The convergence of emerging real-time multimedia services, the increasing coverage of wireless networks and the ever-growing popularity of mobile devices, are leading to an era of user-centric multimedia wireless services. In this scenario, heterogeneous communications will co-exist and ensure that the end-user is always best connected. However, the Quality of Experience (QoE) support for emerging video applications in multi-operator environments remains a significant challenge and is crucial for the success of wireless multimediasystems. This paper presents a Quality of Experience Handover Architecture for Converged Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, called QoEHand. QoEHand allows users of multimediacontent to be always best connected in IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.16e environments. Simulation results show the impact and benefit of the proposed solution in multi-access and multi-operator wireless scenarios by using objective and subjective QoE metrics.

In order to prevent piracy of digital media content, Digital Watermarking has emerged as a potential alternative to existing methods such as Digital Rights Management (DRM) based systems. For real-time watermarking applications, digital watermarking method should consume less time for embedding the watermark while remaining robust against attacks. This paper presents on-the-fly video watermarking method for the copyright protection of videos and also addresses implementation issues in real-time applications. Experimental results show that the proposed method requires less computational time for embedding the watermark and hence is suitable for real-time applications. The results also show that the method is robust against attacks. The proposed method is compared with other watermarking algorithms and it yields better results in terms of complexity and robustness.

Many content Based Image Retrieval systems (CBIRs) have been invented in the last decade. The general mechanism of the search process is very similar for each of these CBIRs, and the calculation of rankings is determined by the comparison of features (low-, mid-, high-level). Nevertheless, all things being equal, the respective realization leads to different results. Knowledge about the internal configuration (used features, weights and metrics) of these systems would be beneficial in many usage scenarios (e.g., by using a query image content sensitive query forwarding strategy or improved result ranking strategies in meta search engines). In this context, the paper presents an approach that supports an automatic detection of the configuration of CBIR systems. We demonstrate that the problem can be partly traced back to an optimization problem and tested several optimization algorithms. The approach has been evaluated based on the ImageCLEF test set and shows good results.

This paper presents radio resource management and performance analysis for WiMax and LTE by using RRM (Radio Resource Management) methods. Providing a comparison between different traffics (e. g. video (streaming), data and voice) for multimedia communication systems (3G), the paper offers different standpoints that can satisfy a researchers looking for theoretical analysis and advanced algorithms or searching for their concrete application in the real networks. The paper also demonstrates the importance of the radio resource management (RRM) in a wireless communication networks for OFDMA systems. We concentrate our study in the reservation of the radio resources according the Rayleigh channel. Multipath Rayleigh channel E-Model is useful in wireless communications (IEEE 802.16e). Existing multimedia recommenders suggest a specific type of multimedia items rather than items of different types personalized for a user based on his/her preference. Assume that a user is interested in a particular family movie, it is appealing if a multimedia recommendation system can suggest other movies, music, books, and paintings closely related to the movie. We propose a comprehensive, personalized multimedia recommendation system, denoted MudRecS, which makes recommendations on movies, music, books, and paintings similar in content to other movies, music, books, and/or paintings that a MudRecS user is interested in. MudRecS does not rely on users' access patterns/histories, connection information extracted from social networking sites, collaborated filtering methods, or user personal attributes (such as gender and age) to perform the recommendation task. It simply considers the users' ratings, genres, role players (authors or artists), and reviews of different multimedia items, which are abundant and easy to find on the Web. MudRecS predicts the ratings of multimedia items that match the interests of a user to make recommendations. The performance of MudRecS has been compared with current state-of-the-art multimedia recommenders using various multimedia datasets, and the experimental results show that MudRecS significantly outperforms other systems in accurately predicting the ratings of multimedia items to be recommended.

Internet has evolved to be content-oriented and its key usage focuses on content dissemination and retrieval, while Internet architecture is designed for host-oriented services. To address the challenge, Named Data Networking (NDN) has been proposed, where in-network caching becomes a new research topic due to its dominant position in NDN architecture. This work develops efficient caching schemes for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) so as to maximize the inter-ISP traffic savings. With the special goal, we design caching system according to the NDN network model and present coordinated caching algorithms which can dynamically determine cache placement along the forwarding path. Comprehensive simulation results show that our schemes outperform the widely used Leaving Copies Everywhere (LCE) both in inter-ISP traffic savings and the average number of access hops by up to 20%. In addition, we demonstrate good feasibility of the proposed caching algorithms in a set of simulations spanning a wide range of parameter values.

Nonvolatile memories (NVMs) such as flash memories play a significant role in meeting the data storage requirements of today's computation activities. The rapid increase of storage density for NVMs however brings reliability issues due to closer alignment of adjacent cells on chip, and more levels that are programmed into a cell. We propose a new method for error correction, which uses the random access capability of NVMs and the redundancy that inherently exists in information content. Although it is theoretically possible to remove the redundancy via data compression, existing source coding algorithms do not remove all of it for efficient computation. We propose a method that can be combined with existing storage solutions for text files, namely content-assisted decoding. Using the statistical properties of words and phrases in the text of a given language, our decoder identifies the location of each subcodeword representing some word in a given input noisy codeword, and flips the bits to compute a most likely word sequence. The decoder can be adapted to work together with traditional ECC decoders to keep the number of errors within the correction capability of traditional decoders. The combined decoding framework is evaluated with a set of benchmark files.
