With their tremendous success in broadcasting entertainment services, digital satellite systems are rapidly being viewed as viable service delivery vehicles. In parallel, both the demand for Internet and multimedia services and the subsequent end-user demand for higher bandwidth are forcing network operators to search for mechanisms that can cost effectively provide high speed access to end-users. Network operators are seriously considering satellite based networks to offer broadband and multimedia services to supplement and enhance their existing terrestrial networks. One solution is based on a geosynchronous (GEO) satellite system equipped with on-board processing and switching. Allowing for a maximum number of simultaneous users is an important element of this system, hence requiring effective connection admission control (CAC) and bandwidth on demand (BOD) algorithms. In this paper, a CAC scheme is studied for the uplink segment of a broadband GEO satellite network with an on-board ATM-like switch. A MF-TDMA scheme is used for the uplink access. The CAC algorithm investigated is ATM-based with heterogeneous traffic traversing the satellite network. Performance evaluations of the CAC algorithm are done by detailed simulations. Connection blocking performance results are given for each type of traffic in the system.

The fast growth of multimedia information in image and video databases has triggered research on efficient retrieval methods. This paper deals with structural queries, a type of content-based retrieval where similarity is not defined on visual properties such as color and texture, but on object relations in space. We propose the application of heuristic algorithms which provide good, but not necessarily optimal, solutions in a pre-determined time period, and compare our approach with systematic search methods which are guaranteed to find optimal solutions but require exponential time in the worst case. The quality of the output is calculated using a relation framework which is an extension of Alien's relations. With this framework our methods can be applied in multiple resolutions and dimensions, thus covering a wide range of applications in spatial, multimedia and video systems.
In this paper new techniques are proposed for the handling of multimedia traffic in a hierarchical multi-tier system involving microcellular, macrocellular and satellite coverage. In this environment, efficient channe...

An effective analysis of Visual Objects appearing in still images and video flames is required in order to offer fine grain access to multimedia and audiovisual contents. In previous papers, we showed how our method for segmenting still images into visual objects could improve content-based image retrieval and video analysis methods. Visual Objects are used in particular for extracting semantic knowledge about the contents. However, low-level segmentation methods for still images are not likely to extract a complex object as a whole but instead as a set of several sub-objects. For example, a person would be segmented into three visual objects: a face, hair, and a body. In this paper, we introduce the concept of Composite Visual Object. Such an object is hierarchically composed of sub-objects called Component Objects. Production rules implementing some common sense knowledge are used to extract and label composite visual objects based on the output of our still image segmentation method, and to label the component objects with their semantic values. Composite visual objects of the database (e.g.: "persons") can then be searched for, possibly with some constraints on some of their components (e.g.: "only with a blue suit!").

Advances in digital storage and processing speed have made feasible the creation of large image databases with rapid access to individual items stored therein. The huge data sizes of images and the enormous number of images in a typical image database, coupled with inexact nature and subjective interpretations, have called for content-based retrieval systems. Fast and accurate retrievals are crucial for such systems to be used efficiently. This project provides an overview on the content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) techniques developed recently. Research directions and current available CBIR systems are presented. Important issues such as image segmentation algorithms, image logic structure and spatial relationships, spatial access methods and Query by Visual Example techniques (QVE) are discussed in detail. A prototype image retrieval system called IMAGESEEK is implemented using the JAVA programming language. The system enables the search of natural colour images and demonstrates the various ideas of Query by Visual Example techniques. A framework for CBIR systems is proposed. Experimental results of different QVE algorithms are discussed and compared with each other. The system has been successful in retrieving images from our sample data sets by their global and local colours. The user-friendly interface of IMAGESEEK allows the user to tailor and refine the query interactively by changing the retrieval algorithm, the threshold value, the weights, and the selected region of the query image. IMAGESEEK provides us a way to understand the key issues of CBIR techniques. It is a small but valuable component in the collection of multimedia retrieval systems.
With the demand for high capacity (multimedia) services, wideband CDMA (WCDMA) has become an attractive multiple access scheme for 3rd generation wireless systems. Coming with higher data rate, the application of WCDM...

The paper presents algorithms and principles for the management of large scale broadband multimedia services. For the implementation of these services, we use a network of distributed media servers, storing broadband media information e.g. audio and video that are streamed from the server to the connected clients. The problem studied in the paper is the managing of media content on a server network. We present the "Distributed Server Management System (DSMS)" that performs an efficient content and service management on the distributed servers. The DSMS allows one to collect access patterns from the users of the multimedia services and uses this knowledge for the solution of some combinatorial optimization algorithms that have to be solved for an efficient assignment of media assets. We present these optimization algorithms and evaluate their performance using some benchmark instances.

multimedia databases have attracted academic and industrial interest, and systems such as QBIC (content Based Image Retrieval system from IBM) have been released. Such systems are essential to effectively and efficiently use the existing large collections of image data in the modem computing environment. The aim of such systems is to enable retrieval of images based on their contents. This problem has brought together the (decades old) database and image processing communities. As parr of our research in this area, we are building a prototype CBIR system called CHITRA. This uses a four level data model, and we have defined a Fuzzy Object Query Language(FOQL)for this system. This system enables retrieval based on high level concepts, such as "retrieve images of MOUNTAINS", "retrieve images of MOUNTAINS and SUNSET". A problem faced in this system is processing of complex queries such as "retrieve all images that have similar color histogram AND similar texture to the given example image". Such problems have attracted research attention in recent times, notably by Fagin, Chaudhury and Gravano. Fagin has given an algorithm for processing such queries and provided a probabilistic upper bound for the complexity of the algorithm (which has been implemented in IBM's Garlic project). In this paper we provide theoretical (probabilistic) analysis of the expected cost of this algorithm. We propose a new multi-step query processing algorithm and prove that it performs better than Fagin's algorithm in all cases. Our algorithm requires fewer database accesses. We have evaluated both algorithms against an image database of 1000 images on our CHITRA system. We have used color histogram and Gabor texture features. Our analysis presented and the reported experimental results validate our algorithm (which has significant performance improvement).
