Video structure extraction is essential to automatic content-based organization, retrieval and browsing of video. However, while many robust shot segmentation algorithms have been developed, it is still difficult to extract scene structures or group shots into scenes. We present a novel audio assisted video segmentation scheme, in which audio and color information is integrated in video scene extraction. A novel audio segmentation scheme is developed to segment audio tracks into speech, music, environmental sound and silence segments. A robust algorithm for shot grouping based on correlation analysis is also developed to further enhance the scene extraction accuracy.

There are many system proposals for satellite-based multimedia communications that promise high capacity and ease of access. Many of these proposals require advanced switching technology and signal processing on-board satellites that will directly impact their cost, performance, availability, and time-to-market. Given the amount of commercial and technical risk involved in such complex systems, satellite operators have been looking for solutions that are simpler, yet flexible. One solution is based on a geosynchronous (GEO) satellite system equipped with simple on-board processing and switching. The satellite network is ATM-based and carries heterogeneous traffic. An important feature of this system is allowing for a maximum number of simultaneous users, hence, requiring effective connection admission control (CAC) and bandwidth on demand (BOD) algorithms. Nortel Networks has already developed an innovative CAC and BOD algorithm for the system. We present the BOD performance evaluations of the integrated algorithm. By detailed simulations, we show that the BOD scheme is able to efficiently utilize all available bandwidth and to gain high throughput. We also find that the end-to-end delays for voice traffic in the system falls well within the ITU's QoS specification for GEO-based satellite systems. The application buffer sizes observed in the simulations can serve as a guideline for ground station and satellite on-board memory design.

Video summarization is a key component in providing Internet users a way to quickly browse a video clip in different levels of detail, without the need to view the entire video clip. We present a hybrid approach to video summary generation, which automatically process the video, creating a multimedia video summary, while providing easy-to-use interfaces for verification, correction, and augmentation of the automatically generated story segments and extracted multimedia content. algorithms are developed to solve the sub-problems of story segmentation, story boundary refinement, and video summary generation. The use of automatic processing in conjunction with input from the user allows a user to produce meaningful video summaries efficiently.

Describes the data model that is used to implement the SIM content management server (CMS), an SGML/XML-native content server that is designed to support extremely fast data access to and dynamic updating of 100-GByte collections under high loads. This paper describes the requirements for supporting text-intensive applications and for building XML/SGML document management solutions. The SIM CMS employs a data model that is designed to directly support SGML and XML; this model is described, and a comparison with other models based on general-purpose database management systems is made.

When multimedia traffic is introduced into code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile networks,power should be assigned to users according to different bit rate and quality of service(QoS) requirements,in order to provide each user an acceptable *** this work,we derive the sufficient and necessary convergence condition for the power assignment algorithm taking into account only average signal-to-interference ratio(SIR) requirements,and study the normalized demand (demand-to-resource ratio) for a given outage probability *** and upper bounds of the normalized demand are obtained and two new power assignment algorithms taking into account both average SIR and outage probability requirements are proposed. Numerical results confirm the advantage of the proposed algorithms.

This paper highlights the key requirements of IMT-2000. The main characteristic of the proposed 3G solution is to satisfy the IMT-2000 requirements. A layered structure based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model is discussed to provide multimedia services. The functions of a flexible and efficient MAC/RLC (medium access control/radio link control) sublayer are identified. The paper is concluded by presenting the proposed implementations of the MAC/RLC sublayer in the 3G UMTS system. The MAC protocol has to resolve contention between mobiles accessing the same physical resources and also has to manage the packet access procedure. Since 3G systems will offer services to mobiles having varying QoS requirements, the MAC will need to be capable of managing the access demands of different users and different service classes. This can be achieved by using reservation and priority schemes. Delay sensitive services can use a capacity reservation scheme to guarantee quality of service. Priority schemes can be used to prioritize the requests from different services.

For the practical use of video retrieval systems, access must be provided so as to bridge the semantic gap between the system and users. Semiotics, which is concerned with the production of sense and of the way in which it is received by humans appears as the formal background for this goal. According to semiotics, semantics can be extracted at different levels of signification through a suitable set of rules which combine visual and auditory signs. An intermediate semantic level, which has to do with the combination of low-level signs, such as color, motion, and shape and their changes through time, accounts for the video expressiveness and the emotions provoked. It can be obtained automatically and is often useful for retrieval by content and similarity-based classification of video streams. Applications to retrieval of commercials based on expressive semantics are discussed.

A novel LEO/MEO two-tier satellite communication system with inter-satellite links (ISLs) is proposed for providing multimedia services to global mobile users. This two-tier system architecture can reduce the transmission delay for long-distance users via MEO satellites while keeping the benefits of using LEO satellites as the service access nodes. The routing and re-routing during a handoff operation is simplified. Since the physical topology of the underlying network is time-dependent, routing is crucial for guaranteeing the delay and delay variation performance for interactive applications. We decompose the routing problem into two parts, routing in the access network and routing in the core MEO ISL network. For the access network, a new routing algorithm called the maximum holding access protocol (MHAP) is proposed for minimizing the number of LEO handoffs. For core MEO ISL network, both minimum transmission delay routing (MTDR) and minimum transmission time jitter routing (MTTJR) are investigated. Using computer simulations, we show that the proposed routing algorithms can reduce the probability of call re-routing and thus are very suitable for providing interactive multimedia services.

We describe a scheme to combine the results of audio and face identification for multimedia indexing and retrieval. Audio analysis consists of speech and speaker recognition derived from a broadcast news video clip. The video component is analyzed to identify the persons in the same video clip using face recognition. When applied individually both speaker and face recognition schemes have limitations on conditions under which they perform reasonably well. By integrating the match-score results of both audio and video analysis, we find that the two techniques can complement each other. We discuss the system architecture for such a combined system, and discuss how decision fusion is applied to disparate match-scoring systems to yield the final speaker identity.
