a discrete contour evolution algorithm. This approach resulted in a fast and robust algorithm. Results of computer simulations are reported.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a web-based collaborative enabled multimedia content authoring and management system (CMCAMS) for organizing, integrating and composing personalized and interactive course notes for online education. A 5-layered architecture is proposed for the CMCAMS and is implemented using the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). A web-based distance education system has been developed over this framework to test its effectiveness. This system enables educators to manage personalized learning materials that are structured, profiled and streamed to students. It examines the user's profile to identify what level of difficulty to incorporate and what kind of presentation style to adopt based on the bandwidth available to students. The CMCAMS uses XML and XSLT techniques to generates SMIL documents, which form the backbone for educational online materials. The CMCAMS has several essential features: (1) remote access, (2) easy to use, and (3) support for multi-style.

In last decade, we have seen the first steps to the end of passive television. Thanks to continuous advances in hardware and software, digital TV technology is now mature enough to enhance traditional TV sets (limited to content reproduction) with computing capability to run multimedia software integrating richer formats. A significant example of this progress is Internet access through television, which is becoming a reality in the last generation of digital set-top boxes. However, both media (computers and TVs) are different enough to require noteworthy modifications in their respective computing models. The MHP (multimedia home platform) standard is the first one that tries to define regulations in that sense. We comment on some technical aspects of the MHP solution.

A new system is presented for accessing remote document (ARD) in a limited computing environment. It provides mobile device (PDA, HPC and PPC) users with the ability to easily access remote documents over the Internet and to quickly view the content with its original look and feel without downloading and further to print or fax the document on a remote printer over the Internet. This is achieved through the combination of the unique document streaming-on-demand mechanism and the ability to preserve the original look and feel, and off-the-shell products that support Internet printing services. We describe in detail how the challenging issues are addressed and how the system is implemented.

There are numerous contexts in which systems need to buffer multimedia signal content. If such a buffer overflows, signal data are lost in an uncontrolled manner, which can lead to large end-to-end distortions. However, if the queued signals are distortion-tolerant, overflows can be avoided, and significant performance gains realized, by reducing the fidelity of the signals in a gradual, controlled, manner. Based on ideas of successive-approximation source coding, we design an adaptive-buffering algorithm to minimize end-to-end distortion. This algorithm performs nearly as well as a performance bound on all possible algorithms. Perhaps most importantly, the algorithm's performance remains robust across a wide range of (unpredictable) utilization rates (input rate/output rate).

In cellular WCDMA systems, power control is used to assist the receiver to achieve minimum signal power deviation from its desired mean value. By minimising the signal power variation, the desired bit error rate of the desired user can be achieved while causing minimum interference to other multiple access users. We investigate two power control algorithms. Namely, the conventional fixed step-size power control algorithm and the newly proposed adaptive step-size algorithm. Simulations on a frequency selective fading, L-resolvable multipaths reverse link system were carried out. Lastly, results in terms of bit error probability for the above mentioned algorithms were presented.

A new system architecture called decoder-downloadable system is described. The purpose of this system is to provide a uniform platform for the multimedia world based on image compressions using characteristics of the contents. This system enables dynamic decoder downloading by negotiation between servers and clients for seamless and minimum delay playback. This negotiation scheme is implemented by Java and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker). Thus, servers and clients in this system are independent from OSes and hardware specifications. This system is suitable for TV broadcasting as well as Internet streaming. We improve a decoder architecture in order to make the system more flexible. A decoder has some functions such as bitstream parsing, image compression algorithms (DCT, wavelet, motion estimation and so on). However, conventional decoders are monolithic software. Thus, it is impossible to share parts of decoders. The proposed method enables a module-based decoder and sharing some modules among some decoders. Consequently, the flexible decoder can make downloading time shorter by avoidance to download redundant parts of decoders. It also achieves scalability enabling this system to be used in some multimedia applications, such as a multimedia content search system, as well as a multimedia player.

The multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) is a flexible and adaptive radio interface to provide dynamical bit rate transmission and a variety of services on radio channels. It can sufficiently utilize the subcarrier diversity and meet the demand of diverse multimedia services; therefore it is broadly considered as an effective approach for future wireless multimedia communications. However, it is very sensitive to carrier drifts, while the orthogonal property between the subcarriers is lost with frequency offset. An accurate channel estimate allows the use of multiuser detection. After reviewing some blind channel estimation algorithms with the signal time domain structure and statistic characteristic, we propose a constant modulus based adaptive blind channel estimation at the base station for MC-CDMA systems in a frequency-selective fading channel environment with the consideration of carrier offset compensation. Compared with the SVD-based method and finite alphabet-based method, it illustrates the effectiveness with numerical simulations.

MAM (multi-mode access memory) is a memory that has the characteristics of PSMU (parallel search and multiple update). This new type of memory is applied to LAPCAM (linear array of processors with content addressable memory) architecture for image processing. Using MAM, the global and regional type of image processing algorithms can be developed efficiently. MAM consists of 3 different types of memory i.e. conventional memory (RAM), content addressable memory (CAM), and shift/rotate memory (FIFO). The objectives of the research are focused on the design of MAM memory, implementation of the design in VHDL (VHSIC hardware description language), verification of the design by simulation using software active-HDL and evaluation of the simulation results.
