When multimedia traffic is introduced into code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile networks, power should be assigned to users according to different bit rate and quality of service (QoS) requirements, in order to provide each user an acceptable connection. We derive the sufficient and necessary convergence condition for the power assignment algorithm taking into account only average signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) requirements, and study the normalized demand (demand-to-resource ratio) for a given outage probability requirement. Lower and upper bounds of the normalized demand are obtained and two new power assignment algorithms taking into account both average SIR and outage probability requirements are proposed. Numerical results confirm the advantage of the proposed algorithm.

A novel LEO/MEO two-tier satellite communication system with inter-satellite links (ISLs) is proposed for providing multimedia services to global mobile users. This two-tier system architecture can reduce the transmission delay for long-distance users via MEO satellites while keeping the benefits of using LEO satellites as the service access nodes. The routing and re-routing during a handoff operation is simplified. Since the physical topology of the underlying network is time-dependent, routing is crucial for guaranteeing the delay and delay variation performance for interactive applications. We decompose the routing problem into two parts, routing in the access network and routing in the core MEO ISL network. For the access network, a new routing algorithm called the maximum holding access protocol (MHAP) is proposed for minimizing the number of LEO handoffs. For core MEO ISL network, both minimum transmission delay routing (MTDR) and minimum transmission time jitter routing (MTTJR) are investigated. Using computer simulations, we show that the proposed routing algorithms can reduce the probability of call re-routing and thus are very suitable for providing interactive multimedia services.

We describe a scheme to combine the results of audio and face identification for multimedia indexing and retrieval. Audio analysis consists of speech and speaker recognition derived from a broadcast news video clip. The video component is analyzed to identify the persons in the same video clip using face recognition. When applied individually both speaker and face recognition schemes have limitations on conditions under which they perform reasonably well. By integrating the match-score results of both audio and video analysis, we find that the two techniques can complement each other. We discuss the system architecture for such a combined system, and discuss how decision fusion is applied to disparate match-scoring systems to yield the final speaker identity.

Web caching aims at reducing network traffic, server load and user-perceived retrieval delays by replicating popular content on proxy caches that are strategically placed within the network. While key to effective cache utilization, popularity information (e.g. relative access frequencies of objects requested through a proxy) is seldom incorporated directly in cache replacement algorithms. Rather other properties of the request stream (e.g. temporal locality and content size), which are easier to capture in an online fashion, are used to indirectly infer popularity information, and hence drive cache replacement policies. Recent studies suggest that the correlation between these secondary properties and popularity is weakening due in part to the prevalence of efficient client and proxy caches. This trend points to the need for proxy cache replacement algorithms that directly capture popularity information. We present an on-line algorithm that effectively captures and maintains an accurate popularity profile of Web objects requested through a caching proxy. We propose a novel cache replacement policy that uses such information to generalize the well-known greedy dual-size algorithm, and show the superiority of our proposed algorithm by comparing it to a host of recently-proposed and widely-used algorithms using extensive trace-driven simulations and a variety of performance metrics.

The minimum variance receiver has been proposed to blindly suppress the multiple-access interference in CDMA channels by minimizing the receiver's output variance based on constrained optimization. We consider the reduced-rank minimum variance receiver in asynchronous CDMA channels. The reduced-rank detector uses a reduced-rank approximation of the covariance matrix of the received data. When the covariance is known, the reduced-rank receiver cannot perform better than the full-rank receiver. However, when the covariance matrix is estimated, we demonstrate that the optimal reduced-rank receiver outperforms the full-rank receiver. The reduced-rank receiver is implemented adaptively using a subspace tracking algorithm; its performance is better than the conventional full-rank recursive least-square adaptive receiver.

Mobile multimedia systems have to provide mechanisms to cope with the heterogeneity caused by different access network and end system capabilities inherent to wireless communication. Adapting video streams on the fly can be used to match receivers processing and hardware capabilities and the QoS characteristics of wired and wireless links. Within this paper we present a whole suit of filter services that can be applied in order to match frame rate, frame size, visual quality and bandwidth constraints. The filter operate on wavelet coded video streams and adapts them in real-time. A special self learning video filter estimates the source bandwidth of the stream, and times its internal filter operations based on users preferences in order to match a given target bandwidth. We also derive algorithms that map between the filter parameters (i.e. what operations the filters perform) and the resulting bandwidth of the stream.

With the Internet increasingly being used as the access medium for a variety of critical services, there is a growing need to provide fault-tolerant (FT) services over internetworks, in a completely client-transparent fashion. We present HydraNet-FT, an infrastructure to dynamically replicate services across an internetwork and have the replicas provide a single fault-tolerant service access point to clients. HydraNet-FT uses the TCP communication protocol with a few modifications on the server side to allow one-to-many message delivery from a client to service replicas and many-to-one message delivery from the replicas to the client. A communication channel between the replicas provides atomicity and message ordering. A low-latency failure estimator is used to detect failures of servers in the system and to initiate fail-over mechanisms. An implementation and measurements on a local testbed show that the overhead of our scheme is reasonably small.

By the year 2002, it is anticipated that 1 billion people will be generating over 50% of the revenues of mobile communication systems from the packet data exchanges, (Internet activities, fax, voice mail and mobile office applications). However the highest growth of the data transfer volume will be produced from the Internet access, for which the existing GSM access will not be able to support. Additionally the mobile networks will have to support real-time applications like voice and multimedia based on IP as currently available on the fixed networks. This growing demand for higher bandwidth and real-time data packet services will have to be the main basic requirements for 3/sup rd/ generation (3G) mobile networks. It is important that an evolutionary approach should be adopted in modifying GSM networks in steps in order to enable the provision of the new services required. The first step in the evolution is through the addition of a GPRS backbone network with the benefits of an IP based packet network and the potential of WAP protocols for developing Internet content browsing (cellphone microbrowsers). The follow up from GPRS will be achieved from GPRS but with a higher access speeds and new processing techniques. GSM can also evolve to a 3G using yet another route, wideband CDMA, which is reviewed. This paper attempts to put the pieces of this puzzle together and review, in the process, various proposals required to launch the family of new generation mobile systems namely: the air interface technology, the core network structure, the new services, new technologies on offer and challenges awaiting all concerned.

As packet-mode communications become prevalent in upcoming generations of wireless communications systems, the need to investigate the performance of advanced adaptive signal processing techniques in such a context becomes exigent. We evaluate the impact of some of these schemes, namely the adaptive antenna, the adaptive equalization and the decorrelator multiuser detector, in a comparative performance assessment of an uplink joint CDMA/PRMA and a CDMR/ALOHA protocol. Besides the single resource allocation policy for voice-only traffic, the use of multislot and multicode multirate approaches for continuous bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate video (VBR) traffic transmission is considered. The presented results permit one to analyze the tradeoffs existing between performance and complexity among the different options, allowing then for an integrated design of the medium access control protocols and advanced receiver algorithms.

This paper presents an advanced version of a configurable demonstrator platform developed for a new wireless local area network called TUTWLAN. TUTWLAN is targeted for limited service areas with stationary or portable terminals. Applications range from simple wireless sensors to multimedia laptops. The network supports the different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of these applications. The improved development platform has been designed because of the restrictions discovered in the first prototype. The new platform provides better testing environment for developing Medium access Control (MAC) protocols for TUTWLAN and for designing embedded stand-alone applications. Furthermore, various other designs can be tested, for example hardware implementations of encryption algorithms. Both the new and the old prototypes consist of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), external memory modules for the DSP, and a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) circuit. The platform is connected to a radio module and can be attached to a host computer using Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus. Compared to the original platform, the new prototype contains more memory, a faster and larger FPGA, and a higher bit-rate radio.
