A major thrust in modern military communication systems is to integrate all of the existing and future propagation media resources in a communication system with the objective of providing more reliable, survivable, enduring communication system performance in a stressed environment. An analysis of the objectives, including survivability, network throughput, and delay, to be achieved by integrating communication resources to create a multimedia network, is presented. Given the objectives of integrating resources, an architecture and a suite of algorithms are described which provide a means to use (integrate) any and all media resources, including external networks, multiple access, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint media. A strategy for providing integrated services over heterogeneous links, including radio links, is described. A type-of-service routing algorithm (and its associated topology update strategy) is described which individually computes routes for circuit-switched traffic and various types of packet-switched traffic. The packet-switched traffic includes datagram types which range from delay-sensitive to delay-insensitive and network layer virtual circuits. Theoretical performance results which illustrate general principles are presented, and simulation results are shown for some small networks.

A signature file acts us a filtering mechanism to reduce the amount of data that needs to be searched during query evaluation. Even though several techniques for organizing and searching signature files have been proposed in literature, they have serious liimitations when applied to multimedia dutubases, where integrated access methods to text and image content are neeeded. A new signature technique, called Quick Filter, is proposed in the paper. According to this technique, signatures are divided into partitions, each of which holds signatures sharing the same characteristic key. As a result, it is possible to determine if the signatures in u partition sutisfi a query by merely examining the key. Partitions not matching the key need not be searched. This method is based on dynamic hashing since signatures are hashed into partitions according to the keys and the file size, computed algorithmical from the signatures. Implementation of this technique is illustrated using an example and is veriJed by analytical performance evaluation. The result is a signature technique which satisfies the requirements for access methods in multimedia databases: dynamic@ with respect to insertions and updates, good query processing performance on large databases for highweighf queries. © ACM 1990.

This paper presents a design strategy for efficient and comprehensive parallel testing of both Random access Memory (RAM) and content Addressable Memory (CAM). Based on this design for testability approach, parallel testing algorithms for CAMs and RAMs are developed for a broad class of pattern sensitive faults. The resulting test procedures are significantly more efficient than previous approaches. For example, the design for testability strategy allows an entire w word CAM to be read in just one operation with a resulting speed up in testing as high as w. In the case of an n bit RAM, the improvement in test efficiency is by a factor of O(√n). overall reduction in testing time is considerable for large size memories.

A description is given of issues related to the design and performance of a multimedia information server for an office enviornment. multimedia documents are composed of text, image, voice and attribute information. The authors describe the multimedia document structure, their internal representation and their presentation form. content addressibility in this environment is achieved by specifying conditions on attributes, text, images, and document presentation form. Query reformulation, multimedia document formation in this environment, and communication with the outside world are also discussed. Archived documents are stored in a centralized server. Users submit their queries in their local workstations using a local area network. The server retrieves the qualifying documents and returns them to the users. The authors analyze the performance of various access methods for multimedia documents that reside in the server.

We describe an experimental multimedia information system for an office environment which is being developed in the University of Toronto. multimedia messages are composed of text, image, voice and attribute information. We discuss issues related to internal representation, presentation and communication with the outside world, content addressability in the various data types, user interface and access methods.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the COST Action 2102 and euCognition supported international school on Multimodal Signals: 'Cognitive and Algorithmic Issues' held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, in April 2008. The 34 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from participants’ contributions and invited lectures given at the workshop. The volume is organized in two parts; the first on Interactive and Unsupervised Multimodal systems contains 14 papers. The papers deal with the theoretical and computational issue of defining algorithms, programming languages, and determinist models to recognize and synthesize multimodal signals. These are facial and vocal expressions of emotions, tones of voice, gestures, eye contact, spatial arrangements, patterns of touch, expressive movements, writing patterns, and cultural differences, in anticipation of the implementation of intelligent avatars and interactive dialogue systems that could be exploited to improve user access to future telecommunication services. The second part of the volume, on Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Signals, presents 20 original studies devoted to the modeling of timing synchronisation between speech production, gestures, facial and head movements in human communicative expressions and on their mutual contribution for an effective communication.

The Web is a globalinformationspace consistingoflinked documents andlinked data. As the Web continues to grow and new technologies, modes of interaction, and applications are being developed, the task of the Semantic Web is to unlock the power of information available on the Web into a common semantic inf- mation space and to make it available for sharing and processing by automated tools as well as by people. Right now, the publication of large datasets on the Web, the opening of data access interfaces, and the encoding of the semantics of the data extend the current human-centric Web. Now, the Semantic Web c- munity is tackling the challenges of how to create and manage Semantic Web content, how to make Semantic Web applications robust and scalable, and how to organize and integrate information from di?erent sources for novel uses. To foster the exchange of ideas and collaboration, the International Semantic Web conference brings together researchers and practitioners in relevant disciplines such as arti?cial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, natural language processing, soft c- puting, and human–computer interaction.
