This article describes primarily the development and empiric validation of a design for security warning messages on smartphones for primary school children (7-10 years old). Our design approach for security warnings for children uses a specific character and is based on recommendations of a paediatrician expert. The design criteria are adapted to children's skills, e. g. their visual, acoustic, and haptic perception and their literacy. The developed security warnings are prototypically implemented in an iOS application (on the iPhone 3G/4G) where children are warned by a simulated anti-malware background service, while they are busy with another task. For the evaluation we select methods for empiric validation of the design approach from the field of usability testing ("think aloud" test, questionnaires, log-files, etc.). Our security warnings prototype is evaluated in an empiric user study with 13 primary school children, aged between 8 and 9 years and of different gender (5 girls, 8 boys). The evaluation analysis shows, that nearly all children liked the design of our security warnings. Surprisingly, on several security warning messages most of the children react in the right way after reading the warning, although the meaning couldn't be interpreted in the right way. Another interesting result is, that several children relate specific information, e. g. update, to a specific character. Furthermore, it could be seen that most of the primary school test candidates have little awareness of security threats on smartphones. It is a very strong argument to develop e. g. tutorials or websites in order to raise awareness and teach children how to recognize security threats and how to react to them. Our design approach of security warnings for children's smartphones can be a basis for warning on other systems or applications like tutorials, which are used by children. The sharing, distribution and transmission of proliferated digital multimedia contents over the insecure worldwide available Internet and wired/wireless networks has encouraged the copyright fraud, unauthorized access and illegal usage. This brings new technical challenges to provide the end-to-end security to multimedia contents for establishing ownership rights, ensuring authorized access, preventing illegal replication etc. To address the above mentioned requirements, a visual multimedia content protection technique is proposed. The technique is based on the high dynamic responses of multiple high-dimensional chaotic systems. The multimedia encryption is achieved by randomly picking the actual encryption keys out of numbers of hybridized keys that are extracted from complex sequences of three high dimensional chaotic systems. Accordingly, a high encryption effect is turned up in the encrypted content. The proposed technique is experimented on the multimedia color imagery. The decomposed R, G, B components of color plain-image are initially diffused with their self, before diffusing with encryption keys. It is experimentally verified that the proposed technique has great encryption performance and achieves high confidential security. Eventually, the statistical results confirm the practicability and suitability of the approach for visual multimedia content protection.

Purpose - The need of tools for content analysis, information extraction and retrieval of multimedia objects in their native form is strongly emphasized into the judicial domain: digital videos represent a fundamental informative source of events occurring during judicial proceedings that should be stored, organized and retrieved in short time and with low cost. This paper seeks to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach - In this context the JUMAS system, stem from the homonymous European Project (***), takes up the challenge of exploiting semantics and machine learning techniques towards a better usability of multimedia judicial folders. Findings - In this paper one of the most challenging issues addressed by the JUMAS project is described: extracting meaningful abstracts of given judicial debates in order to efficiently access salient contents. In particular, the authors present an ontology enhanced multimedia summarization environment able to derive a synthetic representation of judicial media contents by a limited loss of meaningful information while overcoming the information overload problem. Originality/value - The adoption of ontology-based query expansion has made it possible to improve the performance of multimedia summarization algorithms with respect to the traditional approaches based on statistics. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been evaluated on real media contents, highlighting a good potential for extracting key events in the challenging area of judicial proceedings.

On-demand multimedia is a pervasive part of our lives. content of all types is available from websites such as YouTube, Hulu, and Pandora. Individuals consume this content using home entertainment systems, personal computers, tablet PC's and cell phones giving them access to multimedia information at any time or place. Applying this approach to education gives students better access to course content, expands instructor time, assures uniform delivery, and can be constructed to engage students using several learning styles simultaneously. This paper documents the application of on-demand multimedia content into electric machines lecturelaboratory courses. It will explore software tools, application techniques, and student responses to on-demand video and screen capture course content. It reviews several software tools capable of producing video, screen capture content, and compares their performance. The paper then documents several methods of implementing video and multimedia into the course to engage students and enhance their learning experiences. Webpage monitoring and informal student surveys indicate media usage and student impressions of developed content. © 2012 American Society for Engineering Education.

We consider in this paper downlink scheduling at the Medium access Layer (MAC) layer for delay sensitive traffic in wireless systems based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple access (OFDMA). We refer in particular to next generation wireless systems such as 3GPP-LTE. We propose an Opportunistic Packet Loss Fair (OPLF) scheduling algorithm based on calculating a simple dynamic priority function which depends on the Head of Line (HOL) packet delay, the packet loss rate (PLR) and the achievable instantaneous downlink rate of each user. This algorithm overcomes the main limitations of existing algorithms, achieving better performance than state-of-the art algorithms, such as Modified Largest Weighted Delay First (M-LWDF), Proportional Fair (PF), and Packet Loss Fair (PLF), in terms of throughput, PLR and fairness among users.

This is a comparative study for recursive and non-recursive content search algorithms in a dual multimedia databases with medical (endoscopic) and different (natural) images. The recursive algorithms in two stages use the same method of determining similarity at each stage and models to represent color content of images in quantified uniform spaces. The non-recursive algorithms use a single iteration and models to represent color content of images in unevenly quantified color spaces. The performance of the search has been measured according to four parameters: reappeal, precision, the quality of retrieval and the cost of retrieval. These are based on two methods of deciding the similarities between the models of images: Minkowski distance and Jaccard generalized measure. The model of representing the images in multimedia database used here are the normalized color histogram. The color space of the images are RGB reduced to 64 and 125 colors and HSV reduced to 60 and 162 colors. The study was realized in a dual database containing 360 endoscopic images grouped in 23 categories and 280 different images grouped in 10 categories. With the proliferation of interactive media, non-linear and non-continuous media accesses have become a norm. Examples of such interactive media include video-on-demand, massive multiplayer virtual environments, massively multiplayer online game, zoomable video, Google Earth, and free-viewpoint video. To enable scalable delivery of these media contents to potentially millions of users, P2P architecture is often adopted. Non-linear and non-continuous user access pattern, however, pose new challenges on P2P interactive media streaming systems. These challenges include the need of more sophisticated prefetching scheme, increasing server load, high demand for short content discovery time, and difficulty of bandwidth allocation. We first try to understand the effect of non-linear and non-continuous media access on the streaming system performance, in particular, the server load, through analytical modeling. Then a novel user access pattern driven content discovery mechanism is proposed to address the content discovery challenge during non-continuous access. Works aiming at the rest of challenges are ongoing. © 2012 ACM.

This paper describes the development of a multimedia information system to support the discourse analysis of video recordings of television programs. Although the TV system is one of the most fascinating media phenomena ever created by men, there is still a lack of information systems that allow an effective retrieval of TV information relevant to the discoursive analysis and evaluation of such content. Given this context, in an attempt to provide Brazilian TV researchers with computational tools to assist their research, as well as to contribute to the discussion towards turning viable the access to the TV collection developed in this country, this work proposes the development of a multimedia information system, with a partnership with the Brazilian open TV channel Rede Minas. The mentioned system is based on the Matterhorn framework, indexing and retrieval techniques of audiovisual information and a tool collection that allows the automatic evaluation of essential parameters on the discourse analysis of TV video. The architecture developed for the system involves the possibility of information retrieval based on content independent metadata, as well as content dependent metadata, which are determined through discourse analysis techniques and image and sound signal processing.

accessing private and public multimedia content over the web with mobile terminals can be cumbersome. To approach this problem, we introduce an ecosystem where the content is accessed with clients that are constructed as mashups. Mashups are web applications that combine already existing data into an integrated experience. In addition to traditional mashup elements such as text and images, also other types of multimedia artifacts - sound, video and even small programs - can be used as content in mashups. However, currently available methods implementing mashups do not allow effortless access to personal data across domains or provide means to ensure that the user experience is coherent. This paper describes our mobile mashup architecture aimed to solve these problems and work as a ubiquitous platform for mobile multimedia mashups. The architecture enables a mashup ecosystem where different content providers and client developers can contribute. As a practical implementation, we present a video mashup client developed for Android. In addition, we discuss the lessons learned during the research.

Sharing and publishing images and photos have become the trend of nowadays (social networks, messengers, etc.). Providing appropriate techniques to preserve privacy and protect content of sensitive and private images is an essential need. In this paper, we present a novel security model for image content protection. In our model, we provide dynamic security rules based on first order logic to express constraints that can be applied to contextual information as well as low level features of images. We finally discuss a set of experiments and studies carried out to evaluate the proposed approach.
