We demonstrate a multimodal, multi-user, and multi-device conference program guide for conference participants. Its functionality includes access to the conference program with additional multimedia content, voting, feedback, and communication with the other participants. People can interact with the system in a multimodal way using spoken language, gestures and haptic feedback with mobile phones and shared public displays. © 2011 Authors.

After the extensive effort dedicated by both Academia and Industry in the area of peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming by looking at models and network algorithms to achieve optimal load distribution, recent works are moving forward to enhance the overall P2P systems efficiency by focusing on specific video codecs and packetization techniques at application layer. The purpose to integrate different technologies with the aim to design full streaming solutions requires a joint efforts from the market and EU projects community. Many engineering issues have been brought out in terms of compatibility and integration that need to be addressed. In this paper we focused on a bottleneck discovered during the packetization step between the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) streaming module (during content creation) and the P2P engine before delivering the packets over the network. We compared the a priori fixed packet size solution adopted in P2P-Next project with a codec aware approach, gaining performance in terms of network overhead. We performed experiments with various sequences aiming at overall P2P streaming efficiency and measured the bandwidth cost under various conditions. Since we focused on the application layer, our statistics analysis can be helpful in designing P2P streaming solutions dealing with any network type.

In wireless mobile environments, large bandwidth and high quality of service (QoS) are recently required to support the increased demand for multimedia services. Long term evolution (LTE) is one of the promising solutions for the next generation broadband wireless access systems. In order to support high data rate with low latency, LTE simplifies network architecture and uses orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) for downlink transmission technology. Packet scheduling algorithm is one of the important features to support QoS in LTE system. In this paper, we propose delay-aware packet scheduling (DAPS) algorithm considering QoS requirements of delays for various traffic classes, channel conditions, and fairness. To reflect delay experience at scheduling instance, DAPS algorithm observes how queue waiting time of head-of-line (HOL) packet is closed to allowed maximum packet delay. As a result, DAPS increases the number of transmitted packets with satisfying the required delay. Comprehensive simulation results show that DAPS algorithm yields better delay performance compared with two existing PF and M-LWDF algorithms.

The proliferation of broadband wireless facilities, together with the demand for multimedia applications, are creating a wireless multimedia era. In this scenario, the key requirement is the delivery of multimedia content with Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support for thousands of users (and access networks) in broadband in the wireless systems of the next generation.. This paper sets out new QoE-aware packet controller mechanisms to keep video streaming applications at an acceptable level of quality in Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave access (WiMAX) networks. In periods of congestion, intelligent packet dropper mechanisms for IEEE 802.16 systems are triggered to drop packets in accordance with their impact on user perception, intra-frame dependence, Group of Pictures (GoP) and available wireless resources in service classes. The simulation results show that the proposed solutions reduce the impact of multimedia flows on the user's experience and optimize wireless network resources in periods of congestion.. The benefits of the proposed schemes were evaluted in a simulated WiMAX QoS/QoE environment, by using the following well-known QoE metrics: Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Video Quality Metric (VQM), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Mean Option Score (MOS). © 2011 ACM.

Medium access Control (MAC) scheduler entity forms one of the most important parts of any high speed packet access system like HSDPA or LTE. To the best of our knowledge the LTE MAC schedulers that had been proposed so far constitute of sub-carrier resource scheduling mostly based on single criteria like user throughput, link conditions, buffer constraints or power requirement. The above LTE MAC scheduler algorithms do not take care of user's queue weight calculation taking all the above mentioned parameters into consideration. In this paper, we proposed a novel algorithm to support dynamic queue weight calculation and referred it as Advanced-Opportunistic Proportionate Fairness Scheduler for LTE (A-OPFS-LTE). The A-OPFS-LTE, calculates the queue weight based on multiple parameters like flow control feedback, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) retransmission status, service class type, guaranteed bit rate, access terminal (AT's) channel condition, queue's buffer utilization and later assigns the physical resource block. A-OPFS-LTE was able to schedule 14 uncompressed VoIP calls or 5 streaming type video calls every 1 milli-second scheduling cycle with packet loss less than 2%. Compared with MAC scheduler [10, 11], A-OPFS-LTE scheduler supports 10% cell throughput improvement and 30% more users © 2011 IEEE.

multimedia players typically provide a random-access feature (also known as seek-to-time) for the user to be able to set the current playing position. While the same is expected of multimedia players on embedded devices, the memory and processing power constraints of the embedded devices pose several challenges in being able to provide an efficient and responsive user experience. This is a particularly significant challenge for large files (especially High-Definition HD video files), and when the multimedia file resides on a slow Input- Output (I/O) device (such as Secure Digital or SD card). In this paper, we propose an indexing mechanism based on a Multi-format Index Data Structure (MIDS). Many previous attempts to create indexing tables have been made but this, we believe, is the first systematic attempt to provide a multicontainer format and multi-entry format indexing. The proposed index data structure has a time complexity of O (1) for entry retrieval and O (1) for entry addition, with a space complexity of O (1). The use of the index data structure in container format demultiplexers results in a dramatic reduction of the seek-to-time operation - to about one-tenth (10%) or one-half (50%) of the original time, even with very small index table sizes (1 Kilo Bytes). The result is a more responsive user experience. The proposed index data structure can also be utilized in gaining efficiency through indexing multimedia files in multimedia content Servers (such as YouTube servers) and in indexing Flat File Data Bases. © 2011 IEEE.

P2P overlay potentially provides an efficient routing architecture that is self-organizing, massively scalable, and robust in a wide area. To improve the requesting nodes' QoS routing and to reduce the bandwidth and processing consumption of the nodes in a P2P system, three correlative requirements should be considered and satisfied: (1) to make system structure to be scalable;(2) to locate and route information at a low cost and efficiently without global view of the system;(3) to make the overlay robust in front of the dynamic topologies. However, not all P2P systems are compatible with multimedia streaming. Unstructured systems are designed more specifically than structured systems for the heterogeneous Internet environment, where the nodes' persistence and availability are not guaranteed. In this paper, three correlative standards for evaluating the compatibility of a P2P system with multimedia streaming are presented. A detailed measurement study of three popular unstructured P2P overlays and our overlay called MPO is performed. Our method is to analyze performances of classical searching algorithms in various overlays. Key factors in content locations including scalability, query success rate, query messages, cost, disturbed times and fault tolerance are considered carefully. The simulation results show some characteristics in unstructured P2P overlay and prove that MPO is a highly efficient, low cost and fault tolerant overlay and a good structure for applications in multimedia streaming.

As intelligent content management reduces the latency between IPTV video serving office and mobile device, it becomes feasible to introduce a limited form of negative acknowledgments. Scalable video lends itself to selective acknowledgment, as does selection by video picture type. The defining characteristic of mobile video transport schemes is the response to handover. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the scalable selective negative acknowledgment transport scheme proposed decreases throughput but can retain acceptable video quality during vertical handover from an outdoors WiMAX system and an indoors IEEE 802.11 system. © 2011 IEEE.

With the explosion of multimedia data, the traditional image retrieval method by text couldn't meet people's demand of more accurate retrieval results any longer. Therefore, the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been researched to achieve more accurate results. CBIR uses image visual features to represent image and perform retrieval. Color feature is applied most widely in image retrieval systems. In this paper, we choose several common CBIR algorithms based on color to analyze their robustness to the characteristics of images. We test 9 kinds of images for the algorithms. From the experiment performance, we evaluate the adaptability of the algorithms under different kinds of images. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Providing effective tools to navigate and access through long audio archives, or monitor and classify broadcast streams, proves to be an extremely challenging task. Main issues originate from the varied nature of patterns of interest in a composite audio environment, the massive size of such databases, and the capability of performing when prior knowledge on audio content is scarce or absent. This paper proposes a computational architecture aimed at discovering occurrences of repeating patterns in audio streams by means of unsupervised learning. The targeted repetitions (or motifs) are called signalling, by analogy with a biological nomenclature, as referring to a broad class of audio patterns (as jingles, songs, advertisements, etc...) frequently occurring in broadcast audio. We adapt a system originally developed for word discovery applications, and demonstrate its effectiveness in a song discovery scenario. The adaption consists in speeding up critical parts of the computations, mostly based on audio feature coarsening, to deal with the large occurrence period of repeating songs in radio streams. © 2011 IEEE.
