In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning methods as an efficient alternative to correlation in performing packet detection. Targeting satellite-based massive machine type communications and internet of things scenarios, our focus is on a common channel shared among a large number of terminals via a fully asynchronous ALOHA protocol to attempt delivery of short data packets. In this setup, we test the performance of two algorithms, neural networks and random forest, which are shown to provide substantial improvements over traditional techniques. Excellent performance is demonstrated in terms of detection and false alarm probability also in the presence of collisions among user transmissions. The ability of machine learning to extract further information from incoming signals is also studied, discussing the possibility to classify detected preambles based on the level of interference they undergo.

Mobile contact-less fingerprint scanners can be very important tools for the forensic investigation of crime scenes. To be admissible in court, data and the collection process must adhere to rules w.r.t. technology and procedures of acquisition, processing and the conclusions drawn from that evidence. Currently, no overall accepted benchmarking methodology is used to support some of the rules regarding the localisation, acquisition and pre-processing using contact-less fingerprint scanners. Benchmarking is seen essential to rate those devices according to their usefulness for investigating crime scenes. Our main contribution is a revised version of our extensible framework for methodological benchmarking of contact-less fingerprint scanners using a collection of extensible categories and items. The suggested main categories describing a contact-less fingerprint scanner are properties of forensic country-specific legal requirements, technical properties, application-related aspects, input sensory technology, pre-processing algorithm, tested object and materials. Using those it is possible to benchmark fingerprint scanners and describe the setup and the resulting data. Additionally, benchmarking profiles for different usage scenarios are defined. First results for all suggested benchmarking properties, which will be presented in detail in the final paper, were gained using an industrial device (FRT MicroProf200) and conducting 18 tests on 10 different materials.

The explosive growth of the network, end-host performances and their heterogeneities have resulted ever changing advancement and complexity of distributed computing environments. The users in such environment have not been provided a satisfactory service when they access the required objects. In this paper we focus on adaptive WWW content delivery, which is the most ubiquitous and popular way of information dissemination, primarily in the form of web-server, web-browser interaction. In these applications, we address controlling the Quality of delivery and time of access tradeoff of the WWW contents. We implement this as a httpa protocol, which is an adaptive transcoding methodology for embedded images in web pages, according to available channel bandwidth and other accessibility parameters at the client side. Compared to the conventional form of server side adaptive content delivery proposed in the literature, we propose a hybrid form of adaptation: client side progressive parameter estimation and server side transcoding of images, which is more scalable and flexible. Through experimental results we verify the performance of httpa.

Recently, a number of authentication schemes have been proposed for multimedia data such as images and sound data. They include both label based systems and semifragile watermarks. The main requirement for such authentication systems is that minor modifications such as lossy compression which do not alter the content of the data preserve the authenticity of the data, whereas modifications which do modify the content render the data not authentic. These schemes can be classified into two main classes depending on the model of image authentication they are based on. One of the purposes of this paper is to look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of these image authentication schemes and their relationship with fundamental limitations of the underlying model of image authentication. In particular, we study feature-based algorithms which generate an authentication tag based on some inherent features in the image such as the location of edges. The main disadvantage of most proposed feature-based algorithms is that similar images generate similar features, and therefore it is possible for a forger to generate dissimilar images that have the same features. On the other hand, the class of hash-based algorithms utilizes a cryptographic hash function or a digital signature scheme to reduce the data and generate an authentication tag. It inherits the security of digital signatures to thwart forgery attacks. The main disadvantage of hash-based algorithms is that the image needs to be modified in order to be made authenticatable. The amount of modification is on the order of the noise the image can tolerate before it is rendered inauthentic. The other purpose of this paper is to propose a multimedia authentication scheme which combines some of the best features of both classes of algorithms. This dissertation presents a solution to problems arising from the demand for fast information access and for sharing in real-time multimedia transmission over the Internet. Our solution exploits software agents that are placed throughout the network environment. These hierarchical video analysis agents process multimedia streams in real time, and automatically decompose and understand the multimedia content so as to facilitate information access and sharing. multimedia content contains both the perceptual content such as color, motion, or acoustic features and the conceptual content, which is specified based on concepts or semantics that can be expressed by text descriptions. Both types of contents are embedded simultaneously in multimedia streams, and usually are complementary to each other. This dissertation adaptively analyzes both kinds of video contents by combining mixed media cues from audio, video and text. First, a high-performance module for on-line video segmentation based on scene-change detection is developed. It serves as the first step of any video stream construction and analysis. To meet the high computational demand, our proposed video scene change detection algorithms are very efficient while maintaining high accuracy and recall rates for fast on-line video analysis. Second, the perceptual features of audio and video data are analyzed in a bottom-up manner and integrated so as to discriminate among the different events in any video stream effectively. An efficient decision-tree learning algorithm is used to induce a set of if-then rules which link perceptual features with the video conceptual semantic contents. These rules not only serve as a video classifier, but also guide on-line real-time video/audio feature extraction and data redistribution. A novel knowledge-based system, where knowledge is stored as learned rules, is proposed to serve as a video semantic inference/classification engine. Due to the dramatically increasing amount of multimedia contents in several application domains, effective and flexible solutions for distributed data indexation are essential. In the management of these multimedia contents, the indexing process is the most important resource consumer, in terms of data transfer over the network and CPU consumption. As result of our research, we located two points for reducing resource consumption: the limitation of multimedia content transfer over the network for indexing, as well as the reduction of multimedia indexing amount by employing only the most appropriate algorithms for performing indexation, only over the relevant contents. We present in this paper the solution developed in the context of the LINDO project for indexing multimedia content into a distributed system that originally address these two points by reducing as much as possible the resource consumption through (1) a distributed indexing technique that avoids multimedia transfer, (2) a flexible mechanism for selecting the indexing algorithms to be employed on each remote server, according to the multimedia content characteristics, its acquisition context and user queries history. © 2011 IEEE.

The extensive amount of video data stored on available media (hard and optical disks) necessitates video content analysis, which is a cornerstone for different user-friendly applications, such as, smart video retrieval and intelligent video summarization. This paper aims at finding a unified and efficient framework for court-net sports video analysis. We concentrate on techniques that are generally applicable for more than one sports type to come to a unified approach. To this end, our framework employs the concept of multi-level analysis, where a novel 3-D camera modeling is utilized to bridge the gap between the object-level and the scene-level analysis. The new 3-D camera modeling is based on collecting features points from two planes, which are perpendicular to each other, so that a true 3-D reference is obtained. Another important contribution is a new tracking algorithm for the objects (i.e. players). The algorithm can track up to four players simultaneously. The complete system contributes to summarization by various forms of information, of which the most important are the moving trajectory and real-speed of each player, as well as 3-D height information of objects and the semantic event segments in a game. We illustrate the performance of the proposed system by evaluating it for a variety of court-net sports videos containing badminton, tennis and volleyball, and we show that the feature detection performance is above 92% and events detection about 90%.

Virtual Private Network technology proved to be one of the most reliable technologies to provide data protection, confidentiality, integrity, data origin authentication, replay protection and access control in mobile computing. This paper presents the outcomes of research, design and development project on creation of secure communications in Web-based rich multimedia systems and performance analysis of encryption algorithms in cipher-block chaining mode in IPsec-based mobile virtual private networks.

Unlike early versions of MPEG, MPEG-7 is shifting from a data-compression standard to a multimedia content description standard. As a result, it will have much broader implications for the human-computer interaction research. There are countless ways that the MPEG-7 meta-data description framework can enhance users' experiences in accessing multimedia content. In this paper, we will report the algorithms that we developed for automatic generation of MPEG-7's description schemes (DSs): a video Table of contents DS to enhance active video browsing, a Summary DS to enable direct use of a meta-data producer's annotation, and a Still Image DS to allow interactive content-based image retrieval. Experimental results and user studies demonstrated the usefulness of MPEG-7's meta-data framework and effectiveness of our proposed automatic DS generation techniques.

The quantity of multimedia content available either through the traditional distribution channels, such as broadcast television, or through new platforms like the Internet, is continuously increasing. Tools for user-oriented access to desired information are thus needed. In this paper, we illustrate a novel fuzzy multimedia mining technique for genre characterisation, aimed at overcoming limitations of conventional crisp classification systems. Effective results in genre classification and characterisation are presented based on the extraction of structural and cognitive properties of the content.
