Recently, an increasing number of smart phone users are eagerly using the cellular network in extensive data applications. In particular, multimedia downloads generated by Internet-capable smart phones and other portable devices (such as iPad) have been widely recognized as the major source for strains in cellular networks, to a degree where service quality for all users is significantly impacted. Lately, patterns in both the content consumption as well as the Wi-Fi access by the users were alleged to be available. In this paper we introduce a technique to schedule the content for prefetching based on mobile usage patterns. This technique utilizes both a content profile as well as a bandwidth profile to schedule content for prefetching. Users can then use the cached version of the content in order to achieve a better user experience and reduce the peak-to-average ratio in mobile networks, especially during peak hours of the day. An experiment using real users traces was conducted and the results after applying the proposed evolutionary scheduling algorithm show that up to 70 percent of the user content requests can be fulfilled i.e. the content was successfully cached before request.

The convergence of emerging real-time multimedia services, the increasing coverage of wireless networks and the ever-growing popularity of mobile devices, are leading to an era of user-centric multimedia wireless services. In this scenario, heterogeneous communications will co-exist and ensure that the end-user is always best connected. However, the Quality of Experience (QoE) support for emerging video applications in multi-operator environments remains a significant challenge and is crucial for the success of wireless multimediasystems. This paper presents a Quality of Experience Handover Architecture for Converged Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, called QoEHand. QoEHand allows users of multimediacontent to be always best connected in IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.16e environments. Simulation results show the impact and benefit of the proposed solution in multi-access and multi-operator wireless scenarios by using objective and subjective QoE metrics.

The growing popularity of the high-end mobile computing devices-smartphones, tablets, notebooks and more equipped with high-speed network access, enables the mobile user to watch multimediacontent from any source on any screen, at any time, while on the move or stationary. In this context, the network operators must ensure smooth video streaming with the lowest service delay, jitter, and packet loss. This paper proposes a resource efficient Device-Oriented Adaptive multimedia Scheme (DOAS) built on top of the downlink scheduler in LTE-Advanced systems. DOAS bases its adaptation decision on the end-user device display resolution information and Quality of Service (QoS). DOAS is implemented on top of the Proportional Fair (PF) and the well-known Modified Largest Weighted Delay First (M-LWDF) scheduling algorithms within the 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced system. The performance of the proposed adaptive multimedia scheme was analyzed and compared against a non-adaptive solution in terms of throughput, packet loss and PSNR.

Large-scale public events, such as conferences are becoming increasingly interactive with tools to support Web-based and mobile access to the event program. Multimodal interoperable devices can further improve the event experience. This paper introduces a multi-device, multimodal and multi-user conference program guide (M(3)PG), which provides access to the conference program through shared public displays and mobile devices. The service offers additional functionality such as multimediacontent, voting, and event feedback. Its interaction methods include spoken language, gestures and haptic feedback. The service has been used in two conferences where it received very positive feedback. Together with pre-commercialization studies, the results indicate that the service is useful for conferences both from the user and organizer perspectives.

There are numerous methods which are used to control the content of the transmitted television programmes. However, these well-known methods do not solve the above mentioned problem completely. The paper presents a more effective method for automatic identification of the provider's logo based on an original image sequence analysis. The automatic identification of the provider's logo can be used to block access to video programmes of the selected providers. The method has been tested on some chosen video transmissions on-line, achieving over 98% of correct identification.

The problem of event detection in multimedia clips is typically handled by modeling each of the component modalities independently, then combining their detection scores in a late fusion approach. One of the problems of a late fusion model in the multimedia setting is that the detection scores may be missing from one or more components for a given clip;e.g., when there is no speech in the clip;or when there is no overlay text. Standard fusion techniques typically address this problem by assuming a default backoff score for a component when its detection score is missing for a clip. This may potentially bias the fusion model, especially if there are many missing detections from a given component. In this work, we present the Sparse Conditional Mixture Model (SCMM) which models only the observed detection scores for each example, thereby avoiding making any assumptions about the distributions of the scores that are made by backoff models. Our experiments in multi-media event detection using the TRECVID-2011 corpus demonstrates that SCMM achieves statistically significant performance gains over standard late fusion techniques. The SCMM model is very general and is applicable to fusion problems with missing data in any domain.

As real-time mobile multimedia becomes more and more popular in modern life, Quality of Service (QoS) has drawn more and more attention. IEEE 802.11 has been widely deployed to provide broadband wireless network access due to its low cost, simplicity and high bandwidth capacity. However, its poor network availability and frequent network disconnection in a mobile scenario challenge real-time services. This paper presents a caching and pre-fetching mechanism based on the usage of content Centric Network (CCN) in mobile environments. The idea is to anticipate disconnections and prefetch the content that a user is expected to access in the near future. Hence, when to trigger the caching and pre-fetching module is an essential part of the objective. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a disconnection predictor algorithm. The method is to predict the time before a terminal disconnects from an access Point (AP) by monitoring Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI).
