The access to Online Social Networks (OSN) and to media shared over these platforms account for around 20% of today's mobile Internet traffic. For mobile device users, the access to media content and specifically videos is still challenging and costly. Mobile contracts usually have a data cap and connection qualities can vary greatly, depending on the cellular network coverage. Prefetching mechanisms that fetch content items beforehand, in times when the mobile device is connected to a WiFi network, have a high potential to address these problems. Yet, such a mechanism can only be effective if relevant content can be predicted with a high accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, an analysis of content properties and their potential for prediction are presented. An initial user study with 14 Facebook users running an app on their mobile device was conducted. The results show that video consumption is very diverse across the users. This work discusses the evaluation setup, the data analysis, and their potential to define an effective prefetching algorithm.

This paper is on the scope of the use of virtual learning environments in higher education institutions. The aim is to understand between the school year of 2009/2010 to 2013/2014 the use of a virtual learning environment of a Portuguese higher education institution in terms of publishing of contents by teachers, the type of contents published, the students access to these contents as well as the exploration of relationships between published content and access to these contents. The data were obtained by document analysis, using databases to retrieve the records of publication of contents and access, during the study period. The contents published by teachers were integrated into categories: PDF, Text Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Images, Compressed Files and multimedia. Most of the contents were published in PDF format.

Today, web-based education technologies such as e-learning, distance learning, online course, virtual classrooms and interactive learning are commonly used outside the traditional education systems. Massive Open Online Courses, which were adopted with the evolution of these systems in 2008, have become the most popular education systems of today and access to a very large audiences with many modules such as video courses, documents, interactive learning activities and quizzes in themselves. In this study, a machine learning and big data based approach has been presented for the mentioned online education systems. With the proposed approach, it is aimed to develop course contents in online education, offer student-specific learning activities, perform an analysis according to criteria such as age, gender, occupation, education level and location, and to obtain decisions with strategic importance such as determining the course prerequisites to be developed by big data-based analysis.

This paper presents a fuzzy association rule-based intrusion detection and prevention (FAR IDP) system that is implemented within an e-commerce Web service-based application. This system compares the effectiveness and efficiency of using 20 fuzzy association rules compared to 366 fuzzy associative patterns (FAP) to determine whether to definitely grant access to normal transaction, probably deny access for suspicious transaction or certainly deny access to transactions which may contain malicious inputs or XML content. Experimental results from our FAR IDP system have demonstrated that both rules-based and pattern-based algorithms are able to detect, prevent and predict Web service attacks such as SQL injection, XML injection, DoS and SOAP oversized close to real-time, with detection accuracy of not lower than 99%. There is also a slight difference in terms of time;the transaction time for FAP is almost doubled that of FAR's in ms. Additionally, with a transaction time of less than 0.25ms and a detection accuracy of greater than 99%, our FAR IDP has outperformed many other fuzzy and Web service-based IDP systems.

Steganography is a technique used to hide encrypted messages within multimedia files. This technique was recently reported to have been used by Osama Bin Laden to communicate with terrorist cells within the United States, and, thus, prevention of the transmission of steganographic content is of great interest to those interested in information security. Methods of steganalysis have been developed that attempt to detect files that contain steganographic content. However, authors of these methods admit that they are not viable for production or have been shown to be defeated by newer advances in steganography. This article illustrates an innovation in which algorithms neutralize any hidden messages without significantly detracting from the underlying integrity of the multimedia files and without the need for prior detection of steganographic content.

Emerging multimedia applications demands content-based video processing. Video has to be segmented into objects for content-based processing. A number of video object segmentation algorithms have been proposed such as semiautomatic and automatic. Semiautomatic methods adds burden to users and also not suitable for some applications. Automatic segmentation systems are still a challenge, although they are required by many applications. The proposed work aims at contributing to identify the gaps that are present in the current segmentation system and also to give the possible solutions to overcome those gaps so that the accurate and efficient video segmentation system can be developed.

There are many marine life around the world where it is essential to have proper documentation for future records. Many information retrieval systems for marine science today require text input from user and can only be accessed online. Therefore, people who do not know the name of the marine species or do not have Internet access cannot search using the systems. Responding to this important need, this work aims to develop a content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system for marine invertebrates based on colour and shape features. With the CBIR system for marine invertebrates, users can use the system to look for marine invertebrates' species instead of using traditional methods of searching such as using books and encyclopedias. Users can easily upload the image of marine invertebrate that they want to search into the system and the system will retrieve all the other similar images of marine invertebrates along with their description. All the system interface's buttons, icons and text were designed in a way where any user can easily understand and further learn to operate the system themselves. Based on the retrieval effectiveness experiment and questionnaire-based survey, the proposed CBIR system for marine invertebrates is shown to be effective, help users search similar images of marine invertebrates, provide concise information on marine invertebrate's species for learning purposes, and is reliable and user-friendly.

Proven to be a viable and cost effective solution for ubiquitous internet access, wireless access network have proliferated at homes, offices, and cafes all over the globe. Being placed at the very edge of the computer network, with increasingly powerful computational ability, wireless access points are more and more suitable for deploying configurable and personalized services for mobile clients. In this paper we propose an intelligent wireless service framework over enhanced wireless access points (referred to as Smart Wireless access Point) that prefetch and aggregate web contents on the wired side based on user profiles and delivery it to the user in a wireless network environment. We modify the source code of browser to enhance its data collection capabilities and develop some practical smartphone applications on the mobile client-side. Additionally, we perform some caching strategy and algorithms when a user have created considerable usage data or rated enough information. Measuring the download latency shows that DNS caching and content caching yields significant improvements in page load time. Prefetching mechanism, recommend system and some rich featured wireless local applications all benefit users much.

Fast Internet connectivity and billions of web sites have made World Wide Web an attractive place for people to use the Internet in their day-to-day life. Educational institutes provide the Internet access to students mainly for educational purposes. However, most of the time, students are allowed to access any content on the web. Therefore, the full bandwidth is consumed due to access to non-educational content such as streaming non-educational videos and downloading large image files, etc. Prevention of Internet usage on non-education content is practically difficult due to various reasons. Usually, this is implemented in the proxy server through maintaining a blacklist of URLs. Most of the time, this is a static list of URLs. With the fast growing content on the World Wide Web maintaining a static blacklist is impractical. In this paper, we propose a methodology to generate dynamic blacklist of URLs using machine learning techniques. We experimentally investigate several machine learning algorithms to predict whether the URL in concern is educational or non-educational. The results of the initial experiments show that linear support vector machines can be used to predict the content with 98.9% accuracy.

During recent years, the use of analysis and dynamical system modeling methods to solve biological and medical problems has considerably increased. The application of these techniques to physiological systems can generate a deep and diversified understanding of the general nature of these systems and of the complex processes that govern them. Medical Engineering studies the application of engineering and technology concepts to the development of instrumentation, materials, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, artificial organs, and other medical equipment. A content based approach is followed for medical images of CBIR. The purpose of this study is to access the stability of these methods for medical image retrieval. The methods used texture based retrieval GLCM (gray level co-occurrence matrix) and local binary pattern (LBP). The work developed in this paper establishes a contribution to modeling and simulation efforts in soft sciences, such as biomedical engineering. Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) constitute yet another qualitative reasoning paradigm. Fuzzy controllers have successfully been applied to various medical systems, and they therefore deserve to be mentioned in this context. Some of the more important contributions to the field of fuzzy systems as related to medical systems have been obtained and reported. To this end, a qualitative methodology based on inference and fuzziness is proposed that addresses some of the methodology inherent in dealing with these types of systems. To illustrate the results obtained in this research effort, two kinds of feature extraction technique of biomedical image retrieval are being used and better performance is observed using Fuzzy Inference system with 83.33 value of sensitivity as compared to ANN.
