Peer to peer and distributed systems are generally susceptible to sybil attacks. Online social networks (OSNs), due to their fat user base and open access nature are also prone to such attacks. Current state-of-art algorithms for sybil attack detection make use of the inherent social graph created among registered users of OSN service. They rely on the inherent trust relationship among these users. No effort is made to combine other characteristic behavior of sybil users with properties of social graph of OSNs to improve detection accuracy of sybil attacks. Sybil identities are also used as gateways for spreading spam content in OSNs. The proposed approach exploits this behavior of sybil users to improve detection accuracy of existing sybil detection algorithms. In the proposed approach, content generated/published by each user is used along with the topological properties of the social graph of registered users. A machine learning model is used for assigning a fractional value called "trust value" which denotes the amount of legitimate content generated by the user. A modification to sybil detection algorithm is proposed which makes use of the trust value of each user to improve the accuracy of detecting a sybil identity. Real dataset from Facebook is crawled and used for analysis and experiments. Analytical results show the superiority of proposed solution. Results are compared with SybilGuard and SybilShield which shows ~14% decrease in false positive rates with very minimal effect on acceptance rate or false negative rate of the sybil detection algorithms. Also, the proposed modification does not affect the performance of existing sybil detection algorithms and can be implemented in a distributed manner.

The European (EU)-based industry for non-leisure games (Applied Games, AGs or formally called serious games) is an emerging business. As such it is still fragmented and needs to achieve critical mass to compete globally. Nevertheless, its growth potential is widely recognized and even suggested to exceed the growth potential of the leisure games market. To become competitive the relevant applied gaming communities require support by fostering the generation of innovation potential. The European project Realizing an Applied Gaming Ecosystem (RAGE) (Netvision 2015) is aiming at supporting this challenge. RAGE will help to seize these opportunities by making available an interoperable set of advanced Applied Game (AG) technology assets, as well as proven practices of using asset-based AGs in various real-world contexts. As described in (Salman, Heutelbeck, et al. 2015a), RAGE will finally provide a centralized access to a wide range of applied gaming software modules, relevant information, knowledge and community services, and related scientific documents, taxonomies, media, and educational resources within an online community portal called the RAGE Ecosystem. This Knowledge Management Ecosystem (KM-ES) is based on an integrational, user-centered approach of Knowledge Management (KM) and Innovation Processes in the shape of a service-based implementation (Becker et al. 2015). In this paper, we will describe the integration of the Scientific Publication and Presentation Platforms (SPPs) Mendeley (Netvision 2016e) and SlideShare (Netvision 2016l) into the RAGE Ecosystem. This will support information, User Generated content (UGC), and knowledge sharing, as well as persistency of social interaction threads and Know-how transfer within Social Networking Sites (SNSs) and Groupware systems (GWSs) that are connected to the RAGE Ecosystem. Cloud computing environments provide storage capacity, processing power, and other computational resources in a flexible way, enabling fast adaptation to highly dynamic workloads. multimedia services, such as video streaming, are examples of applications that can use cloud computing to leverage their provisioning capacity. This way, it is possible to offer a large variety of multimedia content in many formats, so the users will be able to watch videos as they wish, with a proper resolution and quality, according to his preferences and connection speed. Private infrastructures for Video on Demand (VoD) and live video streaming are especially useful for e-learning on large corporations, universities, and governments. Analytical models are effective tools to evaluate the availability of software, hardware, and other computational resources. In this paper, we study a VoD service hosted in a private cloud computing environment. We present availability models considering the VoD streaming server components that are necessary for viewers access. Hierarchical modeling techniques are used to deal with the complexity of representing such system. Sensitivity analysis is used to determine the parameters that cause greatest impact on the availability, identifying which components require attention when attempting to achieve increased availability in a system. The proposed models are useful for planning private cloud infrastructures for VoD services.

Recent decades have witnessed a swift development in network structures like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems, offering advantages such as significantly reducing the set-up running cost for the content providers and providing end users data access within very short time. However, today's P2P distribution systems are severely abused by illegal re-distributions, which not only result in heavy financial losses to the media industry, but also hinders the legal commercial use of P2P content distribution systems. Thus, in order to counteract the threat of illegal re-distribution of media files over P2P systems, the media industry has sought protection from technological solutions, which are designed to prevent copyright infringement. However, the incorporation of the content protection techniques within P2P systems poses serious privacy threats to end users. Although the privacy desired by a P2P user typically includes anonymity and unlinkability, complete anonymity cannot be provided to him/her since it creates a conflict between the basic starting points of preserving interests of the content provider and protecting the privacy rights of the user. Various researchers have examined the challenges characterizing these systems from diverse viewpoints, proposing strategic solutions. This paper presents a survey of integration components (i.e. content protection and privacy-preservation techniques) and recent proposals of P2P content distribution systems that incorporates both integrants. In addition, different challenges and open research issues are pointed out.

This paper proposes two algorithms adopted in a prototype network architecture, for optimal selection of multimedia content delivery methods, as well as balanced delivery load, by exploiting a novel resource prediction engine. The proposed architecture exploits both algorithms for the prediction of future multimedia services demands, by providing the ability to keep optimal the distribution of the streaming data, among content Delivery Networks, cloud-based providers and Home Media Gateways. In addition, the prediction of the upcoming fluctuations of the network, provides the ability to the proposed network architecture, achieving optimized Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for the end users. Both algorithms were evaluated to establish their efficiency, towards effectively predicting future network traffic demands. The experimental results validated their performance and indicated fields for further research and experimentation.

The common approaches to academic integrity in the e-learning environment are resource-intensive and require technology and/or dedicated invigilation staff to monitor assessment activities. These approaches are observational and often external to the learning spaces where the majority of the instructional content resides. Authentic assessments such as discussions, projects and portfolios may not always undergo the same scrutiny as high-stakes examinations and therefore differ in the level of identity and authorship assurance they provide. In this paper, we propose an integrated approach to enhancing academic integrity of e-assessments. The approach is based on behavioral biometrics and aided by machine-learning techniques. It provides continuous identity and authorship assurance throughout the learning activities within the existing learning space. It can be applied to measure the degree of learner collaboration with peers and interaction with the course content, concurrently verifying learner identity and validating authorship of the academic artifacts. We present the preliminary results and discuss future directions.

There are many recent revolutionary technologies and advances in wireless communication and networking that changed the lives of millions of people around us. The wide spread of the Internet and the smart mobile devices which is equipped with wireless technologies to access the Internet, enabled people to contact each other regardless of their geographic location. These communications involve sharing and transferring sensitive information that must be protected. Therefore, there is an increasing need to secure the individuals and organizations data which is considered a big challenge in communication and networking systems nowadays. The cryptographic algorithms are used to provide many security services to secure the communication channels and networks such as authentication, data integrity and confidentiality. But, recently, there are cyber attacks on these crypto-functions and their implementations, mainly Side Channel Attacks. So, compromising the security of these algorithms implies compromising the security of the communication systems that are using them. Among the most known asymmetric encryption algorithms is the Elliptic Curve Cryptography which is used to protect sensitive data in many financial and government applications. In this research, we present most recent Side channel attacks on Elliptic Curve Cryptography. Also, we discuss the suitable effective countermeasures used to protect from these cyber attacks towards obtaining more secure communication systems.

Many digital file formats, which are used every day for different purposes or in different domains, are serialized as simple text. As plain text is a very simple serialization format, numerous tools, which provide general functionality for text, can thus be used for lots of different file formats. It is one reason why the principle of collaboration can easily be ported from one domain to another one as long as the exchange format is text-based. For binary, and consequently more complex formats, specific tools are usually necessary. In this paper, we present an approach that allows for the creation and textual serialization of videos that are composed of other centrally provided videos. We further introduce a library implementation that enables general-purpose tools to constitute the technical basis for collaborative video editing in an on- and offline setting.

Popularly used to distribute a variety of multimedia content items in today's Internet, HTTP-based web content delivery still suffers from various content delivery failures, including server failures [1], network failures [2] and routing failures [3]. Hindered by the expensive deployment cost, the conventional CDN can not deploy as many edge servers as possible to successfully deliver content items to all users under these delivery failures. In this paper, we propose a joint CDN and peer-assisted web content delivery framework to address the delivery failure problem. Different from conventional peer- assisted approaches for web content delivery, which mainly focus on alleviating the CDN servers' bandwidth load, we study how to use a browser-based peer-assisted scheme, namely WebRTC, to resolve content delivery failures. To this end, we carry out large-scale measurement studies on how users access and view webpages. Our measurement results demonstrate the challenges (e.g., peers stay on a webpage extremely short) that can not be directly solved by conventional P2P strategies, and some important webpage viewing patterns (e.g., predictability of users' webpage viewing time). Due to these unique characteristics, WebRTC peers open up new possibilities for helping the web content delivery, coming with the problem of how to utilize the dynamic resources efficiently. We formulate the peer selection that is the critical strategy in our framework, as an optimization problem, and design a heuristic algorithm based on the mea- surement insights to solve it. Our simulation experiments driven by the traces from Tencent QZone, one of the most popular social service platforms in China, demonstrate the effectiveness of our design: compared with non-peer-assisted strategy and random peer selection strategy, our design significantly improves the successful relay ratio of web content items under network failures, e.g., our design improves the content download ratio up to 60% even when

In the Urban Internet of Things (IoT), devices and systems are interconnected at the city scale to provide innovative services to the citizens. However, the traffic generated by the sensing and processing systems may overload local access networks. A coexistence problem arises where concurrent applications mutually interfere and compete for available resources. This effect is further aggravated by the multiple scales involved and heterogeneity of the networks supporting the urban IoT. One of the main contributions of this paper is the introduction of the notion of content-oriented cognitive interference control in heterogeneous local access networks supporting computing and data processing in the urban IoT. A network scenario where multiple communication technologies, such as Device-to-Device and Long Term Evolution (LTE), is considered. The focus of the present paper is on city monitoring applications, where a video data stream generated by a camera system is remotely processed to detect objects. The cognitive network paradigm is extended to dynamically shape the interference pattern generated by concurrent data streams and induce a packet loss trajectory compatible with video processing algorithms. Numerical results show that the proposed cognitive transmission strategy enables a significant throughput increase of interfering applications for a target accuracy of the monitoring application.
