Video content parsing is possible when one has an a priori model of a video's structure based on domain knowledge. This paper presents work on using domain knowledge to parse content of news video programs. Approaches to locating and identifying frame structure models based on temporal and spatial structure of news video data, along with algorithms to apply these models in parsing news video, have been developed and are presented in detail in this paper. Experimental results are also discussed in detail to evaluate the approaches and algorithms. Finally, proposals for future work are summarized.< >

Algebraic video uses a set of basic operations on video segments to create a desired video stream. The video algebra consists of operations for temporally and spatially combining video segments, and for attaching attributes to these segments. Video streams of interest can be discovered with video queries that describe desired attributes. Unlike previous approaches, algebraic video permits video expressions to be nested in arbitrarily deep hierarchies. It also permits video segments to inherit attributes by context. Experience with a prototype algebraic video system suggests that algebraic video can be used to create new video presentations from existing video libraries with query based discovery and algebraic combination of video segments of interest.< >

Currently, most data accessed on large servers is structured data stored in traditional databases. Networks are LAN based and clients range from simple terminals to powerful workstations. The user is corporate and the application developer is an MIS *** the introduction of broadband communications to the home and better than 100-to-1 compression techniques, a new form of network-based computing is emerging. Structured data is still important, but the bulk of data becomes unstructured: audio, video, news feeds, etc. The predominant user becomes the consumer. The predominant client device becomes the television set. The application developer becomes the storyboard developer, director, or the video production *** Oracle Media Server supports access to all types of conventional data stored in Oracle relational and text databases. In addition, we have developed a real-time stream server that supports storage and playback of real-time audio and video data. The Media Server also provides access to data stored in file systems or as binary large objects (images, executables, etc.)The Oracle Media Server provides a platform for distributed client-server computing and access to data over asymmetric real-time networks. A service mechanism allows applications to be split such that client devices (set-top boxes, personal digital assistants, etc.) can focus on presentation, while backend services running in a distributed server complex, provide access to data via messaging or lightweight RPC (Remote Procedure Call).

Video-on-demand represents a key demonstrative application for enabling multimedia technology in communication, database, and interface research. This application requires solving a number of diverse technical problems including the data synchronization problem for time-dependent data delivery. In this paper we describe the general requirements of video-on-demand and introduce a system supporting content-based retrieval and playback for the structure and content of digital motion pictures. In our model we capture domain-specific information for motion pictures and provide access to individual scenes of movies through queries on a temporal database. We describe our implementation of this service using existing workstation and storage technology.

The authors explore the scope of possibilities of the implementation of molecular biology algorithms on a reconfigurable hardware based architecture. In order to demonstrate both the flexibility and power of reconfigurable hardware, two algorithms have been implemented on an architecture constituted by 23 FPGAs (Xilinx XC3090) and 4MB of SRAM. These two algorithms have been chosen because of their biological relevance. One is a classical dynamic programming algorithm that is implemented as a monodimensional systolic array. The other, as described in this paper, is based on pattern detection in long sequences of letters. This algorithm has been implemented as a rapid content addressable memory. It is important to stress the fact that these performances are achieved thanks to the use of the entire possibilities of reconfigurability. This enables one to exploit to the full each level of parallelism of the algorithm. The concept of reconfigurable hardware perfectly suits the needs of molecular biology. The performances demonstrated in this paper are several magnitude orders greater than a 40 MIPS workstation.< >
