This paper addresses the problem of providing different levels of performance guarantee for disk I/O. In typical applications, disk requests are classified into different categories based on the required quality of service (QoS), which is usually characterized by a priority and a deadline for each request. Traditional algorithms usually service all high priority requests before low priority requests, and this may result in potential starvation for the low priority requests. In this paper, a disk-scheduling algorithm is introduced to provide such QoS guarantee and avoid starvation. Our target applications for this algorithm are non-linear editing systems for continuous data, where the block size is large enough to ignore the seek time. The proposed algorithm tries to service a request with lower priority and strict deadline only if servicing this request will not violate the deadline constraints of a higher priority request. Simulation experiments are presented to show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the traditional ones.

UMTS networks will allow the deployment of new types of applications, that are rich, interactive and multimedia capable, because of increased bandwidth, richer devices and location awareness. These applications are not necessarily provided by the network operator, but can be created and deployed by any third party. However, these third parties will need access to the UMTS core network capabilities, especially when it comes to call related services, location based services and services that charge for certain content. Intelligent Network (IN) based service creation and delivery platforms deployed in current 2G and 2.5G networks do not offer suitable interfaces for this, since third parties need to have detailed knowledge and expertise of low level, telecommunication specific protocols and can jeopardize the integrity of the network. The recent activities within the standardization bodies 3GPP and ETSI SPAN, and the industry forums Parlay and JAIN show an increased interest in the area of open network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The Open Service access (OSA) specification is a collection of open network APIs for UMTS application provisioning defined by 3GPP. OSA is meant to allow third party application development and deployment by means of open, secure, and standardized access to core network capabilities, while preserving the integrity of the underlying network. We describe a prototype implementation, and list the possibilities and limitations of the OSA specification. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The so-called 2nd generation image coding methods segment images into homogenous regions of various sizes adaptively. Each region is then coded with an appropriate method according to its perceptual characteristics. One of our research aims is to extend 2nd generation image coding methods to meet not only the traditional rate distortion criterion but also the new "easy content access" criterion [6] of image coding. Towards this end, we introduce the region and colour co-occurrence matrix (RACOM), an image content description feature easily computable directly (without decoding) from the compressed domain of 2nd generation image coding methods, and use it for content-based image retrieval from large image databases. We show that RACOM is a very effective image content descriptor and has a comparable performance to state of the art techniques for content-based image retrieval. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

We propose two time slot allocation algorithms for code division multiple access with time division duplex (CDMA/TDD) systems to efficiently accommodate multimedia traffic. Assuming a practical multiple cell environment and a multimedia service model which consists of several kinds of circuit-switched and packet-switched services with different qualities of service (QoS), we evaluate the average delay of the CDMA/TDD system with the proposed algorithms, and compare the performance with that of CDMA with frequency division duplex (CDMA/FDD) and time division multiple access with TDD (TDMA/TDD) systems. Our computer simulation results show that the CDMA/TDD system with one of the proposed algorithms, which can effectively avoid interference among users with different QoS, can improve the average delay performance as compared with the other systems.

3rd generation mobile systems are mostly based on the wideband CDMA platform to support high bit rate packet data services. One important component to offer packet data service in CDMA is a burst admission control algorithm. In this paper, we propose and study a novel jointly adaptive burst admission algorithm, namely the jointly adaptive burst admission-spatial dimension algorithm (JABA-SD) to effectively allocate valuable resources in wideband CDMA systems to burst requests. In the physical layer, we have a variable rate channel-adaptive modulation and coding system which offers variable throughput depending on the instantaneous channel condition. In the MAC layer, we have an optimal multiple-burst admission algorithm. We demonstrate that synergy could be attained by interactions between the adaptive physical layer and the burst admission layer. We formulate the problem as an integer programming problem and derive an optimal scheduling policy for the jointly adaptive design. Both the forward link and the reverse link burst requests are considered and the system is evaluated by dynamic simulations which takes into account of the user mobility, power control and soft-handoff. We found that significant performance improvement, in terms of average packet delay, data user capacity and coverage, could be achieved by our scheme compared to the existing burst assignment algorithms.

The time split B-tree (TSBT) is modified for indexing a database of evolving binary images. This is accomplished by embedding ideas from linear region quadtrees that make the TSBT able to support spatio-temporal query processing. To improve query performance, additional pointers are added to the leaf-nodes of the TSBT. The resulting access method is called time split linear quadtree (TSLQ). algorithms for processing five spatio-temporal queries have been adapted to the new structure. Such queries appear in multimedia systems, or geographical information systems (GIS), when searched by content. The TSLQ was implemented and results of extensive experiments on query time performance are presented, indicating that the proposed algorithmic approaches outbalance respective straightforward algorithms. The region data sets used in the experiments were real images of meteorological satellite views and synthetic raster images.

Recent advances in computing and communications are leading to the creation of large-scale databases of visual and multimedia information. Such databases are finding ready applications in a wide range of fields such as advertising and marketing, education and training, entertainment, medicine, and remote sensing. Because of the very nature of visual and multimedia data, new and innovative methods are called for in modeling, processing, organizing and indexing of this data for efficient storage, management, access, and delivery of the content. The goal of this special section is to highlight the new research areas and explore technology frontiers, by soliciting and selecting quality papers addressing issues from various aspects of storage, search, retrieval, and processing of digital media data (video/image/audio) and across a wide range of research disciplines. For this special section, we have solicited papers in relevant areas, ranging from content capture and processing, database management, new results on similarity measures and semantic features, and query methods to multimedia systems embracing leading-edge technology, and special applications of media management, retrieval, and processing across multiple fields, from consumer media systems, digital libraries, and media imaging to remote sensing. We encouraged the authors of some very promising papers in the SPIE/IS&T Electronic Imaging Symposium (San Jose) 2001 conference on Storage and Retrieval of Media Databases to submit a full journal-quality version of their conference manuscript to this special section. We also received submissions from outside of the conference, in response to our general call for papers. All submitted papers have undergone multiple peer-reviews, and we accepted 12 papers after two rounds of revisions and follow-up reviews. e-Seminar is an IBM-Research internal prototype platform to allow all IBM-Research employees access to videos and slides of talks, seminars, presentations and other events at any IBM-Research campus worldwide. The platform facilitates an increased use of digital video by lowering the cost and complexity thresholds for the use of video in live and in on demand applications. The e-seminar system therefore increases the leverage of intellectual property, and helps to improve the communication between the laboratories of the IBM-Research Division All of the above is reached through use of a distributed Video-on-Demand system on all sites of the IBM-Research Division It is a highly integrative project, assembling tools, techniques and insights from a broad variety of knowledge fields including but not limited to networking, video recording/encoding, data streaming, video analysis, HCI, MM authoring data visualizing and distributed systems management. The e-Seminar system is designed to serve as a base platform to perform research on the broad range of all these areas. Currently ongoing research in the project explores how such a system can be built and operated with the least amount of people involved while at the same time reducing the breadth acid depth of skills necessary. Additional research is done in the area of real time analysis and indexing of the given material in ways that are relevant to the teaching purpose of the system. Also new ways of video network caching are explored.
