The retrieval of stored images matching an input configuration is an important form of content-based retrieval. Exhaustive processing (i.e., retrieval of the best solutions) of configuration similarity queries is, in general, exponential and fast search for sub-optimal solutions is the only way to deal with the vast (and ever increasing) amounts of multimedia information in several real-time applications. In this paper we discuss the utilization of hill climbing heuristics that can provide very good results within limited processing time. We propose several heuristics, which differ on the way that they search through the solution space, and identify the best ones depending on the query and image characteristics. Finally we develop new algorithms that take advantage of the specific structure of the problem to improve performance.

Collaborative filtering is an important technology for creating user-adapting Web sites. In general the efforts of improving filtering algorithms and using the predictions for the presentation of filtered objects are decoupled. Therefore, common measures (or metrics) for evaluating collaborative filtering (recommender) systems focus mainly on the prediction algorithm. It is hard to relate the classic measurements to actual user satisfaction because of the way the user interacts with the recommendations, determined by their representation, influences the benefits for the user. We propose an abstract access paradigm, which can be applied to the design of filtering systems, and at the same time formalizes the access to filtering results via multi-corridors (based on content-based categories). This leads to new measures which better relate to the user satisfaction. We use these measures to evaluate the use of various kinds of multi-corridors for our prototype user-adapting Web site, the Active WebMuseum.

Progress in content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is hampered by the absence of well-documented and validated test-sets that provide ground-truth for the performance evaluation of image indexing, retrieval and clustering tasks. For quick access to large (tenthousands or millions of images) digital image collections a hierarchically structured indexing or browsing mechanism based on clusters of similar images at various coarse to fine levels is highly wanted. The Leiden 19th-Century Portrait Database (LCPD), that consists of over 16,000 scanned studio portraits (so-called Cartes de Visite CdV), happens to have a clearly delineated set of clusters in the studio logo backside images. Clusters of similar or semantically identical logos can also be formed on a number of levels that show a clear hierarchy. The Leiden Imaging and multimedia Group is constructing a CD-ROM with a well-documented set of studio portraits and logos that can serve as ground-truth for feature performance evaluation in domains beside color-indexing. Its grey-level image lay-out characteristics axe also described by various precalculated feature vector sets. For both portraits (near copy pairs) and studio logos (clusters of identical logos) test-sets will be provided and described at various clustering levels. The statistically significant number of test-set images embedded in a realistically large environment of narrow-domain images are presented to the CBIR community to enable selection of more optimal indexing and retrieval approaches as part of an internationally defined test-set that comprises test-sets specifically designed for color-, texture- and shape retrieval evaluation.

Dynamic replication algorithms aim at allocating, migrating and deleting copies of an object over various Internet hosts, according to the access patterns exhibited on-line, so as to improve object proximity for the end-users and/or load-balance the servers. Most of the existing algorithms try to disseminate the objects of an entire Internet Service Provider (ISP), without taking into account the needs and characteristics of specific web sites with large commercial value. In this paper we tackle the replication problem in an Internet environment, inspired by the need of news agencies and other information providers to include in their pages multimediacontent without incurring high access delays. We consider an environment that consists of a central multimedia repository and various physically dispersed sites. We propose a cost model to formalize the replication of multimedia objects located at the repository which can result in decreasing the download time. Taking into account implementation issues, such as the storage and processing capacity constraints, the proposed replication policy is evaluated and compared with alternatives including an ideal LRU caching scheme. Qualitative comparisons with the other replication schemes are reported as well.

Whereas current debate concerns more object-oriented technologies, such as the MPEG-4 standardization process, this paper adresses the state of the art of MPEG-2 technology. The MPEG-2 standard was adopted four years ago and is currently used for broadcasting digital television worldwide. Some comments and requirements from the first field trials require a new generation of MPEG-2 compression systems, and it was the objective of this paper to try to give some inputs for them. Whereas the first generations were mainly an optimization of the TM5 model with new motion estimators, new bit-rate control strategies and sometimes new mode selection algorithms, this new generation will be adaptive to the picture content and complexity. This adaptation concerns not only the input data (such as picture resolution, noise reduction) or the encoder itself(GOP structure, local adaptation, multipass encoding), but also the bandwidth (statistical multiplexing). From the results presented here, a 20 to 30% bit savings can be expected on average, and locally more than 50% (for special cases where the encoders fails, i.e,. noise, scene cuts, fading). After being in the cost and system software, the competition is now clearly on compression efficiency to add as many programs as possible into one single channel. The new techniques developed and introduced in this phase of optimization will certainly be exploited in future standards such as MPEG-4 or MPEG-7 where segmentation and scene characterization, respectively, will be key technologies.
