This paper describes an assortment of techniques and a system to adapt multimedia content. The ability to do so allows service providers to offer a wide range of multimedia services to users with various client capabilities. We present a system that is capable of serving a variety of client devices. To do so, we propose novel transcoding and video summarization algorithms. Additionally, we describe a system that invokes these algorithms dynamically as a function of the network, terminal and user information. The impact on the consumer is the added functionality that can be realized and the quality of their service.

We report about the LISTEN project, a research. project funded by the European Commission in the context of the Information Society Technology program (IST-1999-20646). LISTEN, which started in January 2001, will provide users with intuitive access to personalized and situated audio information spaces while they naturally explore everyday environments. A new form of multisensory content is proposed to enhance the sensual impact of a broad spectrum of applications ranging from art installations to entertainment events. This is achieved by augmenting the physical environment through a dynamic soundscape, which users experience over motion-tracked wireless headphones. Immersive audio-augmented environments are created by combining high-definition spatial audio rendering technology with advanced user modeling methods. These allow for adapting the content to the users individual spatial behavior. The project will produce several prototypes and a virtual-reality-based authoring tool. Technological innovations will be validated under laboratory conditions whilst the prototypes will be evaluated in public exhibitions.

In 1999, the Archaeology Technologies Laboratory (ATL) at North Dakota State University (NDSU) began developing an Internet-based Digital Archive Network for Anthropology (DANA). This federation of databases links researchers, students, and the general public to distributed databases that include realistic, accurate, three-dimensional (3D), visual representations of artifacts, fossils, and other objects, along with 2D digitized documents (e.g., maps, plan views, excavation profiles, and photographs) and various associated data. DANA is being created through development and implementation of cross-platform, open standards that will facilitate interoperability and exchange of information between remote systems. DANA enables dynamic use of digital models, virtual measurement tools, and an array of data supplied by contributing content providers (collaborators) for education and scholarly research. This online network of anthropology resources facilitates reliable, "anytime, anywhere" access to content and services. DANA constitutes an enormously valuable learning resource that can be accessed and used at all levels, from K-12, to undergraduate, to post-graduate, to professional, to lifelong learning.

In this paper, an affinity-based approach that provides good similarity measures for Web document clustering to discover user access behavior on the World Wide Web (WWW) is proposed. The proposed approach generates the similarity measures for groups of Web documents by considering the user access patterns. Any clustering algorithm using better similarity measures should yield better clusters for discovering user access behavior. By utilizing the discovered user access behavior, for example, the companies can precisely target their potential customers and convince them to purchase their products or services in electronic commerce. An experiment on a real data set is conducted and the experimental result shows that the proposed approach yields a better performance than the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under the partitioning around medoid (PAM) method.

The problem of controlling access to multimedia multicasts requires the distribution and maintenance of keying information. The conventional approach to distributing keys is to use a channel independent of the multimedia content. We propose a second approach that involves the use of a data-dependent channel, and can be achieved for multimedia by using data embedding techniques. Using data embedding to convey rekeying messages can provide an additional layer of security when compared with the traditional approach. We then introduce multicast key distribution, and employ a recent tree-based key distribution scheme to exhibit the factors involved in transmitting keys using data embedding.

The paper reports on prototype systems to provide an infrastructure for the dynamic and flexible re-purposing of multimedia resources held in a large database. The database, called ARKive, holds film, stills, audio and text about globally endangered and native UK animal and plant species as well as their habitats. It aims to offer a wide range of users customised access to both the core multimedia data, and full integration of core data with external educational resources. Aspects covered in the paper include: designing for re-purposing with respect to specific audiences, storage and querying using RDF, XSL, SMIL and related technologies. The advantages of the approaches taken are discussed and key issues are highlighted.

Web-linked digital video disks provide high-quality interactive multimedia presentations and virtual laboratories with Web-access for timely materials and collaboration. The authors present techniques for presentation, interaction, and assessment. Experimental modules using these techniques have been developed using multimedia systems as content. New assessment methods allow materials to be dynamically modified to satisfy different learner backgrounds and objectives. A new software tool has been developed for gathering user statistics to best adapt the curriculum as well as evaluate the overall learning efficiency across diverse learner populations. The project is being disseminated at the University of Massachusetts, Springfield Technical Community College, Smith College, ENST/Paris and the National Technological University.

At VSMM 2000, we described the creation of a not-quite-finished immersive interactive museum exhibit called "This Old Digital City" (TODC) The exhibit uses real-time interactive virtual environment technology to immerse visitors in a 3D reconstruction of turn-of-the-20/sup th/-century, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Museum patrons sit in and operate a "time machine" to freely explore a forty-nine square block region of the city modeled in high-resolution 3D graphics. As visitors tour the city, they, are able to access multimedia content associated with buildings and other historically, significant sites. We see TODC as an example of using high-end virtual environment technology as an interface to historical archives. The exhibit opened October 27, 2000, soon after VSMM 2000. In this paper, we discuss our experience with the exhibit and future plans for it.

The TD/CDMA TDD system with unbalanced timeslot allocation between uplink and downlink is an appropriate method to distribute asymmetric traffic effectively in third generation mobile communication systems. One of the benefits of the TD/CDMA TDD system is an efficient statistical multiplexing on a large common pool of available resources, i.e., slots defined in time and code domain. However, in order to control the time varying asymmetry of traffic between uplink and downlink for the maximum throughput, a dynamic boundary movement is also required to get an optimum timeslot allocation. In this paper, a new optimal boundary movement algorithm for TDD operation is proposed, in which the downlink portion of the slots is maximized according to the intensity of access attempts by mobiles. The proposed algorithm has shown much better performance than the conventional TDD boundary movement algorithms in terms of the mean access delay of data traffic and the blocking probability of voice traffic.

This paper presents a data warehousing approach to hierarchical multimedia information retrieval. To tackle the key issues such as multimedia data representation, storage, integration, indexing, similarity measures, searching methods and query processing, the proposed algorithms allow one: (1) to extend the concepts of conventional data warehouse and multimedia databases to multimedia data warehouses for effective data representation and storage; (2) to develop a multimedia starflake schema to integrate multiple data streams for hierarchical data representation and indexing; (3) to apply data aggregation techniques for decision support to speed up query processing and searching. In addition, the new system architecture is compared with a conventional database structure. Furthermore, a case study is presented to illustrate the development of a content-based image retrieval system for cyclone pattern recognition. We conclude that the proposed approach can be applied to other multimedia systems with effective data storage, retrieval and integration.
