Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) is a new radio access technology that is expected to provide better experience among the mobile cellular users. It delivers multimedia services using packet switching technology. Therefore, intelligent design of packet scheduling for the LTE-A to provide Quality of Service (QoS) comparable to fixed line services becomes crucial. However, packet scheduling over the LTE-A system faces a number of challenges. This paper studies a number of low complexity real time packet scheduling algorithms developed for the legacy mobile cellular systems. In addition to that, studies on performance impact due to mobile cellular channel impairments are presented. The study aims to identify the methods used by the existing packet scheduling algorithms as well to ascertain the performance degradations on the QoS of multimedia services due to the impact of the mobile cellular channel impairments. Future works include development of a new packet scheduling algorithm to overcome detrimental effects due to LTE-A channel impairments on the QoS of multimedia services.

In order to prevent piracy of digital media content, Digital Watermarking has emerged as a potential alternative to existing methods such as Digital Rights Management (DRM) based systems. For real-time watermarking applications, digital watermarking method should consume less time for embedding the watermark while remaining robust against attacks. This paper presents on-the-fly video watermarking method for the copyright protection of videos and also addresses implementation issues in real-time applications. Experimental results show that the proposed method requires less computational time for embedding the watermark and hence is suitable for real-time applications. The results also show that the method is robust against attacks. The proposed method is compared with other watermarking algorithms and it yields better results in terms of complexity and robustness.

This paper presents the content Aware Network designed as one of the Parallel Internets developed on Virtual Infrastructure. The CAN is a post-IP network designed to facilitate access to multimedia content in large scale environment. We introduce the proposed CAN network architecture and discuss mechanisms and algorithms required to assure ubiquitous content access and efficient content delivery. In particular, we propose new content naming and resolution schemes, an effective content source selection algorithm, which optimize resource utilization and the flexible content delivery method. Moreover, we present developed prototype and numerical results illustrating effectiveness of proposed CAN delivery method.

This paper describes the development of a multimedia information system to support the discourse analysis of video recordings of television programs. Although the TV system is one of the most fascinating media phenomena ever created by men, there is still a lack of information systems that allow an effective retrieval of TV information relevant to the discoursive analysis and evaluation of such content. Given this context, in an attempt to provide Brazilian TV researchers with computational tools to assist their research, as well as to contribute to the discussion towards turning viable the access to the TV collection developed in this country, this work proposes the development of a multimedia information system, with a partnership with the Brazilian open TV channel Rede Minas. The mentioned system is based on the Matterhorn framework, indexing and retrieval techniques of audiovisual information and a tool collection that allows the automatic evaluation of essential parameters on the discourse analysis of TV video. The architecture developed for the system involves the possibility of information retrieval based on content independent metadata, as well as content dependent metadata, which are determined through discourse analysis techniques and image and sound signal processing.

accessing private and public multimedia content over the web with mobile terminals can be cumbersome. To approach this problem, we introduce an ecosystem where the content is accessed with clients that are constructed as mashups. Mashups are web applications that combine already existing data into an integrated experience. In addition to traditional mashup elements such as text and images, also other types of multimedia artifacts - sound, video and even small programs - can be used as content in mashups. However, currently available methods implementing mashups do not allow effortless access to personal data across domains or provide means to ensure that the user experience is coherent. This paper describes our mobile mashup architecture aimed to solve these problems and work as a ubiquitous platform for mobile multimedia mashups. The architecture enables a mashup ecosystem where different content providers and client developers can contribute. As a practical implementation, we present a video mashup client developed for Android. In addition, we discuss the lessons learned during the research.

High popularity of VoIP in last few years leads to higher concern of hackers. Many solutions of VoIP servers are created, but security was not always the top feature of these solutions. IP telephony infrastructure provides also other services, which are not related only to VoIP traffic. All these factors lead to a situation, when a VoIP server easily becomes a target of attacks. A wide spectrum of attacks can be done against VoIP, starting from misuse attacks, congestion of existing infrastructure to a completely (or partially) denial of service. Very popular are also SPIT attacks - An analogy to spam e-mail messages. Typical SPIT attacks are unwanted, automatically dialed prerecorded calls with commercial content. This paper deals with the need of application for automatic testing VoIP server robustness against different types of attacks. This application was developed on VSB-TUO Ostrava as a testing tool to verify if the target VoIP PBX is adequately secured and protected against any real threats. The system tests the SIP element for several usually occurring attacks and compiles evaluation of its overall security based on successful or unsuccessful penetrations. The article describes the application and algorithms that are used by system. Another way to improving VoIP server security is an automatic defense mechanism, which blocks incoming attacks - Typically various Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. This proposed solution is based on Snort and SnortSam and has been implemented and evaluated in a test bed. Different DoS attack types are described in detail and knowledge is used to test the robustness of the VoIP server. These two applications give us an effective way for complex testing of VoIP infrastructure key elements and to effective blocking of unwanted, malicious traffic.

The tremendous growth in the use of the World Wide Web and the expansion of Video On Demand and IPTV services increase the bandwidth demands, enforcing the creation of congestion in Internet's links and the experience of big delays to the users. Replicating content at caches which are close to the users can improve the access time for them and reduce the network bandwidth usage as well. In this work, we focus on hierarchical cache topologies, as IPTV networks tend to have a mostly hierarchical tree structure, making the content placement problem in them a topic of major importance. The problem is NP-Complete in it's general form. In this paper, we make the simplifying assumption that the size of each object is equal to one. Under that assumption we show that certain instances of the content placement problem are of polynomial complexity, while we provide an algorithm for their solution. Besides, we extend the proposed algorithm to handle the general case of arbitrary object sizes. Simulation experiments for typical popularity distributions depict the performance distance between the optimal solution and some low complexity heuristic algorithms that are commonly applied nowadays.

Digitisation of the cultural heritage means that a significant amount of material is now available through online digital library portals. However, the vast quantity of cultural heritage material can also be overwhelming for many users who lack knowledge of the collections, subject knowledge and the specialist language used to describe this content. Search portals often provide little or no guidance on how to find and interpret this information. The situation is very different in museums and galleries where collections are organized in exhibitions which offer themes and stories that visitors can explore. The PATHS project, which is funded under the European Commission's FP7 programme, is developing a system that explores the familiar metaphor of a trail (pathway) to enhance the discovery and use of the content made available in digital libraries. This paper will report on the findings of the user requirements analysis and the specifications for the first prototype of the PATHS system which is based on contents from Europeana and the Alinari Archives.

With the constantly growing number of multimedia devices, images can now be viewed on a broad range of display of tremendously varying size. However, perceiving all the details of a multimedia content is difficult on smaller mobile devices. To solve this problem, saliency based image re-targeting algorithms have been proposed in order to generate more perceptually efficient thumbnails. In this article, we propose a new real-time visual attention based image re-targeting method which differs from previous works in that it generates dynamic (i.e. time changing) thumbnails. This unique behavior is made possible by the use of a dynamic computational model of visual attention. By exploiting the singular characteristics of this model, we are able to dynamically re-target large and complex images in order to efficiently script their discovery on large and small displays. We achieved such re-targeting by integrating simulated attentional focuses over a fixed time window into a temporal heat-map. By segmenting this heat-map at each time step, we can generate the region of interest that will be displayed as dynamic preview. In order to validate that every salient location of the image has been displayed, we compare the regions shown in the preview with mean observers eye fixations obtained during a free viewing experiment.

In Wireless multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), data fusion and collaborative in-network processing operations often require effective multimedia synchronization control. Extensive researches have been done in the traditional networks. Most of these works assume that there exists a powerful synchronization controller in the network. However, for WMSNs, the in-network processing of the multimedia content is usually performed based on the resource-constrained sensors. Traditional synchronization control algorithms fail to run on the low-end hardware platform. In this paper, we propose an adaptive synchronization control scheme with multi-level buffer to address this problem. Main contributions of this paper are as follows. (i) To overcome the resource constraint of WMSNs, we perform the synchronization control in a distributed way by combining the sensors in the stream transmission path. (ii) By evaluating the current network state, we adjust the level number of the buffer adaptively to balance the delay and delay jitter. (iii) Through analyzing the buffer state of each level, we propose an efficient packet scheduling scheme to reduce the delay jitter actively. (iv) We implement the proposed scheme and verify its effectiveness in our practical WMSNs platform. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme can maintain the streams synchronization effectively with the low-end sensors.
