For OFDM channels, we propose a content-aware subcarrier allocation scheme for multiuser video transmission that maximizes user perceived quality while minimizing power consumption. The scheme utilizes utility function-based genetic algorithms to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. It significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of perceived quality and consumed power.

The advent of the digital television in Brazil has allowed users to access interactive channels. Once interactive channels are available, the users are able to find multimedia content such as movies and breaking news programs, to send and/or receive emails, to access interactive applications and also other contents. In this context, a high demand of requests from users is expected. Therefore, from the content provider's point of view, the determination of transmission parameters is needed in order to ensure the best quality of transmission to every user. The aforementioned identification problem is modelled as an optimization problem and a solution procedure based on metaheuristic techniques is proposed. Genetic Algorithm and Tabu Search metaheuristics are employed separately and coupled in a hybrid scheme to define the best transmission policy, optimizing the transmission parameters, such as audio and video transmission rates. Based on the experimental results, the hybrid algorithm has produced better solutions which meet the quality requirements.

This paper presents the optimization of the reorganisation algorithms of hybrid index structures supporting multimedia search conditions. multimedia in this case refers to, on the one hand, the support of high dimensional feature spaces and, on the other, the mix of data of multiple types. We will use an approach which may typically be found in geographic information retrieval (GIR) systems combined of two-dimensional geographical points in combination with textual data. Yet, the dimensions of the points may be arbitrarily set. Currently, most of these access methods implemented for the use in database centric application domains are validated regarding their retrieval efficiency in simulation based environments. Most of the structures and experiments only use synthetic validation in an artificial setup. Additionally, the focus of these tests is to validate the retrieval efficiency. We implemented such an indexing method in a realistic database management system and noticed an unacceptable runtime behaviour of reorganisation algorithms. Hence, a structured and iterative optimization procedure is set up to make hybrid index structures suitable for the use in real world application scenarios. The final outcome is a set of algorithms providing efficient approaches for reorganisations of access methods for hybrid data spaces.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has become increasingly affordable in the market and has been reduced to smaller sizes, providing an entry level UAV for any beginner. For this paper we have utilized the GoPro action camera as the chosen camera, since DJI has an established gimbal for it and also the fact that the GoPro setup is considered the entry level, which is available to anyone and also produces good quality. Recent research collaboration has identified built heritage in Malaysia with a scope of being built after the nation's independence between 1957 and 1970. Three buildings from this category were shot with the UAV, the National Mosque, Tun Abdul Razak Apartments or famously known as the Pekeliling Flats, and the Rifle Range Flats in Penang. This research will present the utilization of UAV in documenting a built heritage, its challenges in operating the machine, and documenting the sites. This study also briefly describes how aerial videography can be beneficial for visualization artists. In addition to aerial capturing, one aspect of built heritage documentation deals with e-reconstruction including digital drawings, 3D modeling, virtual reality, etc. This can be achieved by using existing visual materials as a reference to generate a virtualized version of the building. In some points visualization artist needs full access to the building, as existing reference images are insufficient. But as mentioned above, sometimes access is limited to terms and conditions mostly related to safety. In this situation one of the best alternatives is to use UAV drones. Aerial videography can be beneficial for visualization artists, first as the reference, and secondly to be combined with virtualized materials for augmented reality purposes as the land where flats were located on, will be covered by newly built skyscrapers in the near future.

This paper provides a new perspective on Enterprise content Management systems (ECMS)-use and identify novel ways in which these technologies can be used to support organizations' unified business processes. The main objective of this study is to understand and explain how unified businesses that employs highly integrated and standardized business operations could use ECMS to support their work operations. Consequently, empirical investigations using a qualitative research design were conducted in two unified organizations. Empirical evidence of the two cases were brought together in a cross-case analysis and the synthesis resulted in four modes of ECMS-use that could support unified businesses, that is, to: (1) collaborate among units on projects, (2) approve project documents and monitor project progress, (3) access standard operating procedures, and (4) provide links and access to information systems. This research fills the gap in the literature on the topic of ECMS-use and extends prior studies by reporting on organizations' experiences in using ECMS and focusing on how ECMS-use can support business processes. Business and IT managers will have a better understanding on how to maximize and gain benefit from this kind of technologies by embedding the use of it to their daily business operations.

the challenge for future generation of wireless environment is on how to choose the appropriate wireless access network connection when there are several different wireless networks are existed. Hence, a vertical handover network selection (VHONS) being used to aid in term of service quality for user's satisfaction of the mobile terminal. This article intends to propose a new method of choosing the vertical handover network. This method covers the weight distribution and cost factor techniques. The weight distribution is used to measure different weights for existing wireless network based on the user's preference and mobile terminal power. The cost factor technique is also used to identify the cost for performing handover target by considering every network parameters and its weight. Results obtained showed that the algorithm has the ability to increase user's satisfaction compared to other algorithms, which consistently choose one accessible network. © 2014 IEEE.

Today, the crisis has worsened the panorama for Universities, placing new constraints that require being more sustainable economically. In addition, universities will also have to improve their research and teaching in order to obtain more research funds and attract more students. In this panorama, analytics can be a very useful tool since it allows academics (and university managers) to get a more thorough view of their context, to better understand the environment, and to identify potential improvements. Some analytics have been done under the names of Learning analytics, Academic analytics, Educational Data Mining and etcetera. However, these systems, under our humble opinion, only take into account the small part of data related to the problem, but not contextual data. In order to perform analytics efficiently and reproduce their results easily in other contexts, it is necessary to have as much information as possible about the context. For example, when communication forums are analyzed to see the concepts in which students have more doubts, it is important to analyze also what concepts are taught in the subject. Having access to both sources, more information can be obtained and may help to discover not only the problem (a concept is difficult for students) but also its cause (maybe it is not explained in the materials of the course). The work presented in the paper proposes a novel approach to work in that direction: gathering information from different aspects within subjects. In particular, the paper presents an approach that uses natural language processing techniques to analyze the subject's materials in order to discover which concepts are taught and their importance in the subject. The contribution of the paper is a system that allows obtaining a better understanding of subjects. The results can be used for analyzing the suitability of materials to subjects and to enrich and contextualize other analytical processes.

The discourse on the image and the archive is critical in these times of higher capacity storage, bigger bandwidth, and larger than ever digital projections and display applications. As we move from giga to terabytes, machines are now equipped to handle and manage thousands of images, opening up possibilities of increasing the numbers in photographic documentation of culture and heritage. Data or photographic capture of a chosen subject has never been as liberated with this phenomena, thus the availability of DSLRs with more than 30MP picture taking capacity. This paper describes the technical and theoretical elements, as well as the output of images, of a documentary photography of the Pua Kumbu textile making of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. The location of this documentary is the Garie Longhouse, situated on the bank of Kain River, a tributary to the Rajang River, in the district of Kapit, Sarawak. Three fieldwork of a week each were conducted over a period of one year, to document the processes, weavers, environment, tools, and the produced textiles. Isolated in the interior of Borneo, access to the longhouse is only via the river, which means 8 hours of boat ride on 2 types of boats from the International Airport of Sibu, Sarawak. As a common issue in documentary photography, which is;what is more important, the subject or the photograph, this paper will elaborate on the theories and practice when capturing the scenes and objects. The whole collection of images, with a pixel dimension of 4912 boxed times(sic)360, averaging 15Mb (pre-processed), at 300dpi are intended for an interactive projected display in a full scale mobile exhibition, with selected images for large digital prints and a book publication.

In this work, we present a new social image dataset related to the fashion and clothing domain. The dataset contains more than 32000 images, their context and social metadata. Furthermore the dataset is enriched with several types of annotations collected from the Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) crowdsourcing platform, which can serve as ground truth for various content analysis algorithms. This dataset has been successfully used at the Crowdsourcing task of the 2013 MediaEval multimedia Benchmarking initiative. The dataset contributes to several research areas such as Crowdsourcing, multimedia content and context analysis as well as hybrid human/automatic approaches. In this paper, the dataset is described in detail and the dataset collection strategy, statistics, applications of dataset and its contribution to MediaEval 2013 is discussed. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Keeping focused on a certain goal or topic when learning with resources found on the Web is a challenge. Creating a hierarchical learning goal structure with activities and sub-activities can help the learner to keep on track. Moreover, providing useful recommendations to such activities can further support the learner. However, recommendations need to be relevant to the specific goal or activity the learner is currently working on, as well as being novel and diverse to the learner. Such user-centric metrics like novelty and diversity are best measured by asking the users themselves. Nonetheless, conducting user experiments are notoriously time-consuming and access to an adequate amount of users is often very limited. Crowdsourcing offers a means to evaluate TEL recommender algorithms by reaching out to sufficient participants in a shorter time-frame and with less effort. In this paper, a concept for evaluating TEL recommender algorithms using crowdsourcing is presented as well as a repeated proof-of-concept evaluation experiment of a TEL graph-based recommender algorithm AScore that exploits hierarchical activity structures. Results from both experiments support the postulated hypotheses, thereby showing that crowdsourcing can be successfully applied to evaluate TEL recommender algorithms.
