The paper addresses the dual problem of audio coding for compression and retrieval. Because of the sheer volume of multimedia data, much research effort has focused on coding techniques for the compression of this data. However, being able to store large amounts of data in a compact fashion has limited application if there is no meaningful way to access and interact with them. Traditionally, these two issues have been treated separately resulting in many problems for multimedia data management. The authors have proposed a solution to these problems for audio by developing a compact, perceptually based, structured audio representation that provides explicit support for content based retrieval, browsing and other interactions. In addition, the representation offers potential for compressed data storage. The paper outlines a coding scheme based on the representation and reports the compression results.

This paper presents an integrated framework for interactive content-based retrieval in video databases by means of visual queries. The proposed system incorporates algorithms for video shot detection, key-frame and shot selection, automated video object segmentation and tracking, and construction of multidimensional feature vectors using fuzzy classification of color, motion or texture segment properties. Retrieval is then performed in an interactive way by employing a parametric distance between feature vectors and updating distance parameters according to user requirements using relevance feedback. Experimental results demonstrate increased performance and flexibility according to user information needs.

Retrieving images in large databases involves either thematic or visual querying capabilities. We think that both approaches can be efficiently combined to provide a thematically and visually relevant retrieval. This paper deals with bi-modal access in image retrieval systems. Our approach relies on a corpus organisation based on both visual and thematic clustering, allowing access to non-indexed images. An adapted retrieval process has been designed to reformulate queries, taking into account users' judgements that deal with thematic and visual aspects of their information needs.

An audio-visual content analysis method is presented, which analyzes both auditory and visual information sources and accounts for their inter-relations and coincidence to extract high-level semantic information. Both shot-based and object-based access to the visual information is employed. Due to the temporal nature of video, time has to be accounted for. Thus, time-constrained video labelling functions are generated. Audio source parsing leads to the extraction of a speaker identity mapping function over time. Visual source parsing results in the extraction of a talking face shot mapping function over time. Integration of the audio and visual mappings constrained by interaction rules leads to more detailed video content descriptions and even partial detection of its context.

The Integrated multimedia Project (IMMP) studies interactive multimedia services and network technologies, addressing both residential and business users, focusing on the overlaps and synergy between the two. For this purpose, IMMP has set up and conducted a considerable number of trials with varying user profiles, network technologies, middleware components and applications. The trial network utilises multiple existing access networks such as Cable-TV and ISDN and connects to European ATM networks through the National Hosts. The IMMP consortium covers the complete interactive multimedia value chain by including network operators, service providers, equipment manufacturers, application developers and content providers. The paper presents project results with regard to market potential of interactive multimedia services, evaluation of different middleware technologies and end user feedback on the applications developed by IMMP.

content-based access to image databases relies on models which permit one to abstract images in some space of visual features. A large number of such models, addressing shape, texture, color and spatial arrangement features, have been proposed and experimented with. The fusion of multiple features within a single model is now being investigated as a way to increase the effectiveness of retrieval. In particular, the integration of color and spatial models is receiving growing interest. In this paper, we propose a representation which captures the spatial arrangement of the color sets of a picture, without talking into account their distribution in separate non-connected regions. A spatial modeling technique, which we call "weighted walkthroughs", is presented, and its suitability to support this representation is motivated and experimented on.

Similarity selections of objects in a very large database can be executed by an incremental search on the basis of their distance from a given point. To cope with this problem, indexing support and retrieval strategies, that are able to ensure good performance for different kinds of queries, need to be developed. In this work we propose incremental and approximate retrieval approaches for searching points in a d-dimensional metric space. Four new retrieval algorithms coupled with dynamical disk-based spatial structures are discussed and some experimental results are presented. In particular, two strategies named Chessboard and City Block respectively, implement approximate incremental searches on a grid file data structure and the others, heap queue and virtual tree, apply to hierarchical data structures such us the R-tree.

multimediasystems have emerged as one of the fastest growing segments of computing systems and thus need to be well integrated into a computer engineering curriculum. Fortunately the teaching and learning of multimediasystems can be aided with novel instructional techniques based on multimedia. The DVD project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is developing a unified set of instructional materials on the engineering techniques used in the design and test of hardware, software and networks for multimedia. This large project includes three facets: (1) multimedia instructional modules using web-linked digital video disks, (2) multimedia communication utilities to facilitate student interaction, and (3) multimedia component design projects. In this paper, we explain our approach to using multimedia as both content and instructional technology and briefly present preliminary results in each of the three facets.
