The problem of blind data rate detection for a multi-rate direct-sequence code-division multiple-access system is addressed. The system model is based on the time-division duplex mode of the UMTS standard. A host of blind algorithms based on or inspired by maximum likelihood principles are investigated. Rate detectors with implicit or explicit multiple access interference (MAI) suppression are considered. Based on the MAI suppression filter, additional rate detectors are devised. It is seen through simulation results that the best complexity and performance tradeoff is achieved by evaluating the "energy" at the output of the MAI suppression filter associated with the candidate rate.

The new MPEG-4 audio standard provides two toolsets for synthetic audio generation, audio processing and multimedia content description called Structured Audio (SA) and Binary Format for Scenes (BIFS). Moving from a systematic analysis of SA and from the implementation of an efficient SA decoder, this paper describes the design of a virtual DSP architecture able to exploit the data level parallelism contained in many typical audio processing algorithms. The proposed virtual DSP architecture shows good performance on general purpose platforms and can be easily adapted and optimized for parallel superscalar devices. The porting and results on a V-LIW DSP device confirm the effectiveness and flexibility of the approach, which is particularly suitable for standalone embedded solutions.

In the emerging markets for digital content distribution, traditional models for content programming still predominate. But there is a large potential for innovation and improvement in content selection to better meet consumers' demand for entertainment and news. We have developed a new paradigm and supporting technology to customize audience content to their specific preferences. One can identify several selection models for groups of individuals with similar interests in music, video, or other multimedia content to jointly customize a distribution channel. Our approach represents a balance between the two most widespread models available today, namely broadcasting and individual playback such as CD/DVD players. Using technologies such as data mining, multicasting and smart players, our model gives listeners access to automatic shared playlists. This kind of customized narrowcasting is especially applicable to distribution of content for which there is high demand for repeat listening or viewing, while at the same time being very idiosyncratic. Our approach can provide significant advantages to consumers, distribution channels, content owners and advertisers alike. We present the basic collaborative content programming algorithms and describe initial experiences with this new paradigm. Specifically, we describe KARC, a prototype of an Internet multichannel virtual radio station environment deployed at the IBM Almaden Research Center.

This work focuses on the problem of efficient assignment of the orthogonal-variable-spreading-factor (OVSF) codes for multimedia communications in W-CDMA systems. Due to the problem of code blocking in OVSF-code assignment considered by Minn and Siu, and the different probability of requests for each data rate, the OVSF-code assignment algorithms proposed so far cannot efficiently serve the high-rate requests when traffic load is high. Even though Minn and Siu proposed the algorithm to completely eliminate the code blocking, a system implemented with such an algorithm has a lower number of simultaneous voice conversations than the system with the code blocking problem. To efficiently provide the services for all supported rates, we propose an OVSF-code assignment scheme called the region division assignment (RDA). The performance of the proposed RDA scheme is evaluated by simulation for voice and video sources based on the multiple access protocol in UMTS/IMT-2000.

Resource-demanding services such as multimedia-on-demand (MOD) become possible as broadband Internet is getting more popular. However, as the size of multimedia files grows rapidly, storage of such large files becomes a problem. Since multimedia contents will generally become less popular with time, it is desirable to design a prediction algorithm so that the multimedia content can be unloaded from the server when it becomes unpopular. In this paper, we have two objectives: 1) analyse the MOD viewing trend in order to understand the viewing behaviour of users; 2) predict the viewing trend based on the knowledge obtained from the trend analysis. For trend analysis, we study three traditional regression models, including linear regression, exponential regression, and power regression, and propose two additive regression models, exponential-exponential-sum (EES) and exponential-power-sum (EPS), to improve the goodness of fit. Then, the most fitted models are used in trend prediction. Four prediction approaches, fixed regression selecting (FRS), continuous regression updating (CRU), historical updating (HU), and continuous regression with historical updating (CRHU) are proposed. From the numerical results, we find that CRHU, which is constructed by considering historical trends and new incoming viewing request data, is in general the best method in forecasting MOD trend.

multimedia services over satellite networks require a large amount of bandwidth for the delivery of variable-bit-rate video and audio signal with adequate quality of service. Hence, the bandwidth allocation has to be efficiently managed. In such a case, CDMA is a flexible multiple access technique since it allows a dynamic configuration of the resources allotted to the users of the system. This paper aims at describing a DSP-based DS/CDMA satellite multimedia system for multimedia applications, working in geo-stationary (GEO) satellite networks. The DSP implementation of the satellite modem is described in detail, both for what concerns the hardware section and the signal processing algorithmic section. The developed prototype, whose test is expected during year 2001, should be considered as a basic platform for developing flexible software radio-based architectures for satellite communications.

The paper describes a project that deals with the design and development of a multimedia database to access archive material from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, such as audio and video files, photographic pictures and music scores. The purpose of the project is to make the cultural heritage of Teatro alla Scala available in digital form and allow efficient search and retrieval. The project started in 1997 at the Laboratorio di Informatica Musicale (LIM) of the University of Milan, Italy. All tapes, as well as scores, pictures, and videos of the Teatro alla Scala have been digitized and a retrieval system has been developed: the Musical Archive Information System (MAIS), which contains, among others, audio and video material from the Scala archives. Because of the nature of the data it contains, essentially multimedia, the development of the system has posed several challenges, of which the most interesting ones are described. In particular, the organization of the data is described, with particular emphasis on the treatment of musical data, together with the tools developed to provide content-based queries on musical materials from both the intranet and Internet theatre environments.

All positive examples are alike; each negative example is negative in its own way. During interactive multimedia information retrieval, the number of training samples fed-back by the user is usually small; furthermore, they are not representative for the true distributions-especially the negative examples. Adding to the difficulties is the nonlinearity in real-world distributions. Existing solutions fail to address these problems in a principled way. This paper proposes biased discriminant analysis and transforms specifically designed to address the asymmetry between the positive and negative examples, and to trade off generalization for robustness under a small training sample. The kernel version, namely "BiasMap ", is derived to facilitate nonlinear biased discrimination. Extensive experiments are carried out for performance evaluation as compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

An interactive multimedia presentation in a distributed multimedia system requires synchronization of media streams, preprocessing media for content-based retrieval and low-bandwidth transmission over network, and user interface for interacting multimedia presentations. The power of synchronization models is limited to the synchronization specifications and user interactions. We propose an event-based synchronization model that can handle time-based actions while enabling user interactions like backward and skip. For effective transmission of multimedia data, the multimedia data needs to be preprocessed. The sprite generation and moving objects segmentation can reduce the required bandwidth significantly. We propose a method for multiresolution sprite which will allow reproduction of the video at different resolutions. The object segmentation will be extracted by generating a closed boundary for the object. Since the video data may also exist in a compressed format, we also propose to extract new features from the compressed video. We will consider compressed data that is generated by Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) which has been used in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 \cite{MPEG-4} and H263.1. The user will be provided a high-level user interface to access the contents of the presentation. We will test this integrated framework on distance education project over the Internet.

Watermarking is a process that embeds one signal into another signal to provide a hidden identity. It is widely used in multimedia signal processing for copyright protection purpose. Motivated by the observation that in some applications it is highly desirable for the physical layer itself to have some user identifying features instead of obtaining such information from the media access control (MAC) layer, we extend the watermarking idea and propose a method to give a convolutionally or turbo coded system a hidden identity. The proposed algorithm embeds a periodic watermark sequence into the convolutionally coded data sequence in the transmitter and detects the watermark using the channel error information supplied by the forward error control (FEC) module in the receiver. It does not consume any extra transmission bandwidth by properly designing the watermark sequence using the properties of convolutional codes. The algorithm has several potential applications in wireless and satellite communications. It is easy to implement and fits generic modems.
