An MPEG system layer compressed-domain editing technique is proposed to facilitate the delivery and integration of multiple segments of MPEG files, residing on remote databases. Various multimedia applications, including retrieval and summarization, split MPEG files into small segments along shot boundaries and store them separately. This traditional method requires extra management and storage payload, provides only fixed segmentations, and may not be play smoothly. In order to solve this problem, our MPEG system-domain editing tool directly extracts video-audio information from the original MPEG sources and combines them to generate a single MPEG file. Manipulated wholly in the system bitstream domain, this method does not require decoding, re-encoding, and re-synchronization of audio and video data. Thus, it operates in real-time and provides great flexibility. This composite MPEG file can be transmitted and displayed through general Web interfaces. The proposed method is applied to our video retrieval, video summarization, and video editing systems, and has shown its great advantages.

Copyright in the digital age is both threatened and renewed by technical developments. Cultural heritage is becoming widely accessible; authors and editors can broadly distribute music, films, books and multimedia in new formats. However, the technique does not only encourage piracy, it also provides electronic intellectual property rights management tools. This paper proposes to lead a general legal overview on provisional and digital solutions to protect copyrighted works. After a review of the legal regulation framework, different ways of protecting work are described, as well as legal conditions for digital rights management system validity and efficiency. Finally, we consider how this new type of private regulation fits in with traditional public regulation in the IPR area.

We present a client/server-based un-intrusive collaborative multimedia application - called eMeeting - that extracts and archives salient visual information from seminars, while allowing interaction among presenters and the audience in real time. The application uses APIs of the Lotus Sametime/spl reg/ system such as secure login, directory, meeting and multimedia services, to which we have added our own extensions. These extensions use the binary messaging channel of Sametime and allow us to add stroke-based chat as well as stroke-based annotations of slides. This permits communication among all clients. In parallel with the services just mentioned and in the same Java application, users of eMeeting are presented with slides that the system extracts from the presenter's visual material using an automatic recognition algorithm that classifies video frames as slides. At this time we assume that the system may or may not have access to the visual content in electronic form. Users can follow the seminar in the form of presenter's video, and as a series of extracted images. The server transmits the slides cyclically to each user using IP multicast giving each client the opportunity to select any previous slide. Thus, late joiners can browse slides that have been accumulated by the system.

In this paper we describe the implementation of a medical image aid system designed for fast access to images based on their semantic content. The raw and processed images are grouped according to image type and image content and are organized in a hierarchy. The data organization in the system consists of a collection of such hierarchies that are used to efficiently store images and other related knowledge. The novelty of our system is that it accepts an arbitrary number of user-defined attributes and other features that characterize the image, as well as image processing algorithms for feature extraction. The system supports different query types and it is capable of searching images using multiple levels of symbolic and quantitative descriptions. This system provides a platform for future research on linking knowledge-based image understanding with content-based image retrieval.

This paper proposes some novel techniques to accommodate users with different transmission rate requirements in a CDMA system which employs orthogonal variable spreading factor codes. Several static and dynamic code assignment strategies are put forth and their behavior investigated, in terms of call blocking probability and number of required call reassignments. Their efficiency in dealing with various traffic loads is demonstrated, quantitatively showing the superior performance of our dynamic scheme with respect to a so-called "optimal" code assignment strategy recently presented in the literature.

Recent data mining algorithms have been designed for application domains that involve several types of objects stored in multiple relations in relational databases. This fact has motivated the increasing number of successful applications of relational data mining over recent years. On the other hand, such applications have introduced a new threat to privacy and information security since from non-sensitive data one is able to infer sensitive information, including personal information, facts or even patterns that are not supposed to be disclosed. The existing access control models adopted to successfully manage the access of information in complex systems present some limitations in the context of data mining tasks. The main reason is that such models were designed to protect the access to explicit data (e.g. tables, attributes, views, etc), whereas data mining tasks deal with the discovery of implicit data (e.g. patterns). In this paper, we take a first step toward an access control model for ensuring privacy in relational data mining, notably in multi-relational association rules (MRAR). In this model, users associated with different mining access levels, even using the same algorithm, are allowed to mine different sets of association rules. We provide the groundwork to build our access control model over existing technologies and discuss some directions for future work.

This work describes the optimization of a signal processing front-end for a distributed speech recognition system with the goal of reducing power consumption. Two categories of source code optimizations were used, architectural and algorithmic. Architectural optimizations reduce the power consumption for a particular system, in this case, the HP Labs Smartbadge IV prototype portable system. Algorithmic optimizations are more general and involve changes in the algorithmic implementation of the source code to run faster and consume less power. A cycle accurate energy simulation shows a reduction in power usage by 83.5% with these optimizations. The optimized source code runs 34 times faster than the original code, therefore it can run at lower processor clock speeds and voltages for further reductions in power consumption. This technique, known as dynamic voltage scaling, was implemented on the Smartbadge IV hardware for an overall reduction in power usage of 89.2%.

Downlink beamforming for DS-CDMA mobile radio with multimedia services

Downlink beamforming is a promising technique for direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems with multimedia services to effectively reduce strong interferences induced by high data rate users. In this paper, a new downlink beamforming technique is proposed that converts downlink beamforming problem into a virtual uplink one and takes into account of the data rate information of all users. Since the main complexity of this method is due to the existence of multidelay paths, two simplified algorithms are suggested using equivalent one-path channel vector to replace multipath channel vectors. Computer simulation results are given to evaluate downlink capacity of DS-CDMA systems using base station antenna array and the new algorithms proposed in this paper.

A growing diversity of pervasive devices such as wireless phones and hand-held computers is gaining access to the Internet and other information sources. However, much of the rich multimedia content cannot be easily handled by the terminal devices with limited communication, processing, storage and display capabilities. One of the driving applications of the MPEG-7 multimedia content description standard involves the concept of "Universal multimedia access." The basic idea of Universal multimedia access (UMA) is the allowance of scalable or adaptive delivery of multimedia to users and terminals regardless of conditions of communication bandwidth or capabilities of terminal devices and their support for media formats. In this paper, we describe how MPEG-7 enables UMA by providing tools for specification of Transcoding Hints, content Variations, Space and Frequency Views, and Summaries.
