Foot-mounted inertial systems for indoor positioning and pedestrian guidance are an elegant and cheap solution to track first responders within buildings and underground structures. They can run completely autonomous, i.e. they do not require preinstalled infrastructure installations. But there are some difficult problems to solve: Starting from a known position the positioning error increases with the travelled distance, if only a double integration of the accelerations is performed. Therefore it is necessary to cut down the integration intervals and to reposition the system from time to time vis-a-vis a known landmark. Several algorithms have been developed at TU Graz to reduce these errors. The precise recognition of the motion patterns allows for performing zero velocity updates (ZUPT) to achieve a high accuracy in distance. Further improvements are gained by the fusion of additional sensors like barometer or GPS. Different map matching algorithms are used to perform periodic repositioning. Since ground floors often are not available, HSLU has developed a video content analysis based repositioning method that increases the accuracy of the heading of the IMU system considerably.

Recently, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have received enormous attention for wireless backbone network as well as sensor network due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness in deployment. Particularly, IEEE 802.16-2004 based on time division multiple access (TDMA) with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interface supports mesh mode operation for last-mile connection to backhaul networks by means of distributed control functionalities. For the distributed operation, network and scheduling information is conveyed via control channels under a channel access protocol, named mesh election (ME). Meanwhile, in order to provide high data rate multimedia services, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) has been widely accepted by many proponents in the standardization parties such as 3GPP and IEEE 802.16. In these respects, we propose efficient two-dimensional ME protocols for OFDMA-based WMNs. The proposed protocols simply work by separating its procedure into two steps, subframeand subchannel-Ievel elections, which satisfy collision-free criteria for broadcast transmission and reception. Also, we suggest summation and product metrics for subchannel-Ievel election, which have better performance in terms of transmission interval and resource utilization than that of independence metric by increasing the probability that a node succeeds in subframe-and subchannel-Ievel elections subsequently.

Social networked applications have been more and more popular, and have brought great challenges to the network engineering, particularly the huge demands of bandwidth and storage for social media. The recently emerged content clouds shed light on this dilemma. Towards the migration to clouds, partitioning the social contents has drawn significant interests from the literature. Yet the existing works focus on preserving the social relationship only, while an important factor, user access pattern, is largely overlooked. In this paper, by examining a large collection of YouTube video data, we first demonstrate that partitioning the network entirely based on social relationship would lead to unbalanced partitions in terms of access. We further analyze the role of social relationship in the social media applications, and conclude that user access pattern should be taken into account and social relationship should be dynamically preserved. We formulate the problem as a constrained k-medoids clustering problem, and propose a novel Weighted Partitioning Around Medoids (wPAM) solution. We present a dissimilarity/similarity metric to facilitate the preservation of the social relationship. We compare our solution with other state-of-the-art algorithms, and the preliminary results show that it significantly decreases the access deviation in each cloud server, and flexibly preserves the social relationship. © 2011 ACM.

In the last years the interest in methods and techniques for circumventing digital video broadcasting security is continuously increasing, and digital TV content providers are struggling to restrict usage only to authorized users through complex conditional access systems. Currently, the most significant weakness is the card-sharing activity which allows a subscriber to provide access to digital contents to a group of users connected through an IP network. This is usually realized employing ad hoc customized devices. Detecting the presence of these illegal systems on the network by recognizing their related traffic is an important issue of primary importance. To avoid the identification of such traffic are often used payload obfuscation strategies based on encryption, making it difficult the adoption of packet inspection techniques. This paper presents some ideas about a possible strategy for binary classification and detection of card-sharing traffic based on the natural capability of Wavelet Analysis to decompose a traffic time series into several component series associated with particular time and frequency scales and hence allowing its observation at different frequency component levels and with different resolutions. These ideas are a first step for the implementation of a classification scheme that relies only on time regularities of the traffic and not on the packet content that may be affected by protocol and payload obfuscation techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

The efficiency of BitTorrent in content distribution has inspired a number of peer-to-peer (P2P) protocols for on-demand video (VoD) streaming systems (henceforth BitTorrent-like VoD systems). However, the fundamental quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of VoD (i.e. providing peers with a smooth playback continuity and a short startup delay) make the design of these systems more challenging than normal file-sharing systems. In particular, the bandwidth allocation strategy is an important aspect in the design of BitTorrent-like VoD systems, which becomes even more crucial in a scenario where a large number of peers joins in a short period of time, a phenomenon known as flashcrowd. In fact, the new joining peers all demand for content while having few or no pieces of content to offer in return yet. An unwise allocation of the limited bandwidth actually available during this phase may cause peers to experience poor QoS. In this work, we analyze the effects of a flashcrowd on the scalability of a BitTorrent-like VoD system and propose a number of mechanisms to make the bandwidth allocation in this phase more effective. In particular, we derive an upper bound for the number of peers that can be admitted in the system over time and we find that there is a trade-off between having the seeders minimize the upload of pieces already injected recently and high peer QoS. Based on the insights gained from our analysis, we devise some flashcrowd-handling algorithms for the allocation of peer bandwidth to improve peer QoS during flashcrowd. We validate the effectiveness of our proposals by means of extensive simulations.

Priority Processing (PP) describes an efficient way to adapt the processing of software based video algorithms to the available resources of programmable platforms. Here, the processing order is determined based on the importance of the input picture content. Furthermore the processing can be interrupted at any time and the image can be send to output. In this way, real-time processing can be guaranteed. At the same time, the typically limited platform resources are properly targeted to achieve the best possible output quality. We clarify the principle on the example of an PP-deinterlacing algorithm. This paper presents the measured deinterlacing output quality dependent on available (limited) processing time. © 2011 IEEE.

Movies are one of the biggest sources of entertainment, in individual and social contexts. By combining diverse symbol systems, such as images, texts, music and narration to tell stories, they often engage the viewers perceptually, cognitively and emotionally. Advances in digitalization and networking are enabling the access to enormous collections of videos and movies over the Internet, in social media, and through video on demand services on iTV. The development of video content-based analysis and classification techniques is also allowing the access to more information about or contained in the movies, demanding for new ways to search, browse and view videos and movies in this scenario. In this paper, we present and evaluate MovieClouds, an interactive web application designed to access, explore and visualize movies based on the information conveyed in the different tracks or perspectives of its content, especially audio and subtitles where most of the semantics is expressed, and with a special focus on the emotional dimensions expressed in the movies or felt by the viewers. For the overview, analysis, and exploratory browsing of the movies collection and the individual movies, it adopts a tag cloud unifying-paradigm, that gained popularity in Web 2.0, with the aim to extend to movies the power, flexibility, engagement and fun usually associated with clouds. © 2011 ACM.

Mashups that combine already existing data into an integrated experience are becoming increasingly popular. So far most mashups have been built around maps and images. However, as the web is growing increasingly ubiquitous media, also multimedia content - sound, video and even small programs - is becoming a candidate for mashup creation, with potentially superior user experience. Currently available methods to implement mashups do not allow effortless access to personal data across domains or provide means to ensure that the user experience is coherent. This paper describes our mobile mashup ecosystem aimed to solve these problems and work as a ubiquitous platform for mobile multimedia mashups. Furthermore, we provide a brief literature review about existing mashup frameworks and end-user programming. In addition, to constitute a basis for future work, we discuss about challenges expected to emerge when the ecosystem is implemented. © 2011 IEEE.
