content-based access to image databases relies on models which permit one to abstract images in some space of visual features. A large number of such models, addressing shape, texture, color and spatial arrangement features, have been proposed and experimented with. The fusion of multiple features within a single model is now being investigated as a way to increase the effectiveness of retrieval. In particular, the integration of color and spatial models is receiving growing interest. In this paper, we propose a representation which captures the spatial arrangement of the color sets of a picture, without talking into account their distribution in separate non-connected regions. A spatial modeling technique, which we call "weighted walkthroughs", is presented, and its suitability to support this representation is motivated and experimented on.

Similarity selections of objects in a very large database can be executed by an incremental search on the basis of their distance from a given point. To cope with this problem, indexing support and retrieval strategies, that are able to ensure good performance for different kinds of queries, need to be developed. In this work we propose incremental and approximate retrieval approaches for searching points in a d-dimensional metric space. Four new retrieval algorithms coupled with dynamical disk-based spatial structures are discussed and some experimental results are presented. In particular, two strategies named Chessboard and City Block respectively, implement approximate incremental searches on a grid file data structure and the others, heap queue and virtual tree, apply to hierarchical data structures such us the R-tree.

multimedia systems have emerged as one of the fastest growing segments of computing systems and thus need to be well integrated into a computer engineering curriculum. Fortunately the teaching and learning of multimedia systems can be aided with novel instructional techniques based on multimedia. The DVD project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is developing a unified set of instructional materials on the engineering techniques used in the design and test of hardware, software and networks for multimedia. This large project includes three facets: (1) multimedia instructional modules using web-linked digital video disks, (2) multimedia communication utilities to facilitate student interaction, and (3) multimedia component design projects. In this paper, we explain our approach to using multimedia as both content and instructional technology and briefly present preliminary results in each of the three facets.

In this paper new techniques are proposed for the handling of multimedia traffic in a hierarchical multi-tier system involving microcellular, macrocellular and satellite coverage. In this environment, efficient channel assignment and hand-off management techniques become critical issues to fully exploit the benefits of the multi-layered architecture. The traffic flow control between layers has to maximise the system capacity without degrading the traffic QoS. This task is particularly hard when in the presence of multimedia calls, which ask for large amount of bandwidth and are characterised by the combination of traffic of different nature. The proposed algorithms differ from the traditional ones as they adopt a multi-bearer transport approach to carry multimedia traffic over the air-interface, coupled with suitable strategies for the allocation of each traffic component at the best layer. This leads to better resource utilisation and multimedia QoS guarantees, while minimising new call blocking and hand-off failure probabilities.

At present it is very easy to distribute and copy multimedia content. Digital watermarking is a technical solution to the copyright problem. In its basic form a digital watermark is a small signal added to a multimedia asset and carrying sufficient data to provide IPR (Intellectual Properly Right) protection. In the European Esprit project VIVA (Visual Identity Verification Auditor) this digital watermarking technology is used to investigate, design and demonstrate a professional broadcast surveillance system. A real-time digital watermark embedder and detector for broadcast monitoring are implemented in software on a powerful DSP (digital signal processor). In this paper a short overview of the watermarking algorithms and their implementation is given. Measurements are done in a laboratory environment under real-time conditions and are very convincing. The experimental results reveal that the watermark can survive much common processing in the broadcast chain.

In this paper, an intelligent transmission controller (ITC) with multi-QoS medium access control (MAC) algorithm for TDMA/PRMA wireless multimedia communication systems is studied. A mini-slot technique is adopted in the proposed MAC protocol for reducing contention cost, and these mini-slots are further partitioned into multiple MAC regions where various MAC regions are for access requests coming from different QoS (quality-of-service)-class users with their respective access probabilities. Meanwhile, ITC is designed to adaptively adjust these MAC regions and access probabilities to enhance the MAC efficiency under QoS constraints. ITC mainly contains a neural/fuzzy transmission controller which has PRNN (pipeline recurrent neural network) traffic predictors, a fuzzy MAC threshold estimator, and a fuzzy access controller. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-QoS MAC algorithm with ITC can guarantee QoS requirement and has less data packet delay and higher achievable system utilization, compared to previous PRMA, IPRMA and FRMA protocols.

We present a generic architecture for content based retrieval of images, which can be extended to the requirements of large distributed and heterogeneous collections. The system is modeled as a multi agent system where an autonomous search agent encapsulates independent image retrieval algorithms. An optimal team of agents is dynamically selected for every retrieval problem. A flexible protocol allows for dynamic addition of search agents incorporating new pattern recognition techniques. These agents are coded as mobile agents, so that they can travel across a wide area network and analyze the documents at their sources. The separation of physical image forms and their logical structural composition allows the search agents to operate over heterogeneous repositories. A prototype implementation validates the effectiveness of the architecture.

The paper reports on an experienced and evaluated three layer architectural solution for co-operative database access in real use environment. It looks for mediator software independence from idiosyncrasies of user application interfaces and specific database schemata. The cornerstone to implement this architecture is a set of relational databases and views manipulated by a Relational Inference Machine-RIM. Conceptually It is supported by a semantic model implemented as a modelling technique we have named content Semantics-CS-which supports pragmatic concept ontology to be expressed as contextualized terms in well-defined semantic domains. Several public databases are daily accessed by mediation services working over millions of data records stored in large databases.

The ESPRIT project DiVAN (EP 24956) aims at the building of a distributed audio-visual library system for TV broadcasters and video archives owners. The DiVAN system provides facilities to effectively, digitize, annotate, organize, store and access raw material in a coherent content-based manner, on top of high-speed wide area communication networks. Also, the project aims to demonstrate and assess the applicability and acceptability of the proposed system, through field trials on a DiVAN-based infrastructure interconnecting the archives of the users of the partnership, i.e. INA, RAI, and ERT. The consortium consists of industrial partners (i.e. INTRACOM, TECMATH), research institutes (i.e. ICS-FORTH, INRIA, Tech. Un. of Darmstadt) and users (i.e. Institut National de l'Audiovisuel-INA, Radiotelevisione Italiana-RAI and Greek National Broadcaster-ERT).

With the demand for high-capacity (multimedia) services, wideband CDMA (WCDMA) has become an attractive multiple access scheme for third-generation wireless systems. Coming with higher data rate, the application of WCDMA brings with it new challenges in terms of multiple access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI) suppression due to the fact that compared to the 'regular' CDMA, the delay spread is no longer only a few chips. Most of the literature on multiuser detection so far has focused on algorithms which, due to high computational/hardware complexity, are unsuitable for large delay spread channels. In this paper, we present an adaptive symbol-based signal separator based on multishot matched filtering which is suitable for the asynchronous large delay spread fading channel characteristics.
