Personalized content aggregation methods, such as for news aggregation, are an emerging technology. The growth of mobile devices has only increased demand for timely updates on online information. To reduce traffic or bandwidth, efficient retrieval scheduling strategies have been developed to monitor new postings. Most of these methods, however, do not take user access patterns into consideration. For example, the strategy for a user who checks news once a day should be different from the strategy for a user who checks news ten times a day. In this paper, we propose a personalized content aggregation model in which delay time depends not only on the retrieval time and posting time, but also on user access patterns. With total expected delay as the objective, we derive a resource allocation strategy and retrieval scheduling strategy that is optimal when postings are Poisson. To our knowledge, this is the first personalized aggregation model on multiple data sources. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we suggest a method for collaborative work with large amount of graphical content in 3D virtual worlds. We argue that applying this method will benefit educational and other professional use of this technology. The most common problems with applying 3D virtual worlds in everyday teaching and learning are steep learning curve and demand for computational and networking resources. The suggested method allows reducing the load on CPU, and therefore, designing convenient and sophisticated tools for collaborative work with graphics inside a 3D environment. We present the methods of generating images, the design, and implementation of tools we developed for vAcademia virtual world based on this method. We discuss the educational value of the possibilities to work with large amount of graphical content in a 3D virtual world, which were limited before. We provide performance evaluation of the suggested method based on a series of tests which we applied to the whole system and specific algorithms. In addition, we present the initial result of user evaluation. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper explores the design of in-network caching policies for non-independent spot reporting content. The problem is motivated by autonomous sensor devices, such as soldier mounted cameras, that collect and store correlated data from the physical world. Physical states exhibit correlations in space and in time that need to be considered in caching decisions. Prior work in sensor networks that exploits correlations between content items focused more on efficient data collection, not caching, whereas work on caching mostly assumed that cached objects are independent. In contrast, when cached objects overlap in information content, such as pictures of a scene taken from different vantage points, the utility from storing similar items is sub-additive, motivating a fresh look at content-aware replacement policies. We describe a new caching policy, called diversity caching, that factors in both popularity and non-independence among objects into cache replacement algorithms. In a military environment, such a caching scheme supports a multi-modal information access model. Edge devices collect more data than the terrestrial network can handle, push high priority content directly through the network, and then use delay tolerant store and forward mechanisms to transmit the remaining content upon return to base. In information fusion systems, this provides immediate access to a wide variety of user queried content while remaining within the constraints of the terrestrial network and not relying on more expensive satellite networks. This paper evaluates diversity caching in the context of a disaster response application, where survivors and first responders survey damage and up-load observations into caches that are queried by others. Evaluation shows that diversity caching substantially improves a notion of coverage over previous replacement policies, such as LRU and Intentional Caching.

[Objective] This paper investigates new Web-based course content in the Network environment, the role of curriculum evaluation and significance, the evaluation methods, processes, and should adhere to the principles of the network. [Results] It focuses on teaching content, learning resources and resides among the contents of teaching strategies and learning strategies of evaluation, involving students, teachers, learning materials, online teaching support systems, learning support and service system in each part. evaluation of online courses plays a guiding role in guiding the design and development of online courses in the right direction;By analyzing the course of learning resources, learning process and its causes, we can determine its effectiveness, shortcomings, contradictions and problems and find out the reasons, ways and measures for improvements, can improve the network quality of the course and optimize teaching. [Conclusion] Online course teaching evaluation of network can provide reliable protection and guidance function, and it is a strong fulcrum in the whole systems engineering courses and online teaching.

Present day mobile phones have evolved as multimedia devices, where users can capture and store photos, videos on their mobile phones. As the amount of digital multimedia content expands, it becomes increasingly difficult to find specific images in the device, giving rise to problems of organization, storing and retrieval of images. To improve human access to a large unstructured data in their personal collections on mobile phones, there is a need for effective and precise retrieval algorithms for the user to search browse and interact with these collections in real time. Retrieval algorithms are highly complex and this characteristic becomes more intense on mobile platform due to restrictions in architecture and computing power. In this paper we propose a speech based image retrieval algorithm for personal collections optimized for porting on to a mobile phones. We have treated the speech spectrogram as an image and applied trace transformation to obtain an unique and robust identifier string that acts as a fingerprint for image retrieval systems. Trace transform is popular in image processing algorithms because it is robust to affine transforms for feature extraction. The proposed algorithm exhibits optimization in memory and retrieval time costs.

multimedia capture and context awareness are two relevant subjects in ubiquitous computing research. While the former results in large amounts of digital media (e.g., video, audio, slides, text comments) being automatically produced, the latter offers the proper means to integrate and access such content. By merging the two concepts, users may benefit from tools that allow them to retrieve, view and interact with the captured media artifacts. In this paper, we present a contextual access architecture for personalization and recommendation of interactive multimedia content captured in an instrumented educational environment. Our approach takes into account context information, user preferences and presentation constraints in order to personalize the access experience, tailoring it to users' needs.

This paper deals with concept of protected access to multimedia with respect to rights management of transmitted content. Presented technologies are ready to be implemented and fulfill the needs of most of Internet Service Providers for video on demand service to customers with respect legal issues given by content owners. With numbers of users using mobile devices for streaming delivery there is need to implement new authentication models and methods. This paper presents some ideas based on features provided by modern mobile operating systems. Part of this work presents Videoserver platform developed by Computer Networks Laboratory at Technical University in Kosice. Videoserver platform serves as testbed for developing new solutions for better content handling and for providing secure access to content. Paper is focused mostly on outlines of possible solutions to open problems.

We consider user pairing for singe-carrier frequency-division multiple-access (SC-FDMA) transmission in the uplink of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. Two users, equipped with one antenna each, are multiplexed to the same time and frequency resource within one cell. A virtual multiple-input multiple-output (V-MIMO) system arises for each user pair if multiple receive antennas are employed at the base station. For user pairing and frequency allocation, knowledge about the channel state is necessary. According to the LTE standard sounding reference signals are used and transmitted with interleaved frequency-division multiple-access (I-FDMA). In channel state acquisition, first, the subcarriers not included in channel sounding should be interpolated in frequency direction. Then a prediction in time domain for the point in time of the considered subframe is required. Channel interpolation and prediction is revisited in this paper. Then the influence of channel interpolation and prediction errors on the capacity of the system with user pairing and frequency resource allocation is studied. Simulation results show that joint user pairing and frequency allocation combined with channel interpolation and prediction is beneficial for low speed and medium-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For medium-to-high speed or low SNR, random pairing and frequency allocation is a better choice.
