User-centric services present a new paradigm in next generation networks. The IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an access-independent IP based service control architecture proposing a new platform for user-centric services. Security and data privacy aspects observe a lot of attention in the IMS global objectives. Besides the authentication solutions proposed by the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), research contributions consider authentication protocols and mechanisms to enforce the security and to enhance users' access personalization for IMS based services. Performance is an important factor to be considered when designing authentication protocols. In this paper we use Open BCMP queuing network as a mathematical model to evaluate the performance of an authentication method aiming to personalize each user access. We also propose an algorithm based on clustering to improve the performance of the authentication solution. Through BCMP modeling, we present and analyze the performance of the proposed authentication solution as a first step, and then we show the performance improvement of this solution when applying the clustering algorithm.

Data heterogeneity has been widely observed in P2P content distribution systems. However, most current content location algorithms treat different data objects equally and use the same search scheme for them. We propose a Data-oriented Differentiated Lookup mechanism (DiffLookup), aiming to provide differentiated lookup services with simple and flexible design. DiffLookup offers two lookup services: Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) and replication-based lookup. DHT is employed to construct a structured overlay and provide basic O(log n) lookup service. Furthermore, by taking advantage of DHT routing table, a prefix broadcast scheme is designed to replicate ownership information over the network. Service classification rules are introduced to determine which service should be applied for a certain object. Our simulation shows that, with a slight but acceptable increase in replication bandwidth, DiffLookup can reduce lookup delay significantly by applying the proposed broadcast-based replication to the hottest 10% objects compared to a system without data-oriented differentiation.

This paper describes research activities at FX Palo Alto Laboratory (FXPAL) in the area of multimedia browsing, search, and retrieval. We first consider interfaces for organization and management of personal photo collections. We then survey our work on interactive video search and retrieval. Throughout we discuss the evolution of both the research challenges in these areas and our proposed solutions.

In this work we present a system which visualizes the results obtained from image search engines in such a way that users can conveniently browse the retrieved images. The way in which search results are presented allows the user to grasp the composition of the set of images "at a glance". To do so, images are grouped and positioned according to their distribution in a prosemantic feature space which encodes information about their content at an abstraction level that can be placed between visual and semantic information. The compactness of the feature space allows a fast analysis of the image distribution so that all the computation can be performed in real time.

We perform comparative analysis of the visual quality of multiple 3D displays - seven portable ones, and a large 3D television set. We discuss two groups of parameters that influence the perceived quality of mobile 3D displays. The first group is related with the optical parameters of the displays, such as crosstalk or size of sweet spots. The second group includes content related parameters, such as objective and subjective comfort disparity range, suitable for a given display. We identify eight important parameters to be measured, and for each parameter we present the measurement methodology, and give comparative results for each display. Finally, we discuss the possibility of each display to visualize downscaled stereoscopic HD content with sufficient visual quality.

Be there a traditional mobile user wanting to connect to a remote multimedia server. In order to allow them to enjoy the same user experience remotely (play, interact, edit, store and share capabilities) as in a traditional fixed LAN environment, several dead-locks are to be dealt with: (1) a heavy and heterogeneous content should be sent through a bandwidth constrained network;(2) the displayed content should be of good quality;(3) user interaction should be processed in real-time and (4) the complexity of the practical solution should not exceed the features of the mobile client in terms of CPU, memory and battery. The present paper takes this challenge and presents a fully operational MPEG-4 BiFS solution.

Databases have been an integral component of Data Fusion from the outset when the JDL model was introduced. As advances in High-Level fusion using Multi-Int data have been made, the original concept of databases as a static repository of Level 0/1 content has evolved to support heterogeneous data, and as a necessary enabler of High-Level fusion processes. Relatively recent database technologies now support specialized storage for complex content such as multi-media, geospatial, and semantic data types. Additionally, database functionality has been extended from what was once almost exclusively storage and retrieval, to include integrated forensic and predictive algorithms, as well as decision support frameworks such as the data cube. These data mining capabilities provide a rich tool-set from which to tailor a fusion application. However, due to their inherent trade-off space, they present a significant design and integration challenge when implementing an enterprise architecture, which has to provide a comprehensive and cohesive framework across the entire fusion workflow, and which has to meet the needs of various Communities-of-Interest. This paper expounds on the role of data architecture as a key discipline to help analyze and synthesize an enterprise fusion system-of-systems, and presents selected principles to maximize heterogeneous data exploitation.

How to exchange information between parties in a mega-scale disaster management system is one of the fundamental challenges to support timely and efficient disaster response and relief. Specifically, the timeliness, scalability, and availability are three desirable features for information exchange. We call the framework to support information exchange with the three features an open information gateway, OIGY in short. In this paper, we present the challenges of information gateway, and the design of the communication protocols and the fundamental components and algorithms to support the aforementioned features. The efforts of this work will be divided into two major components: one is the distributed Truthful Real-time Information Publishing and Subscribing (TRIPS), and the other one is Heterogeneous And Plug-n-PlaY networks (HAPPY). The two components in OIGY collaborate to provide reliable and timely information publish and subscription service. TRIPS is responsible for logical information exchange management. Compared to modern real-time publish and subscription services, TRIPS is aimed at information responsiveness and distributed content-based filtering in an un-reliable network. To achieve better responsiveness, TRIPS will take advantage of the run-time service composition of SOA framework to select information sources. To enhance the success rate, TRIPS relies the information routing information provided by HAPPY. HAPPY will integrate heterogeneous communication networks including 3G/WiMAX telecommunication network and mesh mobile network into a coherent communication network and discovers the routes with probabilistic bandwidth guarantee.

Reducing power/energy consumption is an important goal for all computer systems, from servers to battery-driven hand-held devices. To achieve this goal, the energy consumption of all system components needs to be reduced. One of the most power-hungry components is the off-chip DRAM, even when it is idle. DRAMs support different power-saving modes, such as self-refresh and power-down, but employing them every time the DRAM is idle, reduces performance due to their power-up latencies. The self-refresh mode offers large power savings, but incurs a long power-up latency. The power-down mode, on the other hand, has a shorter power-up latency, but provides lower power savings. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a novel power-saving policy that combines the best of both power-saving modes in order to achieve significant power reductions with a marginal performance penalty. To accomplish this, we use a history-based predictor to forecast the duration of an idle period and then either employ self-refresh, or power-down, or a combination of both power saving modes. Significant refinements are made to the predictor to maximize the energy savings and minimize the performance penalty. The presented policy is evaluated using several applications from the multimedia domain and the experimental results show that it reduces the total DRAM energy consumption between 68.8% and 79.9% at a negligible performance penalty between 0.3% and 2.2%.

The mobile device has the lacked space for configuring cameras to make either ortho- or hyperstereoscopic condition with a small size of display. Therefore mobile stereoscopy cannot provide a presence with a good depth sense to an observer. To solve this problem, we focused on the depth sense control method with a switchable stereo camera alignment. In converging type, the fusible stereo area becomes wider compared to a parallel type when the same focal length was used in both types. This matter makes it that the stereo fusible area formed by converging type to be equal to the parallel type with a more shorten focal length. Therefore there is a kind of the zoom-out effect at the reconstructed depth sense. In diverging type, the fusible stereo area becomes narrower than the parallel. As the same way, the diverging type guarantees a similar characteristic of that an increased focal length is considered in parallel type. Therefore there is a zoom-in effect existing. Stereoscopic zoom-in depth effect becomes rapidly changed by the increased angle but zoom-out becomes retarded relatively.
